Staffordshire in Central England became one of the places that had a mysterious and tend to be scary appeal. In that place there is an old oak tree with branches that are shackled in a heavy iron chain (Chained Oak). Reportedly the tree is related to the frightening local legend.

The story of Chained Oak near Alton Village is the most famous legend in Staffordshire. It is said that one day in the 1830s, when the Earl of Shrewsbury returned to his home in the Alton Towers housing estate, a beggar woman stopped the train in the middle of the road and asked if she could ask for one or two coins.

The nobleman cruelly kicked him out and urged the driver to continue on his way. According to the story, the woman allegedly cursed her by losing her family members every time a branch fell from a majestic oak tree by the side of the road. That same night, a thunderstorm appeared and one of the branches of an oak tree fell to the ground.

As the woman said, a member of the royal family died in mysterious circumstances. The noble family who were afraid finally racked their brains to find a way to avoid the curse. The next morning, he ordered his servants to tie a metal chain around an oak tree branch so it wouldn't fall back.

There are various stories about this legend. According to another story, the beggar who curses is a man and not a woman. While other beliefs claim that Earl took the tree branch to his house to conduct an experiment to break the curse. But all the main plots are always the same.

"I believe it's all true, because when I visited him this year, you could tell just by looking at the chain that they were almost two hundred years old. Also, when you climbed Hex. You might notice in the queue inside, they reveal 40-second video clips taken back in the early 19th century, to prove that the earl actually made the chain, "said someone who commented on the tree

In line with netizens' previous comments, another netizen claimed that when he saw the tree last time, he felt a strange, dark, unfriendly presence around the tree. He felt like someone or something there was watching him angrily, and something that no one wanted to visit the tree.

Most comments on the BBC 2008 article show that the legend of Alton Old Oak has the truth. Maybe it has something to do with facts or there are other plausible explanations for the big chains wrapped around the old tree.

Some people say that the chain might have been put down by the locals to prevent the tree from collapsing on its own. But no one knows who or when they did it. In addition, the rope might be a simpler solution, given that in the past centuries, chains were associated with restrictions and imprisonment.

According to Stoke Sentinel, a large chain was forged in the early 1800s and had the same time as the legend of the tree. In addition there are stone stairs that lead to trees, with an expanse of open land around it. This is a detail that makes some people believe that there is something about the oak tree.
