Fixing an old squeaky fan

avatar

This air circulator is probably a few decades old. It was a hand me down from an old job. It would be used if the server rooms cooling failed. And since they got some new redundant systems they no longer needed it. So I got a nice fan that helps keep one of my rooms air moving. I also use it to dry my mason bee cocoons.

But in the last year its starting making a squeaking and squealing sound when running after awhile. I figured the oiling of the bearing has all dried up. So I take the fan apart, clean it. And try to apply some dry lube (lithium grease). Upon applying it I noticed it does not penetrate very well, so I found myself still with a squeaky fan after putting it all back together.

So I took it all apart again but this time used some gun lube. Kroil oil to be more exact, this stuff will penetrate the bearings and work down inside further than the dry lube that instantly dried upon contact with the metals. It felt kind of funny using my gun lube on a fan, but its the best stuff I had and figured it could not hurt to try it.

The smell of applying it reminded me of the days after going out to shoot my guns and cleaning the gun powder build up. The Kroil oil has a special smell to it. I applied it to the shaft and let it drip down into the housing where the bearing should be. Since I did not want to take apart the motor housing I dribbled it on top and once enough was on the shaft it would trickle down into the housing.

I left it for the oil to work its magic for a few hours and then ran the fan, success! No more squeaky fan sounds, and seems the bearing is now happy with some newly added oil. And makes my room smell like 100 guns were just freshly cleaned.. haha! I kinda like the smell.

Since making this video, its been running for a month or so and its working great! No need to replace the fan and glad I could service it. I wonder how long it will last. The fan seems like its high quality and I think it will stick around for along time as long as I take good care of it. The only other repair I had to do to the fan was hot glueing the speed selector knob as it stripped and I was forced to use a screwdriver to adjust it. But thats all fixed with some hot snot and I am happy with a fully functional fan again.

I kinda wish I could fix things. Always wondering how people learn that. Do they learn it fron their father or they just google it? Parents somehow never teach girls how to get things done..

The first time I tried to fix it I failed, so I learned from my mistakes and tried a different method.

I watch alot of how to videos online so it helps alot.
