Haworthia weed in bloom

avatar
(Edited)

It all started with one small rosette some years ago I got in one of those little 5 cm pots. The first year it was all learning process. I left her on the sun and she got terrible sunburn. Then not enough water in summer and the fatty, jelly-like leaves got all shriveled.
But I got there and now it is my private weed plant that keeps growing offshits that I keep giving away and it blooms every year.

Haworthia cooperi

Haworthias are native to South Africa. Multiple rosettes will create a nice, green clumps with time. This type has very specific, almost see-though leaves. Depending on a type (and there is few just among Cooperi) they can be more jelly like or less. In nature the plant is often partially buried in sand and just those jelly tips are above the ground.
They don't feel jelly to the touch though. Very firm, thick leaves that store plenty of water to survive dry time (it will look pretty miserable when not watered for a long time, but it will live).

And it is the leaves and the overall compact shape why I grow this plant. I have two types of Haworthias and the both bloom the same way. The flowers are very small, white with some dark beige stripes. They appear on very long stems and when they fade they make terrible mess :p
Nop, not a fan of the blooms.

The whole plant looks like this.
I will have to repot it next year and hope I dont break off to many of the babies. I like them all together like that.
But if you want, you can just snap one and plant it in a pot with dry soil. It will root in no time!
You can actually see some roots hanging on the sides :p Desperate little thing.

And then Furry Assistant decided it is time to finish the nonsense shooting.
