Death, The Destination

"Death, It's the destination we all share. It has always created an impression of something sad in people. It's the way the people before us had done it and it will be the way we will be filling our children's head with."

Professor Whistler is always energetic when he was talking about death, his mouths couldn't catch up with his brain. He is going towards the philosophies that no one never even thought about.

Then there with a beep sound, the ringing of his own phone forced him to come back to the reality, the reality where he is no one. Professor took the phone, he isn't always like this. Using a cell phone in the classroom is not at all his style, but today he is waiting for something else.

There isn't any conversation, he just took the phone and listened to the other end. It is something serious, his pale face started the turn into a little bit red. As always students are now started their chit chats.

"I have to go, I will send notes on the mail" Then he was gone, most of the student's don't even recognize his absence. They all are busy in their own little things.

The professor is walking towards the parking area, in his face, there is fear. He looked at the keys of the car in his hand, there are droplets, he is sweating.

After getting inside the car he looked at the rosary which was hanging in front of him. He closed the eyes for a minute, he isn't praying. He is trying to accept some facts, facts of life.

One more call came to his phone, there's complete silence inside the car. It was a woman voice.

"She's Dead." that was like making the silence more depth. He hung up the call, his hands reached his pocket. It's his purse what he was looking for, he took that out looked at the picture on it. It was taken at their wedding, a little bit old, the edges are faded.

"You are still beautiful" he murmured.

Minutes before he was in the classroom and talking about the other side of death, he was prepared to accept it. But he never thought the pain will be this much. The last one he had in this world is gone.

There's a lot left to do at the hospital, now he is trying to get back normal.

"Don't worry honey, everything will be alright", it was a woman's voice from the back. It's her, his beloved.

He felt like the whole world is turning around, he couldn't understand what's real. She looked exactly like her. But she's now in a bride's dress. The beauty is still there. He looked her in the eye, her's was the face of an innocent child, blushing and smiling.

" Let's go for a ride, you are boring me", he didn't know what to do.

"Are you really her? What's all this", he is trying to touch around to see all this is real.

" If you don't drive, I will be leaving now.", Then she directed towards the door to open it.

"No... No, wait", he started driving.

It's dawn now, it's getting darker. On their left, they could see the ocean. He is looking at her at definite intervals through the mirror. She is like a child, visiting the world at first, looking through the window and enjoying all.

" Honey, do you miss me?" Now tears are on her cheeks.

He is silent now, he couldn't understand anything anymore. He is in both pain and happiness, but the chaos is spreading all over him.

"Come find me", she said that and faded away.

He looked back, she is not there. He looked under the seats and at all the corners. Then when his vision came back to the road, something was coming towards his car. No time left for him to move away, its death, then there is complete darkness.

There is some music playing now, it's something familiar. It's his phone ringing, he opened the eyes. It's afternoon, He could see students and teachers going around, it's the college's staff room. He opened his eyes wider to identify it's real.

The phone is still ringing, he took it. It's now the ninth call, he accepted it and took the phone near his ears. Then there is a smile on his face, a peculiar smile.

THE END

That was powerful!!

Well done you!! I really liked the way you transitioned between the teaching to "the call" to her fading away and him being drawn back after the 9th call.
