Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una anécdota que pudo haber terminado muy mal debido a un acto de imprudencia subiendo El Ávila, una montaña muy conocida que hay en mi ciudad. Aprovechando que hoy es domingo, el día en el que es más común visitar este tipo de lugares. Espero ayudar a muchas personas con este post, porque no estoy exagerando, el peligro es real.

Today I want to share with you an anecdote that could have ended very badly due to a reckless act climbing El Ávila, a very known mountain in my city. I will take advantage of the fact that today is sunday, the day in which is more usual visiting these kind of places. I hope to help many people with this post, because I am not exaggerating, the danger is real.

Hace un tiempo me gustaba subir seguido a este lugar porque me gustaba mantenerme saludable con el ejercicio, y más si tenía contacto con la naturaleza, así que todo comenzó como un día normal de excursión, en el que un grupo de amigos y yo llegamos a Sabasnieves (la primera parada) y luego bajamos a unas quebradas que quedan cerca para bañarnos ahí un rato.

Some time ago I used to climb that place very often because I liked to keep myself healthy getting exercise, and even more if had contact with nature doing that, so everything started a climb normal climbing day, in which a group of friends and I arrived to Sabasnieves (the first step) and then we were down to some streams that were close to bathe there for a while.

Para llegar desde Sabasnieves hasta las quebradas hay que comenzar a bajar por un camino que ya luce como un bosque, ya el suelo no tiene tierra sino muchísimas hojas resbalosas y raíces de árboles, y la bajada es sumamente empinada, de hecho, hay algunos momentos en los que hay que bajar agachado para sostenerse de las raíces en el suelo y no caer, porque la caída sería mortal ya que el camino es angosto y al lado hay un precipicio lleno de árboles gigantes con ramas muy puntiagudas, y ni siquiera se ve el fondo, así que hay que bajar con muchísimo cuidado uno detrás del otro.

To get from Sabasnieves to the streams you have to start going down through a path that seems already like a forest, the floor did not have soil but slippery leaves and roots of trees, and the descent was extremely steep, actually there are some moments in which you have to go down crouched down to hold the roots on the floor and do not fall down, because the fall would be deadly, since the path is narrow and next to this there is a cliff full of high trees with pointed branches, and you can not even see the end, so you have to go down carefully, one after another.

Lo feo comienza cuando un compañero que suele ir a ese tipo de excursiones (pero para nada es un experto) empezó a bromear con que "esa bajada no era nada" y aseguraba entre risas que "él podía bajar corriendo", lo que a mí no me dio risa en lo absoluto, pero súbitamente sentí que me alzó sin mi consentimiento y empezó a bajar conmigo en sus brazos CORRIENDO, mientras que yo solo gritaba: "chamo, suéltame, yo no estoy jugando, en serio, SUÉLTAME". Recuerdo perfectamente el sonido de sus pasos pisando las hojas resbalosas del suelo, yo tenía los ojos cerrados y no podía creer que por culpa de un irresponsable me iba a morir o iba a terminar fracturada, parapléjica, qué se yo, solo me imaginaba lo peor.

The worst part starts here, when a buddy who uses to go to that kind of excursions (but he is not definitely an expert) started kidding saying things like: "that descent is nothing for me", and he swore that "he could go down by running", which did not make me laugh, but suddenly I felt that he carried me without my consent and started RUNNING down with me on his arms while I was just screaming: "man, let me go! I am not kidding, really LET ME GOT!". I remember exactly the sound of his steps treading the slippery leaves on the floor, I had my eyes closed and I could not believe that I would die because of an irresponsible, or I was going to end up fractured or paraplegic, who knows, I was just imagining the worst.

El camino era así, y nosotros nos caímos hacia la derecha.
The path was like this, and we fell down to the right.

Y pasó lo que tanto temía; él se tropezó y empezamos a rodar rumbo al precipicio. Rodamos alrededor de 15 segundos (los 15 segundos más largos de mi vida) por una zona completamente boscosa que está a unos 5 metros del precipicio, una zona en la que ya no hay camino para los humanos. Chocamos con muchas ramas y piedras y lo que nos detuvo de no seguir rodando hasta el precipicio fueron unos bambú. Gracias a esas plantas que eran fuertes y altas nos detuvimos a medio metro del precipicio.

And what I feared so much happened; he stumbled and we started rolling down heading to the cliff. We rolled down for about 15 seconds (the longest 15 seconds of my life) for a completely wooded area which is 5 meters from the cliff, an area in which there is no path for humans. We collided with many branches and stones, and what stopped us were some bamboo. Thanks to those plants which were strong and tall we stopped rolling down less than one meter before the cliff.

Nuestros amigos trataron de hacerse camino cuidadosamente entre los árboles para ver cómo estábamos. Yo estaba super adolorida y molesta, por supuesto. Solo sangramos, mi amigo sangró mucho más que yo, yo sangré poco, pero me quedaron unos moretones que dolían mucho y tardaron meses en quitarse. Afortunadamente no nos pasó nada en nuestros brazos, manos y dedos, porque ambos somos violinistas.

Our friends tried to make a path carefully in the middle of the trees to check if we were okay. My whole body hurt and I was angry, of course. We just bled, my friend bled more that me, I bled little, but I got some painful bruises which took a long to disappear. Fortunately we did not got any damage in our arms, hands and fingers, because we are both violinists.

Después de todo llegamos a una quebrada, nos lavamos las heridas y comimos. Terminamos pasándola bien a pesar de todo, pero no puedo negar que escribí esto temblando, porque sé que pudo haber terminado muy mal, hay partes del camino que están justo al lado del precipicio, si hubiésemos estado en una de esas ni siquiera hubiésemos rodado, agradezco enormemente que justo en donde caímos estaba ese espacio inclinado por el que rodamos, y agradezco a las plantas de bambú, porque si no ni siquiera ese espacio de 5 metros nos hubiese salvado.

After all of that we arrived to a stream, we washed our wounds and ate. We ended up having a good time despite everything, but I can not lie, I am writing this while I shiver inside, because I know it could be have been ended up very bad, there are parts of the path which are just beside of the cliff, if we have been in one of those parts we would not even have roll, I appreciate a lot that just in the place in which we fell was that inclined space in which we rolled down, and I am thankful with the bamboo plants, because if not, not even that 5 meters space would save us.
