Freewrite, 27 Apr 2020: Sustainability and Enhancing the Hive Blockchain

avatar
(Edited)

Reflecting this morning on the recent price of HIVE, my thoughts turned to "sustainability" and what we might do to enhance the value of our blockchain, both short and long term.

Source: @justineh's post on "What do we want from content?"
Tech note: To minimize server costs, URL captured via HiveBlocks "view" of this post.

I am writing as we appear to be entering the now familiar "dump" phase of the "classic pump and dump" cycles common to the crypto asset class. By most accounts, linked to the recent Huobi announcement promoting its addition of HIVE ...

In thinking about how / whether we can "escape" from these cycles of speculation, I came across the post of @justineh referenced above. Since my comment on her post was becoming a post, I decided to "shift gears" and actually write one! Since I am "overdue" ... 😉

So, as succinctly as I can manage, here are my thoughts ...

Reward "Good" and Punish "Bad"

The fundamental challenge, in this "social experiment," is to understand human nature.

  • Reward "good" behavior - get more of it.
  • Punish "bad" behavior - get less of it.

Based upon the immutable "law" of "sowing and reaping." Full stop. Period. The "health" of this "social experiment" can be directly linked to how clearly this is understood. Followed by how effectively solutions to address these points are "delivered" ...

Satisfactory "Rewards" and "Punishments"

It is easy to write the words "good" and "bad."

  • How easy is it to define them, in a universally acceptable manner?
  • How well do these definitions then serve (as a former Business Systems Analyst) in providing the essential "requirements" programmers need to bring it all "to life?"

Stated in more hive-specific, experience-based language, how well does the Hive "echo chamber" (using @justineh's phrase) do in defining "good" and "bad?" And, from there, how are we doing with writing "quality" code that provides satisfactory "rewards" and "punishments" which are foundational to what we all experience on our "journey?"

Programmatic "Winners" and "Losers"

Whatever the answers are to the above, if they can be "wired" by someone programmatically:

  • Is it okay to gain an advantage over others, who do not have that skill set?
  • In whatever form this "advantage" takes, does it:
    1. Promote an intentional "feature" of the last hard fork?
    2. Exploit an unintended "weakness" of the last hard fork?
  • Should this "advantage," of being able to create "quality" content of a whole different sort, be restricted to some type of an "approved" list of coders that we vote on, e.g. the SPS proposals?

Whatever we may think of this issue, surprise, surprise, we already have a lot of this going on!? That is, these questions have already been "answered," whether we like it or not.

  • Is this "good?"
  • Is this "bad?"
  • What "power" do the current practitioners hold over us in openly answering these questions?

Addressing "Plagiarism"

In whatever manner we answer the "quality" content question, we are then faced with determining the source of it, in a desire to properly reward its creator. Under the generally accepted label of "plagiarism," how well do we do with addressing this?

  • Black and white: Does simply universally condemning "copy and paste" of someone else's efforts cover this issue?
  • Shades of gray: If our thoughts "spring" from the "seeds" of the work of others, how do we properly define that?
  • Our responses: The "rewards" and "punishments" questions raised above are typically narrowly focused on how much we "earn." In a similar manner and a parallel train of thought, how important is addressing the issue of plagiarism?

In support and as an example of these points, as clearly stated above, I am writing this post in response to answering the questions posed by @justineh in her post. I've provided links to it. I have used her post image. Questions which might then be asked:

  • Is simply referencing her work enough?
  • Is some portion, of whatever reward is generated from my post, rightfully hers?
  • If so, how is that determined and, then, by what mechanism is that reward delivered?

Note: In my own way of acknowledging this as an "issue," I have chosen to make @justineh a 10% beneficiary of this post.

Closing

At its core, at its "essence," the Hive blockchain is software. Which provides a "platform" on which we "engage" with others all over the world. In a "social experiment," on a global network ... Getting the associated issues addressed and the "balance" right, between us "analog" humans and the "digital" nature of this "ecosystem," is not trivial.

How well any of us understand the issues addressed in this post is an open question, but we are all "living" with the results of the 23 (HF 23 on March 20th) passes made at delivering "answers" so far. And they have a direct bearing on how profitable the continued investment of our time and talents into it have been up until now.

Going forward into what we all hope will be a brighter future, continued effort and focus on creating satisfactory solutions to these issues is imperative. If we are to have a sustainable upward slope to the charting of HIVE prices, that we've all enjoyed so much over the last few days.

I’d love to hear any feedback you may be inspired to provide.

Until "next time," all the best to you for a better tomorrow, as we all work together to build up our Hive Communities and add increasing value to our Hive blockchain! 👍 😊

Respectfully,
Hivian @roleerob

Everybody has a story as to why they are entitled to their rewards, while at the same time perpetuating the echo chamber. It was the same way on steem. Lots of problem enumerators, and not a lot of solution creators. And yes in some cases it comes down to voting valuable blogs up, and less valuable blogs down. I'm talking about the value of the blog at an atomic level, and not some perceived value attached to it by the perceived value of the creator. More weight needs to be applied to content that is considered valuable to the general public, and I hope that @trendthis helps in that regard.

Yes @joshman ...

"... while at the same time perpetuating the echo chamber. It was the same way on steem. Lots of problem enumerators, and not a lot of solution creators."

... I agree with this. From your perspective, how do you see the gap between "problem enumerators" and the "solution creators?"

From mine, which I have tried to highlight a bit here, a significant aspect of it is the gap between programmers of any software and that "apps" user base. A gap that led to the creation of the whole field of Business Analysis. Getting "problem statements" properly rewritten into a "requirements list" is an important part of that job description.

Lots of different ways this concept gets communicated, but I think it is an essential part of moving forward.

As always, thank you for your input and adding value to this post.

To reward 'good' a start would be to get rid of all outside factors that sway an individuals perspective on what is good. You simply vote on what YOU think is good - based on YOUR reading / viewing pleasure, no other reason.

Yes @michealb ...

"You simply vote on what YOU think is good - based on YOUR reading / viewing pleasure ..."

... I agree with that! How often do you think that happens "in here?" We will all, of course, depending on our different experiences, likely have different answers.

A good question is whether the "behavior modifications" resulting from the EIP changes in HF21 / HF22 moved us closer to you're suggesting? For me, based on what I've observed, they leave a lot to be desired ...

The big picture challenge is how well anyone can "map out" what should happen (is it possible to reach consensus the goal is what your statement suggests? And, if so, the mechanism to achieve it?) and, then, write code which "brings it to life" ...

lol i fail, getting better though. I'm constantly swayed by ROI / not letting VM sit at 100% etc etc. Yep a better code where i don't have to compete with my own conflicting interests.

Yes, my friend, well at least you are honest @michealb. As I sure you are well aware, you are in good company ... 🙂

I agree 100% ...

"... better code where i don't have to compete with my own conflicting interests."

... as, however poorly I am communicating it, that is a fundamental problem, if not the fundamental problem. Whatever behavior the "system" rewards is what the vast majority of people are going to do. If that, in turn, is in conflict with what is "good," then is there any more serious problem to address?

A "turning point" for me was an exchange (I was shocked that I even got a reply, as normally they can't be bothered ...) with a well-known whale last year. Who was willing to admit openly that his initial efforts to "do the right thing" were not only not "rewarded," they were penalized. And eventually, he just "joined in with the herd" and maximized his ROI, which was enormous ...

Dear @roleerob, why was Hive born? In Korea, blockchain and cryptocurrency are recognized as simple speculative products.

As I read your article, I thought that the purpose of blockchain and cryptocurrency is a meeting place for people who insist on centralization and decentralization.

I am not sure what political and economic objectives and values the information posted on Hive produces.

PS: Senior, Senior, when I increase the hive power, I can comment, but I can't post. I don't know why posting is not possible.
I'm ashamed, but I still don't know how to use the Hive blockchain. hahaha

This question @silvergrifin007 is confusing to me ...

"Dear @roleerob, why was Hive born?"

... as it seems I have read comments you have written yourself about all that took place after Justin Sun bought out SteemIt. Perhaps I am remembering wrong ...

At its most basic, both Steem originally and Hive now are platforms for creating content and earning money for your efforts. How well that works is the point of this post and many, many others.

On this ...

"... but I can't post. I don't know why posting is not possible."

... is this recent? When you first mentioned this weeks ago, I delegated to you to eliminate this being a problem.

Are you familiar with this view of your account - https://hiveblocks.com/@silvergrifin007 - as it tells you exactly where you are on your resource credits?

Here is what it is currently showing:

Senior @roleerob, I can't post after increasing hive power. However, comments are possible.
After converting all hive to hive power, posting fails. I still don't know how to use the Hive blockchain.

I'm not good at English, so you understand.
I still don't know the concept and usage of blockchain and cryptocurrency.
I don't even know the difference between Steam and Hive.

How long has this been a problem @silvergrifin007? You were posting okay. Do you know anything that changed?

Are you able to post on Steem?

I want to help you, but in this case I don't understand why you are having trouble.

Dear @roleerob, sorry I kept asking you questions.
After converting hive to hive power 6 days ago, I can't post to hive. However, posting on Steem works well.

No need to apologize @silvergrifin007. You are just answering my questions. And I am trying to help you.

Looking at your Steem account, you have less RC (Resource Credits) there than you have on Hive, with the delegation I have given to you. And the underlying code is the same ...

You should be able to post. What UI (User Interface) are you using? I'll come back to asking what has changed? Perhaps a change you made in a setting somewhere? I do not know of any which would make it so you cannot post though ...

I wish I could help you, but I have no idea what the source of the problem is you are experiencing.

The UI (User Interface) doesn't know what I'm using. I log in to Hive with Google Chrome.
Since I converted Hive to Hive Power 6 days ago,
I couldn't post to Hive.
I had a problem after converting Hive to Hive Power.

Yes, okay @silvergrifin007, I am almost certain your problem has nothing to do with powering up Hive to Hive Power. That is what you are supposed to do to increase your RC (Resource Credits).

Here are your 2 UI options:

PeakD: https://peakd.com/@silvergrifin007
Hive.Blog: https://hive.blog/@silvergrifin007

My question was whether you had changed any settings in your UI, but I don't know whether that matters. I have never heard of changing a setting which leads to no longer being able to post ...

I wish I could help, but I really don't know what could be causing your inability to post.

@roleerob,
I use UI PeakD: https://peakd.com/@silvergrifin007 and it solves my problem. However, i can log in after entering the posting key. Was it a UI problem? Should I use the UI as PeakD: https://peakd.com/@silvergrifin007 in the future?

Thank you very much for your help.

Excellent! Glad to hear that helped @silvergrifin007. Were you using Hive.Blog before?

Yes, I would continue to use PeakD from now on. It is a much better UI. The best ...

Further, I would recommend you install this - Hive KeyChain. This is a Chrome Extension, which was created by Top Witness - @yabamatt and his team of developers.

Once you install Hive Keychain, then you enter your keys and protect them by creating a password. It takes a little bit to set-up properly, but is very simple afterwards. The best way to go, in my opinion.

The combination of PeakD, as the UI, and Hive Keychain, to supply all of the different permissions needed, is what I use myself.

Were you using Hive.Blog before?

Senior @roleerob , I kept using Hive.Blog because I'm not good at English.

Further, I would recommend you install this - Hive KeyChain. This is a Chrome Extension, which was created by Top Witness - @yabamatt and his team of developers.

Although I am not good at English, I will accept your advice.
It is difficult for me to adapt to the new hive environment.

Is the Rocky Mountains a dawn? Korea is at 2 AM.
Thanks for your kind advice. Good night.

I really like how you've done that with the different colors! 👍

I've always appreciated the routine reminders you send of the progress I am making on my "journey." I am currently working on my 2nd Anniversary post, which is coming up in May.

I loved the image I got in HiveBuzz commemorating the occasion!

P.S. I celebrate, as my anniversary, when I started actively engaging (May 2018) versus when I first invested in STEEM (Aug 2017).
