What is dCity?

It is a game where you can build your own city on the Hive platform and be the master of your own kingdom.

In this Tutorial we will be going through the following topic, so that if you are completely new, you will be able to understand more about the game and start to build your own City

Content

1. What do I need to play dCity?

2. Is it Free to play dCity?

3. How do I play dCity?

Here we go!

13.JPG

1. What do I need to play dCity?

You need the following:

  • A Computer and stable internet
  • A Hive account and Hive KeyChain
(The steps on how to get a Hive account and Hive Keychain will not form part of this tutorial)
  • Initial Capital (Hive or funds that can be converted into Hive)
(We will go through a bit in the next section as to what amount you are looking at)

2. Is it Free to play dCity?

Unfortunately No, unless someone super generous gives you some assets and their entire city.
(Which is not impossible)

Okay, it is not Free to play, so how much do you need to play this game so that you are still relatively involved and not waiting for days before you can perform another action.

You will need around 400 Hive (as at today's price of 0.31$)
Note: before you stop reading that is just my opinion, you would probably need much less to start playing the game (but you will probably not be performing much actions for a few days)

Double Note: Always do you own research before you put your money in a game. Cryptocurrency is volatile, and you main purpose should not be getting a return but more about having fun in the game

Now to the main section of the post:

3. How do I play dCity?

This is really the most important part of the post, so I will break it down into a few sections:

3.1 How to Log in

Step 1: Open you browser and log into Hive Keychain:
This step assumes you have Hive Keychain installed already

Step 2: once you have all the items in section 1:
Go to the dCity website: https://dcity.io/info

Step 3: Enter your username and log in
Go to the top right corner of the page, and you will see Login
14.JPG

Enter in your Hive account username, and press the log in icon.
16.JPG

You will see a pop up at the top right corner:
15.JPG
Once you read through and comfortable, click the confirm button and you are logged in!

If done correctly, your username should appear as such in the top right corner:
17.JPG

This means that I am logged in, and I have 808 cards, cards refer to the assets that you own in the game, lets go through them in a bit more detail.

3.2 What cards/assets are in the game?

If you got the INFO section of the game:
This is the link: https://dcity.io/info
Or simply click on the INFO icon on top of the screen.

18.JPG

The page will list all cards/assets with basic information:
12.JPG

WOW! Too much information right! This is too complex and you want to exit.

Before you do that, there are mainly 2 types of cards:

  1. Population Card
  2. Business Card

Population Card allows you to increase the population of your city (and also increase a bit of income)

Business Card allows you to increase the income of your city

Most of the cards above are Population or Business Cards with different numbers attached to population and income. Does that make it bit simpler. Hope it does. Here is an example:

image.png

This card is called Basic Home, it is a Population card
This card will give your city:

  • +4 in Population,
  • +1 in Income

Lets go through another card!

19.JPG

This card is called Bank, it is a Business Card
This card will give your city:

  • +30 in Income,
  • +10 in Popularity
  • +20 in Workers

Now I know you have some questions

  • What are Workers? To run a city you need workers right, but you need the population can fill the place of a worker. In this case, the Bank card can employ up to 20 workers.
  • What is Popularity? Glad you asked. So your popularity boosts your population. How? The higher your popularity, the higher the boost.

If you are really interested in Maths:

Popularity: Gives % bonus to Population. Math: (Popularity^0.7)100

Now that we have gone through Popularity, lets go through an interesting card!

20.JPG

This card is called Garbage Dump, it is a Business Card
This card will give your city:

  • -30 in Popularity

However, if you have more than 10 different cards in your city, you will get

  • +30 in Popularity

This is especially useful if you want to boost your city's population.

There are more cards, but they are quite self-explantory. The exciting thing is that there are actually new cards being released very soon, but that is for another post. Now you may be wondering how you can buy these cards!

3.3 How do I buy these cards?

There are really 3 ways:

  1. Buy from the market
  2. Buy a random card and open it
  3. Buy from another user (over the counter)

3.3.1 Buy from the Market
Click on the MARKET icon at the of the screen
21.JPG

You will then see this:
22.JPG
This is the market place where you can buy and sell from other users in the game.
You simply check the price and the Symbol, and when you are comfortable, you press the buy bottom (the cart icon) The seller pays a fee of 5%.

Note: Some users sometimes see SWAP.HIVE as SIM and vice versa - so double check when you place an order.

3.3.2 Buy random card from @dcitycards

23.JPG

When you click on the BUY icon, you will see this.

24.JPG

You can buy random cards with either HIVE or SIM. SIM is the in-game token.
It costs 4 HIVE to purchase 1 random card and 800 SIM to purchase 1 random card.
As at today, it would be cheaper to buy 1 random card with SIM, as 4 HIVE is worth more than 800 SIM.

Once, you press the "BUY" button, you will get a pop up from your Hive Keychain, and you can confirm. At this point it is probably useful to introduce to you the Discord channel of dCity:
https://discord.gg/SAdzYG

If you click on the city-stream section:
26.JPG
You will be able to see what assets you got and what other users got.
Or you can just look at your existing city to see what card you got.

9.JPG

However, when you start building up your city, it becomes easier to check what you got from the Discord Channel.

3.3.3 Buy from other users (Over the counter)

I would not recommend this if you are completely new, as you will need to trust fully in the other counterparty. If you send the funds over and they do not send your the cards, then no one can really help you. You can complain in the Discord channel and warn other users, but that is about it.

There is also a section in the Discord Channel for this, called trading-zone

3.4 How can you earn tokens?

By building up your city, there are really 2 types of rewards:

  • Income from your cards - (SIM)
  • Income from being part of the leaderboard - (HIVE and STEEM)

Income from your cards

27.JPG

So this is my city, I currently get a daily income of 4449 SIM.
Even if I dont do anything, my daily income could change for 2 main reasons:

  • unemployed population: The first blue arrow says that I am losing 560 SIM everyday because of the unemployed population in the city.
  • Robbery: The second blue arrow says that I have just lost 75 SIM from a robbery.

30.JPG

Now lets move on to the second stream of income.

Income from being part of the learderboard

Users with Megacities, defined as the 200 users with the largest cities (in terms of Population), will get a daily income in the form of STEEM and HIVE.

These are the current top 3 users with Megacities. They are Titans that I dont think I will be able to come close unless I have a large capital to throw on this game.
28.JPG

Here is my ranking, I am currently ranked number 16:

29.JPG

So I get 3.394 STEEM and 2.854 HIVE daily

Sometimes, users make use of BEER FEST to boost their popularity which in turn boosts their population which lets them go up the leaderboard a bit. Here is the explanation from the INFO page:

Player can organize events in city, for some extra boosts:
BEER FEST: This event gives you random 50-100 bonus to popularity, and chance(20%) to get Worker(+1 population) or Hard Worker(+1 population, +1 income) card. Last for 24 hours, you can start it every 4 days. Cost: 5 BEER

Hope that at this point, you now have an understanding on how the game works.

Conlusion/Ending remarks

So why did I suggest around 400 Hive (as at today's price) as a starting capital. That is because that is the amount you may need to get a daily SIM income of 800. With the daily income of 800 SIM, you would be able to purchase a random card daily and get a new asset for your city.

However, do whatever you are comfortable with, you may need way less and be okay with daily SIM income of 100 SIM. You may then choose to wait 8 days for it to accumulate to 800 SIM, or you may purchase some asset from the market. (For example, Basic House and Luxury House are now below 800 SIM in the market.

Have I got a return on this game?
NO, I am still quite a far away from breakeven. However, I am not really looking for a return, but more for the fun of building an imaginary city on the blockchain. If you are looking for a quick way to make big profits then this game is probably not for you.

However, if you have some liquid Hive that you are not really using for any necessities (and you have done your research), maybe I will see you as the owner of the next Megacities in the game.

This game looks like something that might catch on and help make Hive "sticky" while growing the user base.

Good writeup, If I ever build up a nice stash of Hive, I might just jump in! :)

No problem. Research and do what is comfortable for you. This game does require some starting capital, but it is interesting once you start.

If you have limited budget, there is currently another game on Hive called Rising Star game, which is free to play at the moment.

This is my referral link:
https://www.risingstargame.com?referrer=apprentice001

It is a relatively simple game, and I have also written posts about it. You basically start off as a nobody and eventually become a super mega star.

Sometimes Homeless and Immigrants have arrived to the city. How this can happen ? It is base on Popularity ? or something else ?

If you look in the INFO section:

Homeless / Immigrants
There is a 2%-50% chance based on popularity to receive Homeless / Immigrants cards:
Homeless: 1 Population -1 Popularity
Immigrants: 2 Population -2 Popularity

Here is also the Discord Channel where you can interact with the community:

https://discord.gg/kGP3kg

Hope this helps.

thank you for explaining this game in detail. It does seem confusing at first, but we learn as the game progresses. I will give it a try for sure and bring my bro @romiferns along too.
