Memories from Yesterday

Yesterday was so busy, too busy to post, but luckily I am getting back into the rythm of snapping photos throughout the day.

It all started with some early morning chemistry,I needed a batch of my homemade wood immunizer to be ready before 8 oclock, when my young helpers arrived.

Incidentally I think this marks one of my first foot selfies.

By heating up the propylene glycol we get the boric acid to dissolve into suspension, this hydroscopic mixture absorbs into the wood and deposits the acidic crystals into it. Local wood treatment products are some of the most toxic group of goops I have ever experienced, so this recipe is becoming a staple for us.

We also needed some brushes and a bucket, but soon we were developing a workflow with the young men.

I suspect there is a business opportunity here buying raw wood to dry and immunize for sale to final customers.

Yesterday the two fellows managed to treat 45 boards with one gallon of the finished product.

Once they got to work repeating our workflow, I headed up to the farm to deliver and retrieve various bits of information and several items, including my trusty laptop with all the dcity alt keys. Watch out Dcity I'm back.

We walked back to town and I suddenly had a fond memory of my father, maybe he will understand why when he sees this picture.

The car deal is done! We are proud owners of a rebuilt Nissan Patrol, a popular car around these parts for its power to move up precarious trails.

We helped a friend move some stuff from one side of town to another, and emptied out mother in laws garage for a place to park it - two for one!

There is a lot about car ownership that I am suddenly rembering.... does the radiator need more water? Where can I store the jack? Does this wire look loose to you?

But those are concerns for another day. Happy Weekend!

Freedom and Friendship

Congrats on the new car!
So what is wood immunizing about? Is it like, a treatment so that if there is any mold/fungus in the wood, it won't rot when you build with it?

The biggest issue here is termites and other bugs, since there is no winter to delay or destroy them its absolutely voracious attacks year round. The boric acid makes it impossible to enjoy their favorite bits, and I think will even kill them if they try.

Rot/fungus can be addressed by some more conventional means, like keeping the wood high and dry. (no oxygen, no humidity or no fungus are the three ways to prevent rot, as it needs all three)

Oh, gotcha! Yeah with the warmer winters, it no longer gets cold enough, long enough here to kill off the pine beetles. You'll see a lot of locally-crafted wood items touting that their wood source was "beetle kill" to tell you that they didn't take down a healthy tree to make the thing, they helpfully removed what is now essentially tinder for wildfires. :(
