A day in Fantiano's Quarries Natural park [ITA-ENG]

The sunny weekend at times allowed me to visit the Quarries of Fantiano, an old tuff extraction site, subject to profound redevelopment by the municipal authority. In the past, this site was inhabited primarily by the citizens of Grottaglie, digging the caves used as houses in the tuff.

Il weekend soleggiato a tratti mi ha permesso di visitare le Cave di Fantiano, un vecchio sito di estrazione del tufo, oggetto di profonda riqualificazione da parte dell'ente comunale. In passato, questo sito è stato abitato in primis dai cittadini di Grottaglie, scavando nel tufo le grotte adibite ad abitazione.

When the population moved in the mid-twentieth century A.D. in the current inhabited nucleus, the site has been the object of intensive extraction of tuff, a type of stone widely used in the past in building construction. Subsequently, the quarries were used as illegal landfills, polluting an important naturalistic territory, including aquifers.

Quando la popolazione si è spostato nella metà del XX secolo d.C. nell'attuale nucleo abitato, il sito è stato oggetto d'intensiva estrazione di tufo, una tipologia di pietra molto utilizzato in passato nelle costruzioni edilizie. Successivamente le cave sono stato utilizzate come discariche abusive, inquinando un territorio naturalistico importante, incluse le falde acquifere.

In recent years, the quarry area has been completely reclaimed, creating a park that can be visited by tourists and creating a tuff stage on which it is possible to sit and admire the various theatrical and musical performances planned especially during the summer.

Negli ultimi anni si è interamente bonificata l'area della cava, creando un parco visitabile dai turisti e creando un palco in tufo su cui è possibile sedersi e ammirare i vari spettacoli teatrali e musicali programmati soprattutto durante il periodo estivo.

The monoliths are very characteristic, this giant tuff rocks that have resisted the brutal force of man and which today are the symbol of the Quarries of Fantiano. The vegetation destroyed during the years of extraction of the tuff has been restored throughout the territory, inserting trees like ancient olive trees, absolute protagonists of the rebirth.

Sono molto caratteristici i monoliti, questa giganti rocce di tufo che hanno resistito alla forza brutale dell'uomo e che oggi sono il simbolo delle Cave di Fantiano. È stata ripristinata in tutto il territorio la vegetazione distrutta durante gli anni di estrazione del tufo, inserendo alberi come ulivi secolari, protagonisti assoluti della rinascita.
