Six Feet Under: the best finale ever

Have you ever wondered which series finale is considered the most beautiful series ever? Every ranking is subjective, that's clear, but when a finale is almost unanimously recognized as the best of all time then maybe it's fair to think it really is. I'm sure many people are thinking about Breaking Bad's memorable "Felina", others to the final catpardesco of "The Wire", others to the wonderful ending of "The Americans". You're all wrong. The most beautiful ending in TV history is that of "Six Feet Under", the always overrated HBO series. It aired from 2001 to 2005 for 5 seasons, and ended on August 21, 2005, moving every single viewer to the notes of Sia's "Breathe Me". Writing a final series doesn't have to be easy. Not only are you called to close all the storylines, trying not to leave anything unfinished, but you are also called to leave a kind of will for posterity. If the pilot draws a manifesto of intent, the finale tells us what that series wanted to tell, the identity of the series itself and the message that it wanted to convey in all the years of stay on the screens. Alan Ball's series succeeded. She managed to convey something to us, to condense in the last episode everything that she had always tried to be. And he did it with the usual class, the usual black humour and with 7 minutes of delicate essence that alone are worth the price of the ticket. Anyone who's got to fall in love with the series about the Fischer family will have reviewed "Everyone's waiting" dozens of times, or at least reviewed dozens of times those final 7 minutes. Rest assured that with every vision you will be moved, you will cry. You'll end up looking in the mirror and asking yourself, "Why did I get moved?" The answer is because Six Feet Under has managed to answer probably the most difficult question of all: what is life. He did it without frills, slamming life in your face in all its uniqueness and ruthless finiteness. For 5 seasons he accompanied us, from funeral to funeral, to the discovery of the complexity of the human being as an individual and of humanity as a union of several individuals in search of a common purpose, affection, love, joy. An impossible but very simple purpose as we were reminded in the finale of the fourth season. We are so lost in seeking balance in things that are very complicated and out of our control that we forget to love the simplicity of love and the relationships that define us. Hatred for the different, resentment towards our neighbours, non-acceptance of ourselves, the dark passenger within us, arrogance, pride, envy that consume us are hallmarks of the human being that often risk making the good disappear that it's in us. Six Feet Under uses a family of undertakers as a manifesto of all this. Men and women who are used to death that they forget about life. But life is one, one and in itself has an indestructible expiration date. We don't know her, but we know she's coming sooner or later. We are so presumptuous that we think it will never come, but unfortunately death will strike us all, without distinction. The greatness of the finale of Six Feet Under is all there. We're all doomed to die. Surrounded by the affection of our loved ones or alone like small stones consumed in the desert. Happy or disconsolate. Suddenly on any given day or devoured by a disease. Young and in full strength or old and without more energy. Our eyes will close. We're going to leave all or nothing depending on who we've been alive. Only memories and people who can remember us will remain. We will disappear. So why not try to live before this is over? After all, everyone waits, only death and time are not so patient as to wait for us to come to terms with our weaknesses, our fears and our anxieties.

Ogni classifica è soggettiva, questo è chiaro, ma quando un finale è quasi unanimemente riconosciuto come migliore di tutti i tempi allora forse è giusto pensare che lo sia per davvero. Sono sicuro che in molti stiano pensando al memorabile "Felina" di Breaking Bad, altri al gattopardesco finale di "The Wire", altri ancora allo stupendo finale di "The Americans". Vi sbagliate tutti. Il finale più bello della storia della tv è quello di "Six Feet Under", la sempre troppo sottovalutata serie di HBO. Andata in Onda dal 2001 al 2005 per 5 stagioni essa si concluse, il 21 agosto 2005, commuovendo ogni singolo spettatore sulle note di "Breathe me" di Sia. Scrivere un series finale non deve essere facile. Non solo si è chiamati a chiudere tutte le storyline, cercando di non lasciare nulla in sospeso, ma si è chiamati anche a lasciare una sorta di testamento per i posteri. Se il pilot traccia un manifesto di intenti, il finale ci dice cosa quella serie ha voluto raccontare, l'identità della serie stessa ed il messaggio che essa ha voluto trasmettere in tutti gli anni di permanenza sugli schermi. La serie di Alan Ball ci è riuscita. E' riuscita a trasmetterci qualcosa, a condensare nell'ultima puntata tutto quello che essa aveva sempre cercato di essere. E lo ha fatto con la solita classe, il solito humour nero e con 7 minuti di delicata essenza che da soli valgono il prezzo del biglietto. Chi ha avuto modo di innamorarsi della serie sulla famiglia Fischer, avrà rivisto decine di volte "Everyone's waiting" o perlomeno avrà rivisto decine di volte quei 7 minuti finali. State certi che ad ogni visione vi commuoverete, piangerete. Finirete per guardarvi allo specchio e chiedervi: "perché mi sono commosso?". La risposta è perché Six Feet Under è riuscita a rispondere probabilmente alla domanda più difficile di tutti: cos'è la vita. Lo ha fatto senza fronzoli, sbattendovi in faccia la vita in tutta la sua unicità e spietata finitezza. Per 5 stagioni ci ha accompagnati, di funerale in funerale, alla scoperta della complessità dell'essere umano come individuo e dell'umanità come unione di più individui in cerca di uno scopo comune, di affetto, di amore, di gioia. Uno scopo impossibile eppure semplicissimo come ci avevano ricordato nel finale della quarta stagione. Siamo cosi persi a cercare un equilibrio in cose complicatissime e fuori dal nostro controllo che ci dimentichiamo di amare la semplicità dell'amore e dei rapporti che ci definiscono. L'odio per il diverso, il rancore verso il prossimo, la non accettazione di noi stessi, il passeggero oscuro dentro di noi, l'arroganza, la superbia, l'invidia che ci consumano sono tratti distintivi dell'essere umano che spesso rischiano di far scomparire il buono che c'è in noi. Six Feet Under utilizza una famiglia di becchini come manifesto di tutto questo. Uomini e donne abituati, cosi abituati alla morte da dimenticarsi della vita. Ma la vita è una, una soltanto e insita in se stessa ha una data di scadenza indistruttibile. Non la conosciamo ma sappiamo che prima o poi arriverà. Siamo cosi presuntuosi da pensare che non arriverà mai ma purtroppo la morte ci colpirà tutti, senza distinzione. La grandezza del finale di Six Feet Under è tutta li. Siamo tutti destinati a morire. Circondati dall'affetto dei nostri cari o soli come piccole pietre consumate nel deserto. Felici o sconsolati. Improvvisamente in un giorno qualunque o divorati da una malattia. Giovani e nel pieno delle forze o vecchi e senza più energie. I nostri occhi si chiuderanno. Lasceremo tutto o niente a seconda di chi siamo stati in vita. Resteranno solo i ricordi e persone che potranno ricordarsi di noi. Noi scompariremo. E allora perché non provare a vivere prima che tutto ciò finisca? In fondo tutti aspettano, solo la morte e il tempo non sono cosi pazienti da aspettare noi che scendiamo a patti con le nostre debolezze, le nostre paure e le nostre ansie.
