Close shave

avatar

Yesterday I posted a reply to a post I came across; It was a reasonable comment, not judgemental or aggressive, simply pointing out that plagiarism is not acceptable here.

The user is new and on delving deeper I found he (assuming it is a he) had only posted several times since January. The post I read was a cut and pasted post, confirmed, as I found the website it had been taken from.

I replied that plagiarism isn't welcome here, nor is vote-begging-comments which is how I'd come across the user in the first place. The reply I received from them had a challenging tone, and the second was overtly aggressive.

That second post asked who I thought I was, who put me in control, why I was looking at other people's posts and suggested I should mind my own business.

This sort of fired me up a little, I'll be honest.

Plagiarism is a short-cut; Cheating in fact. It seeks to cheat the community into voting, or engaging with, a user who has not put in the effort to create their own content. It is disrespectful to the community. It is also disrespectful to the person who legitimately created that content.

So, I got a little fired up at that second reply and was in the middle of writing my own tersely worded reply to that user when a third message came in...This one was apologetic and asked for my help. Hmm, seemed a pretty quick turn-around.

I wrote a lengthy reply dot-pointing several tips on creating a post and another list on some basic do's and do not's on the blockchain. I haven't got a response yet, and guess I probably won't.

I understand it's difficult to know what to do here, that it is complicated. It's for that reason my initial reply was simply a suggestion rather than a downvote. However I don't understand the logic behind a new account wasting an opportunity to engage with a larger, and more established account, with an aggressive or challenging tone. It's not very productive.

Human nature is a strange thing...That account probably thought aggressive behaviour would make me leave them alone, but is leaving them alone really what's needed here? I didn't think so obviously, which is why I stepped in to help, or at least direct that user.

I think that person had a fairly close shave today. Had someone else come across their post they maybe have found themselves downvoted rather than have the chance to learn something. Maybe they would have found themselves on a blacklist and then maybe would have simply drifted away after having every post downvoted to oblivion.

I don't know if my assistance will make any difference to that new user; For all I know they will continue to plagiarise, get little to no reward and engagement then fall away like so many others. I hope not though, because we need people to stay, which is why I threw my two cents worth of advice down on my initial reply to that user.

Should I have minded my own business and not tried to address this user? Was it intrusive of me or is it everyone's responsibility to help new people to keep the blockchain free of plagiarism and to do what we can to help people stay around?

What would you have done?

I think you did the correct thing and we all should take similar action.

While unlikely, give the benefit of doubt - a few instructions on how to post properly is the right thing to do....if the behavour continues, or its seen as deeply not appreciated - then we don't want those types of people here.

I kindda live by a two strike rule - burn me twice (maybe because I'm soft and will try to see the good in people), but never a third time.

I give people one chance mostly, two at a pinch. I haven't heard back from my last message outlining a few helpful guidelines...Probably won't. Let's see how that person rolls out from here huh?

You did what a good user of the blockchain should. Try to talk to them and educate them. If they react like that then you know they are here for the wrong reason. Would you mind sharing the link to the post?

I'm not sure my help will do any good. Here's the link and the comment thread.

Thanks, just a quit look and he seemed to change his tone... hmm weird. Oh well I will share it with the SFR guys to keep an eye on. They might already know this user. Thanks again. ✌🏼

I can only surmise he saw my SP and decided it might be good to get some votes from me, (upvotes), or maybe someone else told him to pull his head in. I'd come across him vote-begging on someone else's account so maybe she told him.

I think I did my part and now all I got is downvotes for spammers, plagiarists, etc. (Especially since the recent turn of events with those that were doing that until now.)

I'll have a look. Sorry for the delay...Coronavirus is doing it's best to fuck up my day at work.

You did the right thing. I usually try to do a similar thing when I'm in a good mood but when I'm not they get downvoted. So it's probably good for them that I'm currently not going out of my feed again.

Yep, I hear ya! I'd normally just downvote it but decided against it as we need more people around...Trust me, after the aggressive response I wanted to simply downvote it.

I hope you're going ok. I cancelled my Tasmania trip today...A bit sad about that but there's not much choice I guess. Bloody virus.

I think extending the proverbial olive branch is the way to go.
New users have a lot to learn and there is a continual learning curve.
But, he/she will show their true colors probably sooner than later.

Yes I agree. I haven't been back to check yet, but will do so today and see what I see...With my finger hovering over the downvote button.

It's odd how our instinctive reactive behaviour is often the worst thing for us when it comes down to it. That old saying, "don't bite the hand that feeds," comes to mind here. To often we perceive a friendly attempt to help as an attack and go on a return attack. Yet the worse we make that potential ally feel, the less likely they are to want to help.

Another sad fact of human nature mini...We have a raft of personality dysfunctions...But then, are they dysfunctions or just the way we're built? Who knows I guess.

That account hasn't posted again yet, although he replied whinging and asking me how he could possibly post original content because his english is bad. I think he won't get it.

[Finger poised, ready to DV.]

Hmmm. Perhaps write in their mother tongue and paste a Google translation underneath like many others do whose native language isn't English. 🤦‍♀️

There is certainly a gap for the language divisions, but if people don't want to work on that, what can you do?

Thank you for the engage, btw.

Nah, he had a good enough command of the english language to tell me to bugger off and mind my own business so yeah...It's DV's all the way now I think.

You're welcome for the [engage]. I like handing it out. Also, here's a couple other things you may find useful.

I have no idea what Spam is and figure no one has ever eaten it, but it seems to be flying off the shelves at the supermarket.

Lol.

Maybe he found the Google translate worked well for telling people to bugger off. 🤣

Ooooh, white gold!
Shaun swears by spam for carp fishing. Doesn't use it here, though, because the turtles like it too much and apparently they're slimy and smelly. Maybe people are going to catch turtles for their supper. 🤔

Well, the Chinese wet markets slaughter turtles amongst the other animals from around the world so yeah, they eat them I guess. Of course, deep in a Chinese wet market is where this Covid-19 thing started, so I'm not sure eating foods like that is legit. But what do I know.

Howdy sir galenkp! that was definitely the right way to handle it, we need people to stay. His attitude is simply amazing though and my guess is he won't last long.

Nah, he won't last long...Neither will steem when Hive starts up.
