The Walking dead in the pandemic and in hurricanes

The longer this pandemic is flying over the world, the more I think about how 'The Walking Dead' is such a realistic thing. Yes, ofcourse we all aint no Rick Grimes, but we are doing our best to make society work in the best of our power, even though the world is weird at the moment.

The latest option on the table in the Netherlands, a curfew. For some the end of the world, for other nothing so much special. I am noticing it depends on how the living situation is, is how most people react to this. As in...I can imagine if you live alone that you are not too fond of a curfew, while if you are living with more people in a house, it doesn't bother you that much.

One of the thing that people are referring to is that the Netherlands should not go back on a curfew because that would remind them too much of the 'German' years in 1940-1945. Now you can call me a mathematician or not but that means that the people who were living in that era are 75 years old and older AND most of them were even too young to remember this. I'm sorry, but isn't a bit of an argument that doesn't really stand against the status of the situation?

No one likes a curfew. My most recent curfew was after the Cat5 hurricane Irman in the Caribbean which lead me with my hospital badge driving around and taking care of people family, stuff and errands until I ran out of gas.

This time actually looked a bit like the series of 'The Walking Dead.' People were scavenging for food and other stuff which was a lot less useful, and I was on the road for a washing machine.

'A washing machine?

Yes a washing machnine. I was with people who had experienced hurricanes before and what they knew is that it is extremely important to keep yourself hygienic when it is difficult in other forms. Better said, even though if yuo have to sleep outside, when you put on some clean clothes again, that will make you feel a lot better.

So this washing machine was 'semi-automatic' as we could call it and is works fantistic without having any electricity but with hand washing. And there we went. The lady and I, the IT guy of a bank, and another lady. So what I didn't realize is that the region where the washing machine lady was living in, was not the best one. It was a poor region where a lot of the houses were built from wood and zink roofs.

When arriving there I was just shocked. It looked like a bomb had fell on the hill. Literally everything was flat, and no house was standing anymore. We walked towards where her house had been and I got tears in my eyes of the surreal view. And there it was. Her washing machine was standing firm and proud amongst all of the debris, as if it was ready for a pick up. We took it and with goosbumbs all over we left the area. The lady took some clothes from her she found scattered over and that was it.

One of the next stops was with the bank dude who needed to pick up something from his home to secure the vault from the bank which was also of how it sounds in the moving. Passing by his house his concrete roof was 20 meters separated from his house. He just climbed into his house through a busted window, got his stuff and we were off again.

I remember coming back, throwing myself on the wet matrass that was salty because of the lack of windows and filled with sea air trying to process all these images with tears in me eyes. All of this was in my first and only curfew.

So if you ask me about curfews and opinions on that? Well, if you compare it to my last curfew, I guess we don't really have much to complain about right? With electricity, food, and the next episode of 'The Walking Dead', a roof over your head and your washing machine ready to work for you.

I would say bring on the curfew. The faster we get this shit behind us.

Disclaimer: This is not about me beging pro or against vaccines or curfews. It is just about putting things in perspective giving my own twist to it. Do be offended, we have enough stuff to worry about already
