Un poco sobre mí/ A little about me. By Gema

Hola, Steemers. Me llamo Gema Medina, soy de Venezuela y tengo 62 años de edad. Vivo en Caracas, una urbe cosmopolita y caótica a la vez, con un ritmo de ajetreo singular, que descansa los fines de semana y días feriados, de tanto avatar y correrías callejeras. Me he dedicado desde hace ya unos cuantos años al quehacer editorial, al oficio de construir ese maravilloso artificio llamado libro, vital para el entretenimiento y el conocimiento. Comencé en este mundo editorial en una empresa que hacía textos para estudiantes de primaria y secundaria. Entrar en contacto con ese tipo de obras, una vez ya alcanzada la edad madura, fue como volver a transitar por esos pasillos de mi escuela. olorosos a tiza y a raspadura de creyón; o los del liceo, llenos de multígrafos, batas blancas de laboratorio, resmas de papel, y deseos de libertad. Luego, proseguí en una editorial mucho más compleja, dedicada a dar a conocer a escritores y escritoras inéditas, a la construcción de colecciones novedosas, que iban desde las ciencias sociales hasta la poesía o la literatura infantil. Aquí ejercí como correctora de pruebas lo que me llevaba a marcar sobre el papel esos pequeños jeroglíficos, ahora en desuso, que aseguraban la futura pulcritud ortográfica y sintáctica de los textos. Además de disfrutar de mi oficio me gusta leer y escribir ensayos literarios, ya que siento que este género permite indagar en aspectos de la (ir) realidad desde varios ángulos y puntos de vista, sin caer en los absolutismos y dogmas. Y en ese buscar, en ese querer plasmar las ideas en escritura surgió un trabajo ensayístico que realicé con pasión y que me permitió compartir un puesto interesante con dos escritores más, y me hizo acreedora del primer lugar en el Primer Concurso Nacional de Ensayos César Rengifo.

Hello, Steemers. My name is Gema Medina. I'm Venezuelan and I'm 62 years old. I live in Caracas, both a cosmopolitan and chaotic city, which with a singular hustle rhythm rests on weekends and holidays of its adventures and street flow. I have dedicated myself for a few years to the editorial work, to the occupation of creating that wonderful device named book, vital for knowledge and entertainment. I started in this publishing reality within a company that published texts for elementary and high school students. Getting in touch with this type of books, once my age of maturity had been reached, was like going back once again through the halls of my schools, the smell of chalk and crayon scrape; or high school, full of mimeographs, white lab coats, reams of paper, and desires for freedom. Then, I carried on into a more complex editorial, dedicated to publicizing unpublished writers, to the construction of novelty collections, ranging from social sciences to poetry or children's literature. Here I exercised as a proofreader which led me to mark on paper those little hieroglyphs, now disused, which ensured that the spelling and syntactic were neat in the future of the texts. In addition to enjoying my occupation I love to read and write literary essays, since I feel that the essays allow us to investigate aspects of (un)reality from different perspectives or points of view, without falling into absolutisms nor dogmas. And in that quest, in that mission to translate ideas into writings, an essay work emerged that I carried out with a lot of passion and that allowed me to share an interesting position with two more writers, and made me achieve the first place in the First National Essay Contest César Rengifo of Venezuela.

De mi vida personal, puedo decir que me encanta el día a día de las ciudades: la gente, la diversidad cultural, las vistas de Caracas desde lo alto de un piso 21 de la torre Norte del Silencio. Desde aquí, se tiene una amplia visión de lo que es esta urbe latinoamericana: por el Norte, el cerro El Ávila, imponente reservorio de vegetación que otorga frescura a este valle caraqueño y regala una vista que muestra la inmensidad del Caribe y lo grande y bella que es Caracas; por el Sur, miles de viviendas construidas en las laderas de los cerros, colorean el paisaje con el tono rojizo de arcilla horneada sin frisar y sin pintura, que sostienen los muros de las casas de nuestras barriadas populares. Por el Este, grandes edificaciones de materiales novedosos, imprimen un sello de modernidad a esta capital latina que comparten el escenario con las opulentas urbanizaciones incrustadas entre bellos parques nacionales. Por el Oeste, el matizado verdor de árboles frondosos adorna las escalinatas del paseo El Calvario y que sirven de marco a lo que conocemos como los superbloques de la Urbanización 23 de Enero. Yace allí, esa parte que es patrimonio arquitectónico de la humanidad creada por el célebre arquitecto Carlos Raúl Villanueva conocida como Urbanización El Silencio.

From my personal life, I can say that I love the day-to-day life of cities: the people, the cultural diversity, the views I see of Caracas from the top of a 21st floor of the Silence's North Tower. From this place, you have a broad vision of what this Latin American city is all about: in the North, the hills of El Ávila National Park, an impressive reservoir of vegetation that gives freshness to the valleys of Caracas and gives a view that shows the immensity of the Caribbean and the magnificence and beauty that this city offers; in the South, thousands of houses built on the slopes of hills tint the landscape with a reddish tone of baked clay with no frieze nor paint, a type of clay that support the walls of the houses of our popular neighborhoods. For the East, large buildings of innovative materials print a stamp of modernity to this Latin capital that share the stage with the opulent urbanizations embedded into the beautiful national parks. To the west, the tinged greenery of lush trees adorns the steps of El Calvario promenade and serve as a framework for what we know as the blocks of flats of the Urbanization 23 de Enero. There lies that part that is an architectural heritage of humanity created by the famous architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva known as Urbanización El Silencio.

De mi paso por las escuelas, estudié Idiomas Modernos, en la modalidad inglés-francés, y después pasé a Letras. Para mí, esta dupla ha sido de gran utilidad. Las herramientas que adquirí con esta formación me han permitido desenvolverme dentro de un campo laboral amplio, versátil, e interesante. A partir de ellas tuve la oportunidad de entrar en contacto con personas de otras latitudes, intercambiar puntos de vista y opiniones, a la vez que se adquirían nociones de la vida en otros países. De igual forma, la literatura me permitió indagar en obras de autores y autoras que expresan un sinnúmero de historias, de verdades, de ilusiones, de situaciones que ayudan a formar el alma y el espíritu. Para salir un poco de la parte académica les quiero decir que tengo una mascota, “un chat noir”, que me regaló mi hijo Aureliano hace ya unos tres años. Es un gato hermoso, cariñoso solo con mi hijo y conmigo, que bufa a todo aquel que no sea alguno de nosotros dos así lo haya visto todos los días en casa. Su historia comenzó siendo Marla. Desde que llegó a casa pensábamos que era hembra hasta que nos dimos cuenta de que este no era su sexo por lo que optamos por cambiar de Marla a Marlon, nombre al que responde con mucho agrado.

From my time in the schools, I studied Modern Languages, in the English-French modality, and then went on to Literature. For me, this pair has been very useful. The tools I acquired with this training have allowed me to develop within a broad, versatile, and interesting field of work. From them I had the opportunity to get in touch with people from other latitudes, exchange points of view and opinions, while acquiring notions of life in other countries. Similarly, literature allowed me to navigate into the works of authors that express countless stories, truths, illusions, situations that help shaping soul and spirit. Now to speak something else besides the academic part, I want to share with you that I have a pet, “un chat noir, which my son Aureliano brought home about three years ago. He is a beautiful cat, affectionate only with my son and with me, he huffs anyone who is not one of us even if he sees them each day at home. His story began as a she named Marla. At first, with Marla's arrival into our home, we thought she was female until we realized that this was not his gender, so we opted to change his name from Marla to Marlon, a name he answers to with pleasure.

Mi interés en formar parte de esta comunidad radica en el hecho de que buscando opciones para trabajar de una manera más libre en eso que nos gusta hacer, como lo es escribir y leer, me encontré con la noticia de que existe este sitio web que permite hacer precisamente lo que nos apasiona, y que funciona como un blockchain en el que todos y todas pueden generar ingresos. Partiendo de allí, me entusiasmé y en primer lugar busqué información entre los amigos y amigas que ya estaban interactuando por aquí. Además de eso, me permití leer algunos textos ya publicados en Steemit. Debo confesar que me encontré con unos de una gran calidad literaria, que me dejaron suspendida. Tópicos extraños, sobre mundos no tan extraños. Realidades duras, algunas, emocionantes, y tristes otras. En fin, todo un mundo de opiniones y sensaciones que me invitan a participar.

De aquí, de este pequeño self-portrait, comenzará entonces mi transitar por Steemit en donde espero que se expanda toda una corriente de creatividad. Ahora, a compartir.

My interest in being part of this community lies in the fact that looking for options to work freely in what we like to do, things like writing and reading, I was informed of this website exists that allows you to exercise your passions, and as it works as a block chain everyone can generate income. Starting from there, I got excited and started to look for information among the friends who were already interacting in here. On top of that, I allowed myself to read texts published on Steemit. I confess that the great literary quality of some, have left me pleasantly surprised. Strange topics, in regards to not so strange worlds. Hard realities, some exciting, and others sad. In short, a whole world of opinions and feelings that invite me to participate.

From here on, from this quick self-portrait, I will then begin my journey through Steemit where I expect a whole stream of creativity to expand. Now to share.
