Blooming cactus - Gymnocalycium damsii var. tucavocense
There is a lot if first time bloomers this year. Some grown from seed, some from little cuttings that needed their time to grow roots first and make sure they are big enough to throw some flashy flowers at me.
This is one of those. I received it two years ago as a part of a plant swap (thank you @ludmila.kyriakou!). And now it is blooming for me too :)
Gymnocalycium damsii var. tucavocense
This small cactus is native to Bolivia and grows among bushes where he is partially protected from the sun. It does like a little richer soil than most cacti.
It blooms from quite early age and can easily grow into larger clumps.
I received it as a cute little, rootless baby. I planted it right away in a small pot and kept it at home first. Just to keep an eye on it and make sure the sun doesn't get it too much. It grew roots nicely and started to get bigger. No blooms, but its was expectable.
This winter I decided to put it outside so it gets used to the sun and temperature changes slowly. And buy oh boy! Did he love it or what!? It started to grow so fast and get that nice shiny skin.
Some weeks ago I noticed tiny little buds form and that was just a cherry on top. I still thought it is too small to bloom, but I guess that's how they are. It is not a very big plant and still grows in a 5 cm pot. Two flowers for a start is quite awesome!
And as I was taking the photos I notices some tiny little offshoots emerging!
It has some scars as you can see. I am not sure what happened here. It happened to more of my cacti last year. Either way I watered them too little, or there were some spider mites attacking them and I didn't see it... Not sure. What matters is that they all started to grow this year fine. With some scars.
A day earlier it looked like this:
Those flower can really grow fast and bloom when you least expect it.
And in the evening of the day I took all the flowers photos it finaly opened! I have few Gymnocalycium cacti and I noticed they do prefer to bloom in the early afternoon. Most cacti will start open the flowers as soon as the sun hits them in the morning. Those will wait... and will open when the other start to close for the night.
And I will have more Gymno cacti show! It is their time now :)
