What Does Your Username Mean? Let's Have Some Fun!

avatar

Hive is an interesting place from many aspects. You can use a username and a profile photo that you choose yourself and it doesn't even have to be your photo. I have a photographic memory, tend to remember profile pictures easily. Usernames are the one I should remember, as those are unique and can't be changed. Once you choose a username, that's it, you bear the consequences. My username is nothing special, it's my name and an initial, boring actually.

The other day I was talking to @bil.prag on Leofinance and we figured out we're neighbors in a certain sense. Trying to figure out what his name mean, combining with the new info that came to light, I figured his username is tied to a location. I thought Bil could be a name and prag could be Prague, which is not so far from my country. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. I'll let him tell you himself what his username means and how he got it, trust me, it's interesting.

Another mystery for me was @melinda010100's username. The name is clear as the name Melinda is a well known one, in many languages, but the numbers after? Every time I saw her username I thought the numbers come from the binary numeral system, which uses only two symbols: typically "0" (zero) and "1" (one). One nice day I asked her what it means and what I thought it meant. I guess she had a good laugh. She'll tell you the story I hope.

Another good one is @plantstoplanks. It took me a good few months to learn this nice lady's username. Every time I wanted to tag her, I had to check first and copy/paste it to be sure. If you know her, it's easy to figure it out what it means though.

If we look at the big picture, I guess many of us are in trouble with usernames, especially the difficult ones. Having users from all over the world, this is somehow normal. One good example to support what I am saying here is what happened during the live shows r0nd0n was running before the fork. Poor guy had to get those willing to speak on air and I'm going to butcher this name was said a lot those days.

One of the usernames I can't even learn, keep in mind is @tbnfl4sun, let alone know what it means. In my mind this nice gentleman who makes these awesome cartoons is simply tbn as the rest I still need to learn it. What does his name mean? 🤷‍♀ I have no idea, maybe he can tell us himself.

So today I invite you to join in the fun and share your story, tell us what your username means, where it comes from, or if you have made such mistakes like me, guessing what a username means and you were totally wrong.

This initiative is not new, has been on before, but people come and go so it's good to renew it from tine to time.

Feel free to tag your friends but keep in mind that excessive tagging is considered spam and is not welcome.

Great subject! I suppose my username is a combination of my nickname and my love for sarcasm and being a smartass. Kinda a cheeky combination which also makes it seems like I love smarties. and so @mimismartypants was born!

That's a great one. Smartypants I would have known but mimi would have been a mystery 😁

I wanted a name that would be easy to remember and quick to type as I have a lot of accounts bearing different names. While I registering for a name on the other blockchain, Adam came to mind because it's another nickname some people calls me on another site. But the name was taken so I just wanted a name that's easy to remember, why not spell Adam backwords? Mada. Thus, adamada was born.

It sounded ok. It didn't have any other particular meaning to me. It sounded Asian enough so that was enough until someone asked what it meant (made me curious too). I looked it up and the closest common world linked to it was "feminine". That's also the reason why I use a female avatar just cause.

Lol, That's an interesting story. To tell you the truth, it doesn't seem Asian to me and every time I tried to read it seemed like I'm stuttering 😂 no offense. See? What one can find out if there's a post.

None taken, it's a random name but I learned to love it. Interesting to see the other stories users have made under the post. Thank you!

I have a photographic memory, tend to remember profile pictures easily.

The same thing. but i feel it is not even a photo, i connect the shape and color of it to the character. and another problem for me is that i missread usernames and that is how i call them in my head :) when someone changes the photo i need a lot of time to adjust :)

Here is the story of my username:
As i wanted to register to instagram but for some strange reason did not want to connect it with my FB profile i had to chose a Username. Marko was not available. And instagram was giving me all that great suggestions of Marko531, Marko_54782 and i did not want to have stupid number after my name. After some time of trying different things and a lot of frustration with it i remembered something. I am a big fan of Terry Pratchett and i just finished his book Reaper Man where Death quit his job, and went to live with people. And It had the same problem as i did, it needed a name. And it's solution was simple, Bill as a common name, and Door as the first thing that is saw. Ok the second thing, Sky was not accepted by the old lady that wanted to hire it. So @bil.prag is actually the Serbian translation of of Death's name in Terry Pratchett's book Reaper Man.

you can also find a post of evolution of my social network use and username change here:

I have never read a humouriat writer that tells stories the way he does hey. I'm actually trying to collect older prints where possible, you know the busy covers with the characters all going on about their story. So I'm also looking out for the at old book shops and second hand book sales. I sometimes score a good bargain too :)

But I mostly read on ebooks these days. Just a little convinient with my current lifestyle and I don't need a night light! Your comment actually got me to open my book again. Currently reading Moving pictures. Making money was good as well. My favourites are the books staring the watch and the witches though!

Yeah those are the ones. It depends on the prints though, I think the US has different covers. If you Google you'll see. For example I bought a copy of unseen academicals online and got a cover like the one on the bottom left.

Rincewind is indeed a character. They all pretty good if I'm honest. The witches were the ones I met first.. Nanny, granny and Margaret garlic.

Also where is here (as in home)?

Mine is quite simple; Pieter Nijmeijer is a type of pseudonym of my real name. Pieter is my name received at baptism, and Nijmeijer is the surname of the family on my mother's side. So it's pretty close, yet different

Wow, another username I would need time to learn to read and keep in mind. Seems complicated, therefore unique. Thanks for joining!

Mine is so boring. It may seem long at first glance, but once you manage to break it down it's really pretty simple and self explanatory. I wish I had a much cooler username, but I was just too lazy to think of one 🙃

Mine is not at all mysterious, although many people try to figure out the code. 😂20 years ago, I needed a username and it was suggested that it should be letters and numbers. I used my name and added an easy to remember date at the end. January 1st, 2000. I've been using it for so long now that I can type it in my sleep!
