Northern Red Bellied Cooter Turtle

Rescued a baby turtle headed for danger. We originally thought it was a snapping turtle but a nice search for the turtles and the good pictures I took let us know it’s a Cooter!

So the little munchkin and I were out for a nice walk today and doing normal guy stuff; breaking sticks, chasing birds and squirrels and picking flowers for mama. We were walking and said hi to one of our neighbors walking her dog and our son said hi to her but gave her a weird look. Thankfully she was nice and said to us ‘do you want to see a turtle?’ Naturally and unfortunately my first question, trying not to get too much attention from my little repeat parrot was ‘...is it alive? (We have a lot of old people where we live and they don’t see wildlife in front of them when driving, there’s been quite a few bunny, squirrel and bird pancakes on the ground lol)’ Thankfully she laughed a bit and said yes of course. I don’t think our son could’ve run any faster lol. The one time of course, I didn’t have my phone while we were walking. What we had to do was fling the little thing onto the grass, off the sidewalk and go find a little container in the recycle bin that we just packed with stuff from our house.

So now that we had the little guy we of course had to go show mama. I was giving her a break by taking him out so she can relax in a quiet house. Little did we know, she had fallen asleep for a short nap on the couch! We both ran into the house and shoved the box in front of her face and she didn’t react too well, sorry babe! LOL Once she cleared the sleep out of her eyes @ssiena saw it and was thinking ‘you woke me up for that?...’ but saw how much the little guy loved it so I think she was less annoyed, at least I hope lol. I at this point did get my phone so I could take a couple pictures of the turtle. We stuffed the thing in a LEGO box that he freed from the box it was hiding in in his closet while I was cleaning yesterday. Little inspector finds everything!

Dirty River or Blue Poison?

So now the dilemma I ran into was to free the little thing in the little brook near us that leads to a major river or to let it go in the nasty pond with poisonous blue water. It was originally going to be the pond so he doesn’t get eaten since there’s only turtles, frogs and muskrats in the pond. We got all the way to the waters edge and I was like ....nah he’s going to grow another head out of his abdomen being in that shit. River it was!

Dilemma number two! How am I going to let the thing go while:

  1. Not getting poison ivy
  2. Not getting ticks all over me
  3. Not letting the thing go and watch it run into an even worse spot I can’t get to.

The riverbank I was tangling with mentally. It’s not that big, only about 7 feet from where I was standing to the water but I wasn’t in any clothing shape to be heading down the bank to the edge to let it go. Besides I had the son in tow, and he wasn’t going there for sure.

Thankfully I had lots of experience in college playing alcohol games throwing stuff in cups and other things so my tossing ability is pretty solid. I got him right in the middle of the water! I couldn’t at first see him since his shell is brown as the water but if you look at my circle you can see the little disc.

I was nervous the thing was stunned and going to drown from that epic throw I made but then he started popping his head up and moving around. I’m assuming it’s the first time he’s been in the water, given that he was hundreds of feet away from it where we found it. Good thing instincts kick in!

It was a lot of fun saving the little thing! We looked it up and one of the things it’s primarily threatened by is people keeping it as a pet lol we considered it but we have a cat and are pretty sure she won’t accept another animal, no matter how cute it is. Plus we have no real space to keep it so best to let nature be outside not inside.

Have you saved any animals? Let me know in the comments!

Nice! That’s a decent sized one. I tried to help a huge one cross last year but I had our son with me then too, but very much a toddler so I couldn’t do much. It was a snapping turtle though too so it had claws and was hissing at me so I didn’t want to risk too much lol

It was actually really funny too, the toy the little stink stole was a ninja turtle LEGO set which he hasn’t had any of those yet. Coincidence!

Gosh its so tiny! I hope it doesn't get like eaten by a bird or something like the moment you like go be free and boom it gets snatched up. Wildlife is really starting to take back land during the lock down, around here, we seeing lots of African penguins walking the street since we're all at home lol

Hahah that’s awesome dude! I can’t imagine seeing a wild penguin on the streets.

I know, I was hoping strongly he wouldn’t get sniped by a hawk or something lol but there’s lots of coverage above him. Thinking seriously about the poor thing too, he definitely has a better chance in the water than in our complex. Some old person hit a 3 foot long adult snapping turtle with their car last year. How the hell do you not see that?! They are more dangerous than the wildlife lol
