Why do people make graffitis/street art?
I've always wondered about this, growing up in a city where street art was on every wall, and there was always some new painting or "tag" on a wall that was previously clean. I always saw people painting their walls white again over pre-existing graffitis, and then those white walls ended up graffitied again.
I always wondered what the point of it all was. It looked in so bad taste to me before, but then I started growing to understand it: bubbly texts, stylised, colourful. Still, I never got what the point was except some kind of "pride" of leaving a legacy. I actually met a couple taggers. I asked them about it and they were simply proud.
Some walls are simply destroyed, in my opinion, by graffiti, but then, walking by sites with old graffiti that hasn't been cleaned for years, it does give a little nostalgia to look at old wall drawings that were already there when I was growing up.
Why do you think graffiti "artists" do what they do? What do they get out of it, and what is the different part in their perception that makes them think that this is aesthetically appealing?

Some graffiti can be classified as Art ,imho. Very talented stuff here in San Antonio which is the 7th largest city in US.
But I can understand your point because some of it is nothing more than scribble or gang signs :(

I quickly drove by a beautiful area we have in Caracas yesterday, in Los Palos Grandes. It's all so full of vegetation, nice people and nice shops. But there are some abandoned houses that are starting to give it a bad look. The houses that are still inhabited are well-maintained, but the abandoned ones are full of gang signs and scribbles, saw a face drawn once, and some sort of reptile in another wall, but mostly it just seems as if the kids from the neighbourhood had ran by the street just doing random shapes with their paint sprays.

I think in part to share art, Mark territory but also be counter culture and in a way “stand up to ‘The Man’”

Who is this "The Man"? And what are 'ad-hoc murals'?
I was chatting with a tagger on Twitter. I understood his reply as tagging being negative art where the effect is to fight against private property? and call attention to bad socioeconomic realities. The more answers I got, the more questions I had, and I still can't say I understand it.
