A Gold Oil Paint Effect of the word Hive

Requirements

You don't need much materials to create the design above, no plugins required. All you need are;

  • GIMP application. Download GIMP, by clicking here
  • Gold foil texture, which I will give you below
  • Your time (smiles).

Let's Get Started

I suppose you already have GIMP on your device by now, then go on and open it. You will need the gold foil texture right about now, so you can search for it on the internet or you can simply download it below

Free Gold Foil Texture

  • Open the gold foil texture on gimp.

  • Create a new layer and then fill it with black. On default, our foreground color is black, so just fill it with the defaulted foreground color.

  • Next we will have to add some texts. Since our foreground is black and our background is white, we should switch it up, so that we can have a white text in a black background. Then add your text, for me, I added "Hive". You should then increase the font to around 500px - 550px, depending on what you want. For this article, I used 550ox.

  • Now you would have about 3 layers on your GIMP. Click the layer where you wrote your text, for me, it is Hive layer. Then click Alpha to selection. After you must have done that, then delete the layer. You will see this

  • Now, you have your text but it's black. To make it gold, click on layer, which shows, 'layer' and then click delete on your keyboard. Then click Select(which is located at the top right corner of GIMP), and click on 'none'. You will see this

  • We have got our gold, but we need to bring out the gold color. Click on Color(which is located at the same region of Select), and then click on 'level' and then adjust the input, to meet your need. You will see this. Now compare between the two images, you will notice the difference

  • I don't like the pure black background and will love to change it dark ash. You can change yours to what ever color you want. Now, click on the layer, which shows 'Layer' and then click on Alpha to selection. After that, delete the layer. You will see this.

  • Now, you would only have one layer, which would be your Gold Foil Texture layer. Click on it and then click on 'Add Alpha Channel'. After you have done that, just press delete on your keyboard. Then click Select(which is located at the top right corner of GIMP), and click on 'none'. You will see this.

  • You have a transparent gold text now. All you have to do is to change the background to the color of your choice. Create a new layer and then fill it with color of your choice. Mine is dark ash. After you must have gotten your color you wanted, you notice that your text is hidden. Click and drag your new layer below 'Gold Foil Texture's layer. You will see this

Annotation 20200517 165950.png

  • We are almost there. If you notice, the text doesn't yet have that oil paint effect yet. To give that oil paint effect you have to follow these steps. First, you click on the 'Gold Foil Texture's layer and then duplicate it. After that, you click on Color, and then 'Saturation'. You should reduce your saturation to zero, which will then make the text look like Black and White.

  • Now you have to manipulate the colors. Click on Color again, then click on 'Curves'. Now you manipulate them. You can see the arrows to show you how much I manipulated mine.

  • We haven't yet created that oil paint effect yet. Click on filters and then click on 'blur' and then click on 'Gaussian Blur' and then make it a 1.00 blur. After that, click on filters again, click on 'Distorts' and then click on 'Emboss', leave it at its default setting and then click on 'Ok'.

  • Now, you have created the oil paint effect but we don't have the gold color. Click on 'Mode' and then click on 'Soft Light' and boom you got it.
