Stay Home Challenge - Climbing Mountains
One thing we really love to do when we´re traveling is hiking. Especially climbing Mountains is always fun. It´s just an awesome feeling when you finally reach that summit.
While I haven´t climbed any real big Mountains in my life yet, I´ve been on some smaller summits here in Australia.
Since even the smallest mountain is currently closed for climbing, I thought I would "travel from home" and show you 3 beautiful ones I climbed in the past.
Mount Ngungun in the Glasshouse Mountains, Australia
The Glasshouse Mountains are a group of small mountains and Mount Ngungung is the sixth highest of them.
With only 253m high, its pretty small, but the walk to the summit is amazing. Its definitely a walk for beginners and has a well maintained walking track to the summit.
From the top you will have a amazing view of the Surroundings and the other mountains. In the photo you can see Mount Coonowrin, also known by its unofficial name Crookneck in the front and in the back the highest of all the mountains Mount Beerwah.
Mount Bishop, Wilsons Promontory Nationalpark, Australia
With a hight of 319m, Mt Bishop is only slightly higher than Mt Ngungun but is way more difficult to climb. It takes about 2hrs return along a steep, narrow path that rewards with breathtaking views out to sea. The walk is a Grade 3 walk and is nearly 7km up and down again.
At the summit you can enjoy magnificent views over the Nationalparks west coast and the offshore islands. It was one of my favourite hikes during our stay in the Wilsons Promontory
Mount William, Grampians Nationalpark, Australia
We´ve been to the Grampians twice already and we had a fantastic time on both visits.
On our second visit we climbed up to the summit of Mt William, the highest Mountains in that Nationalpark and also the highest of the three I showed you today.
Even in summer it can be freezing cold up there and you should definitely bring warm clothes in case the wind blows. I remember that we had a pretty strong icy wind when we were there. But it is worth it to go through that pain as the views from up there are absolutely rewarding. On some winter days you can even see snow covering the sub-alpine landscape.
Here is a proof of how cold it can get. That´s me, look at my red nose. It was summer!
Beautiful views from on top of the glasshouse mountains. I have climbed most of them and did Crookneck before they closed it of many years ago after people had died falling on there climb.
I heard about that. Some of these mountains look small but are dangerous to climb. Did you climbed Mt Cooroora near Pomona?
No I haven't climbed Cooroora.
I've been to all three...Such great spots and reasonably accessible to most. I don't live far from the Grampians so have been there a fair amount, but mainly go the the Flinders for camping trips. Mt Ohlssen Bagge is a good spot and worth the time to hike. https://www.walkingsa.org.au/walk/find-a-place-to-walk/mount-ohlssen-bagge-hike/
I can't recall, have you been over this way? (S.A.)
I Love the Grampians. First time we’ve been there was late summer and we had a heated pool on the caravanpark. Awesome to relax after a hike.
Unfortunately we haven’t been to the Flinders as we had a ferry booked for Tasmania and not enough time left. It’s still so much to see and explore. If we could, We would do the whole trip again and check out what we’ve missed before.
You live in Aus still right? You'll get here someday I guess. There's some spectacular spots in S.A. and the Flinders Ranges are one such location. Tassie is awesome too though!
Still in Australia yes. Hope they don’t send us home end of the month. Would be a nightmare to go back to good old Germany.
We came through S.A. but haven’t seen much apart from Adelaide.
Ah ok hopefully you can hang around a bit longer then, see a little more. I want to go to Germany someday. I did a post about the Eagles Nest a few days ago...Bavarian Alps. Loved it. We'll get to Berlin and other places eventually.
(I live in Adelaide.)
That hike looks great by the way. Not too easy but I like it when it gets a bit challenging.
It's a decent hike for sure. Quite steep in places with rock jumping and hands and feet-work required. Not one to do in the wet. Falling off would ruin your day. Lol. It's worth the effort though. It's right next to Wilpena Pound too...So a double bonus.
