American-Australian collaboration

Collaboration: The action of working with someone to produce something. I think we all know the meaning of the word right? So, now we've got that out of the way I have to say that this post is not at all about a collaboration.; It's all about a single person's endeavour to hand-craft a product for another.

I refer to a fellow called @freedompoint a resident of America and the creator of the down under knife. So where do I fit into this? Well, the down under knife is indeed my knife. I'm down under, in Australia you see, and that's where the knife is headed.

[Above photo courtesy of freedompoint.]

Yesterday mad-genius @freedompoint revealed the completed product by video and I have to say that I am very pleased with the final result. It seems to be everything we discussed when coming up with the knife and as far as I can tell looks like it will handle everything I'll throw at it. You can see the reveal post here: Check it out y'all!

Today, after some back and forth on discord, looking at photos and generally celebrating freedompoint's awesomeness I made the payment for shipping and the knife itself via PayPal which seemed easy enough; The knife is now on its way to the post office for the 27 gazillion mile journey to Australia. I'm excited.

You guys may be looking at this knife, reading my excitement about receiving it and wondering what the hell...I get it. The thing is though, that for someone who uses a knife all the time having a well-made custom-built knife can mean all the difference. Could I have bought a production-line made knife? Of course! But it wouldn't really have much meaning and in this day and age would almost certainly not be as well-crafted. So I went custom. It will handle what I ask it to whether I'm hunting or out and about in the country camping etc.

I think it's also very cool that I have a record of how my knife came to be via the videos freedompoint did along the way, and that I have had a little input into the final product from a design and finish perspective. It's all very cool, and for a guy who's cutting, slashing and stabbing things all the time...Well, it will see a lot of use and will become a highly-valued item in my kit. My only concern is that I will like it so much I ask him to do more!

Anyway, I'd like to take some credit for the collaboration however I cannot. The credit goes to the craftsman @freedompoint who obviously applies his skill and attention to detail along with passion for knife-making to create his knives. I look forward to receiving it and will do a post once that happens.

Thanks for reading and all the best.

A bold knife for a bold man. Nice. I assume it's morning in Koala's country so have a great day!
Mine is about to get finished in about 15 minutes or so. Depends on how many comments/replies I get 😁.

Haha, yeah it's a pretty bold statement isn't it? So keen to see it in real life.

Yes, just got to work. Friday morning here. Feeling a bit drained for the end of the week to be honest, but I'll push though. 😄

Have him send it to me, and I will watch it until you move in next door, ROFLOL!

Very nice blade!

Nice blade for sure! I have considered making a few, but need to get moved to the lake homestead first. With snow on the way, everything is in flux....

Just don't cut yourself!

Haha, yeah not cutting myself is high on the list. I have to look into a sheath once it get's here...I'm probably going to get something custom-made in leather and suitably tough as I'll be in the outback with this thing a lot. Looking forward to it arriving.

Not getting cut is important, and that one looks like it could do a quick job of "ouch"...LOL!

I have a polymer sheath on my hunting knives, I carry a triple set, all sharpened differently. Leather would be a good choice, especially if you can get a formed fit sheath made there.

I hope it arrives soon!

I think it's make short work of a finger for sure. From what I know about @freedompoint he doesn't do things by halves and so I expect it to turn up sharp as.

I'd like a polymer sheath but don't know anyone who could do it for me. There's a few good leather-workers around though and I think that's be the way to go. Not sure what style I'll go for yet, but will have a think about it once I see the knife.

That does look like a very durable knife.
The name makes total sense 'The down under knife.'

Yes, it's pretty cool.

We (Australians) don't tend to refer to Australia as down under much, i think it was an 1980's thing...The rest of the world does though and so the down under knife sort of works. I'm looking forward to it arriving.

I do not see a mention of a sheath. Is @freedompoint making one or are you?

Well spotted. He doesn't make sheaths so I will make one or have one made depending on what quality I prefer. Probably leather.

Right. I don't do too much leather work these days. My skill is in the knife, and it is hard to wrap an awesome blade in a sheath that looks like it was made by a drunk kindergardener haha

Hi @galenkp

Before writing this comment, and after reading the hahaha publication
The first thing I did was visit the account of his friend @freedompoint, and I saw all the videos of how the process of manufacturing your knife was.

From now on he has a new follower,

The work he does is excellent, I congratulate you on your new toy lol.

Greetings friend and from Venezuela I hope you are well in your country, here comes some news that is not encouraging, take care of you and your family my prayers are with you.

Hey there! Thanks for reading and commenting...Yes @freedompoint has some skills for sure. The process of working with him has been pleasant and I have to say, I feel he is a legit guy someone I could sit down and have a coffee with...It's been a great process. I'm glad you've given him a follow because not only does he make some great knives, he has some great, and positive, thoughts that we could all learn and gain from.

Yes, you are right...Australia is on fire...A lot of it, and many have lost everything they own. It has been the worst fire season on record and with three months to go, who knows what may happen. My wife and I are fine at this stage however I appreciate your thoughts.

I hope you have a great day, and weekend ahead.

Thank you, at the time of writing here in Venezuela it is 8:30 PM on Thursday, January 9.
But thanks for the good wishes for my weekend.

I hope that everything gets better. by the way a comment out of context when I read the title of your publication the first thing I thought about was the help that the United States is giving with firefighters to undermine that terrible fire.
Happy weekend to friend.

Howdy sir galenkp! Wonderful, just beautiful but tough. I love the thickness of it and I know the quality of the steel makes it unbreakable for the toughest jobs. I always have a knife on me in the country and grew up carrying one about that size.

I think it's going to be just about perfect for my use which is going to be quite varied from general outdoors and camping duty to actually cutting things that used to be alive. (Maybe some that are still alive? - Just kidding!)

I'm looking forward to it coming through. Shouldn't be too far away now.

It's unlikely I'll do a video, certainly not with me on it but might take some video of the knife possibly. We'll see I guess.

I might do a video though, depends how I'm feeling. I've done them before here. Will see how it goes.

I have no idea how hard a video would be to do because I've never tried. Plus lots of people say that Dtube is hard to work with.

I've tried Dtube a few times and it never works for me. I just put them on Youtube and link them. It's reasonably easy to do really. I use a video editor in my MacBook and add some stock music and that's about it. The issue is putting myself on video which I'm not keen on.

Yes sir I've heard that Dtube doesn't work for a large percentage who try to use it so I think they need to do some upgrades. No way I'd be keen on that self video stuff either! Guys like freedompoint make it look so natural.
