Origin of snake & ladder game

In the 13th century, a poet named Gyandev introduced the game of Snakes and Ladders. Known as Mokshapat during these times, this Game had a significant meaning.

The snakes stand up for evil, such as jealousy, and bring the player back to the board, While the ladders represent good virtue. like devotion, and moving players to the top of the board.

The essence of the game is that the ladder or good virtue takes people to heaven while snakes or evil take people to the cycle of rebirth

I have played the games a lot of times. But never it had occurred to me that the ladder and the snake might depict something other than just the fun.

However, was Gyandev a from Hindu faith? Because, Hindu's one of the fundamental belief is "rebirth" again and again.
