Five orchids in bloom - my little paradise.

Growing orchids is not all pretty and fun. Besides the constant watering according their needs, (and some like it more, some less), adjusting fertilizes also to their needs, remembering which ones need cool winter rest and which don't, battling with bugs that show up out of nowhere and want to eat the plants, there are also those lost bark chips on the floor that you accidentally step on. Yea.. I don't have Lego's - bark chips do the job great.
And I will not even mention the amount of orchids I managed to kill in the past few years. Beautiful orchids that just refused to live with me and another bunch that I would to have, but I don't have anymore more space for them. I am not sure which part is more heartbreaking...

But then the time comes when it all pays off. When they start to bloom and if you are lucky, they bloom in the same time and look like a giant, exotic bouquet.
And boy... it smells heavenly!

This year (right now) I have 5 of them blooming. You can see them all on the photo below. Plus there are another 3 that grow their flowers spikes, so they bloom later on in the year.

The star is of course Dendrobium Nobile Spring Dream. It is currently my oldest orchid and lives with me for about 6 years already. I got it as most supermarket orchids with just 2 canes and some flowers on. Over the years it was split, produces keikis (baby plants) that I gave away and managed to grow to giant with over 15 canes right now. Every year it grows more and more of them and I get more and more flowers. It is a pure mess, but it is a gorgeous mess. I dare to say there is over 100 flowers on that plant right now. They are so packed and so compact I cannot see the canes and some don't even manage to open properly, because there is simply no more room. The flowers will last for a few weeks filling the room with amazing floral aroma.

Another giant that grows faster than I manage to repot it is this Oncidium Sharry Baby with lovely vanilla fragrance. You can read more about it here.
I think my cat likes it too as I find less and less flowers on the stems....

The tiny baby that you can see in the very front on the group shot is Dendrobium Pocket Lover. I did show it better in THIS recent post. Now you can see the difference between the biggest and smallest Dendrobium I own.

The third Dendrobium that just started to open is Dendrobium Nobike Komet King with its big, dark purple blooms. I was expecting more flowers, cause the canes grew up nicely, but she only produced 1-2 buds on 3 seperate canes. That is ok... the canes can bloom again next season from the spots they skipped this year. Plus new canes are starting to show so it might be a nice show.

Last buy not least the orange beauty. Procatavola Golden Peacock - with only one flower this time, but she can bloom multiple times a year, so I am ok with that too. Plus it is bigger than normally so it kind of redeemed itself.

And that is all. I left them all on my kitchen table like this to enjoy the view...
If you want paradise - make it yourself, right?
