Look Who Got New Toy ~ Dewalt 60volt Chainsaw

avatar

It’s always nice when I swing into the shop to reload my bucket truck with new parts and pieces and see a new toy sitting there with my name on it. A little present if you will. Our purchasing guy must have got a deal on these Dewalt Chainsaws or something. Maybe he felt bad that each of the crews had one but the two Serviceman didn’t? Either way, I have one for my truck and I ain’t giving it back!!

I have had a little experience with this battery operated chainsaw before. When the Dewalt rep came by the shop I happened to be there. I was very impressed with the power and how many cuts you can make. You can really lean into it before it stops the chain. Not to mention the added safety aspect of it being very quiet. No ear plugs needed and when someone wants to get your attention all they have to do is talk... not yell and scream at the top of their lungs.

It’s a little longer than my one-handed Stihl and operatingthw Dewalt one-handed doesn’t sound like a good idea...

The instant power of the electric motor is absolutely awesome!! No more messing with the choke, pulling the chord a 1,000 times to get it to start. Finessing the throttle so it doesn’t die and did I mention the noise??

Well I can’t just get rid of my little one-handed Stihl chainsaw so I need to find a home for my new Dewalt. My Stihl sits in the bottom of a bun with oil and mixed gas among some rigging stuff.

I don’t have time at the moment to reorganize all my stuff to make room for another chainsaw on my bucket truck. I am not sure when I will actually. I am not just gonna put it up in the belly and let it bounce around all over the place. So I pulled out my climbing tools and stood it upright behind them.

Now let’s hope I can remember where I put this when I need to use it. Because I don’t see it in this bin do you??

With a gas powered chainsaw, it’s pretty normal to refill the bar oil when you run out of fuel. Well with an electric saw it doesn’t work like that. The battery lasts a lot longer than the bar oil does. So I guess that is one downfall but I wouldn’t really even call it that. It’s just something you need to pay attention to is all. Equipped with a 3,200 watt inverter on my truck, I can charge batteries like crazy. Having an extra battery would be nice but I guess having the gas chainsaw will do just fine... or my hydraulic pole saw....

I just used my FIL's while back in ND and was so-so about it. It just didn't have the solid feel in the bar and chain that my Stihls do, but I didn't have an hour on it to REALLY say as a solid comparison, only about 15 minutes of limbing. The electric motor is nice but there seemed to be a release when it bit too hard, instead of continuing to power into it. Maybe it is just an old man version compared to the contractor? 😂 The noise aspect is really nice for sure and there is no idling chain to worry about.

As the battery gets low you can definitely tell the difference. But compared to fighting a gas saw to get it started... or having the carb rebuilt... it’s a game changer in my book. It ain’t something for actual loggers but for what I do... I grab it, press the safety, and pull the trigger... no throwing my shoulder out trying to start the damn thing. Lol. That is why I went with an electric Milwaukee weed eater at my house. Just got annoyed of starting that thing everytime. My dad has the Milwaukee chainsaw and he loves it!! Only 18 volt and it does the work of the Dewalt 60 volt... can you say better motor??? Lol.

Not arguing the convenience at all! It is super handy for sure. I have to say my Milwaukee corded hammer drill has been the most rock solid drill for over 20 years now. They are an under rated company!

Their cordless tools they are coming out with now are top notch!! Plus it is just an 18 volt battery. Milwaukee has been stepping up their game big time.

My Dad's Milwaukee Hole Hog and Right angle drill from the 80's still do work!! I am slowly getting all my tools changed to Milwaukee in my garage.

Any chain saw is a good chainsaw I guess, but these little DeWalt jobs are pretty cool!

I grew up with powered chainsaws but got to use one of these a little while back and was very impressed. As you say, you can really lean on the bar before the chain stalls and the longevity of the battery is pretty good. I don't know if it would go all day long, although with a spare battery pack or two you've be in business for a while I reckon. Clearly your inverter takes care of that scenario though.

I'd be confident to recommend one of these for a small-time homesteader or hobby-farmer for sure. I don't have one, no need just yet but I have access to one and am glad to have tried it out as it really surprised the hell ouyt of me.

Well done and good on you purchasing guy.

For around $500 you can get the Milwaukee battery powered chainsaw. To me, it’s well worth it. No noise, no more throwing your shoulder out to start it. Just pick it and pull the trigger. I have a feeling someone special in your life could use one... 😉
