All united in the fight against COVID-19 | Reflections #HelpingJau
A little over a year ago, alarms were raised worldwide because a new virus had begun to spread rapidly in many countries; however, 4 months earlier, China was already experiencing the pain of the tragedy more closely.
The worldwide call was to remain in quarantine to stop the chain of transmission of the virus, flights between countries were suspended, including blocking land and air communication between the cities of the countries. The recommendation was not only to remain in quarantine but also to protect our respiratory tract with the use of masks, to keep a physical distance between people, and to wash our hands constantly.
Hace ya poco más de un año se encendieron las alarmas a nivel mundial porque un nuevo virus había empezado a propagarse rápidamente en muchos países; sin embargo, 4 meses antes, China ya vivía el dolor de la tragedia más de cerca.
El llamado mundial fue a permanecer en cuarentena para detener la cadena de transmisión del virus, se suspendieron los vuelos entre países, incluso se bloqueó la comunicación terrestre y aérea entre las ciudades de los países. La recomendación fue no solo mantenernos en cuarentena, sino proteger nuestras vías respiratorias con el uso de tapabocas, mantener distancia física entre las personas y lavar constantemente las manos.

It seemed simple, but the free will was more powerful, restrictions were violated, recommendations were omitted, and little by little the number of infected people increased, hospitals began to collapse, intensive care units were at maximum capacity, and without further ado, the number of deaths increased drastically.
Aquello parecía sencillo, pero lo del libre albedrío pudo más, se violaron las restricciones, se omitieron las recomendaciones, y poco a poco el número de contagiados fue en aumento, los hospitales empezaron a colapsar, las unidades de cuidados intensivos estaban a su máxima capacidad, y sin más, las cifras de fallecidos se incrementaron drásticamente.
Those of us on this side of the pond, on another continent, saw this as something that happened in other countries, something that would not happen to us. But little by little, COVID 19 cases began to be reported in the Americas. Now, as those numbers did not have known faces, we still did not take it seriously, besides, they said that the population at risk were the elderly... why worry then?
And so on, until it finally reached our country, Venezuela, but these were isolated cases, they were still alien to us, somehow we still did not have the necessary empathy with those who were already living the horror of having a sick family member unable to confidently go to a public health center, pay for medical treatment, and even bury a loved one.
Quienes estamos desde este lado del charco, en otro continente, veíamos eso como algo que pasaba en otros países, algo que no nos pasaría a nosotros. Pero poco a poco se empezaron a reportar casos de COVID 19 en América. Ahora bien, como esos números no tenían rostros conocidos, seguimos sin tomarlo con seriedad, además, decían que la población de riesgo eran los ancianos... ¿para qué preocuparnos entonces?
Y así, hasta que finalmente llegó a nuestro país, Venezuela, pero eran casos aislados, estos seguían siendo ajenos a nosotros, de algún modo seguíamos sin tener la empatía necesaria con quienes ya vivían el horror de tener un familiar enfermo sin poder acudir confiados a un centro de salud público, costear un tratamiento médico, e incluso, sepultar un ser querido.
But the virus does not distinguish between sex, age, or social status, so it began to rapidly approach all of us equally; then yes, it began to have a face, the face of a friend, of a relative, of a neighbor, of an acquaintance.
Deaths became close, and by the blows, we had to understand that this is real, that it exists, that it can be deadly, and that it will not stop by itself, that it depends largely on us to avoid contagion because no one is exempt from suffering from the disease.
Pero el virus no distingue de sexo, de edades, ni status social, así que empezó a acercarse con rapidez a todos nosotros por igual; entonces sí, empezó a tener un rostro, el rostro de un amigo, de un familiar, de un vecino, de un conocido.
Las muertes se hicieron cercanas, y a los golpes tuvimos que entender que esto es real, que existe, que puede ser mortal, y que no se detendrá por si solo, que depende en gran medida de nosotros evitar el contagio porque nadie está exento de padecer la enfermedad.
Fortunately, the hope of overcoming these hard times for humanity is present, in many countries have already begun to vaccinate the most vulnerable population, sooner rather than later a high percentage of the world's population will have the necessary antibodies to fight the virus.
Afortunadamente, la esperanza de superar estos momentos tan duros para la humanidad se hace presente, en muchos países ya han comenzado a vacunar a la población más vulnerable, más temprano que tarde un alto porcentaje de la población mundial tendrá los anticuerpos necesarios para combatir el virus.
Unfortunately, we Venezuelans will have to wait a little longer, waiting for mercy to be present in those who direct the destinies of this nation and setting aside the ambition of power, give way to health policies in line with the crisis we are suffering today.
Lamentablemente, lo venezolanos tendremos que esperar un poco más, esperar que la misericordia se haga presente en quienes dirigen los destinos de esta nación, y apartando la ambición de poder, den paso a políticas sanitarias acordes a la crisis que hoy padecemos.
For the time being, we have an individual and collective responsibility to take care of ourselves and others, to protect ourselves to protect others, to support each other as brothers and sisters.
The measures remain the same as at the beginning, nothing has changed, only the virulence and lethality of COVID 19, so friends let's not forget the importance of wearing a mask, the hygiene of our hands, and what is even more important social distancing.
Por lo pronto, tenemos una responsabilidad individual y colectiva, cuidarnos y cuidar a los demás, protegernos para proteger a otros, apoyarnos como hermanos.
Las medidas siguen siendo las mismas que al principio, nada ha cambiado, solo la virulencia y letalidad del COVID 19, así que amigos no olvidemos la importancia del uso del tapabocas, la higiene de nuestras manos, y lo que es aún más importante, el distanciamiento social.
As hard as it may be for us, these are not times for celebrations or fraternal encounters, the hugs that we long to give to our loved ones will only be possible if we are safe and sound, let's not exchange a moment of fun for a life of regrets.
Por duro que nos resulte, no son tiempos para celebraciones, ni encuentros fraternales, los abrazos que tanto añoramos dar a nuestros seres queridos serán posible solo si estamos sanos y salvos, no cambiemos un instante de diversión, por una vida de lamentos.
