La mayor parte de mi infancia transcurrió en una zona boscosa al Oeste de Caracas. En aquel entonces el sitio lucía bastante lejano por lo escaso del transporte. Raras veces íbamos a la ciudad y nuestra vida transcurría entre neblina y trinar de pájaros.

Most of my childhood was spent in a wooded area west of Caracas. At that time the place seemed quite far away because of the scarcity of transportation. We rarely went to the city and our life was spent amidst the fog and the chirping of birds.

Todos los niños del sector nos conocíamos y para ellos la calle era su gran patio de juegos. En mi caso era distinto porque mi madre opinaba que uno debía estar en su casa, así que muchos de mis juegos eran pequeñas invenciones que se ponían de moda entre los muchachos.

All the children in the area knew each other and for them the street was their big playground. In my case it was different because my mother believed that one should be at home, so many of my games were small inventions that became fashionable among the boys.

Aquel carrito se hacía con palillos, un fragmento de vela como de cuatro centímetros y unas bandas elásticas, sí había suerte se sustituía la vela por un carrete de hilo, de madera.

One game that I remember with great affection was to make a kind of cart, very similar to the one that later appeared in the series of the Pica Piedras. That cart was made with sticks, a piece of candle about four centimeters long and some elastic bands; if we were lucky, the candle was replaced by a wooden spool of thread.

La gracia, aparte de construir el carrito, era mirar como avanzaba torpemente y había que tener mucha paciencia para dar con la longitud exacta en los palillos, de otro modo o se trancaba o la liga se desenrollaba muy rápido.

Otro juego que causaba mucha emoción era construir una especie de teléfono con vasos plásticos desechables, hilo y fragmentos de palillos. Another game that caused a lot of excitement was to build a kind of telephone with disposable plastic cups, string and toothpick fragments. In the bottom of the cup a small hole was made, just enough to pass the thread, that thread was attached to a fragment of toothpick, and it was extended through the yards and roofs of the houses, to a place where another child prepared his cup to receive it. There was one indispensable condition for the toy to work: the string had to be very tightly stretched. At a signal, one of the children would talk and the other would listen, and I must confess that many times it was possible to converse. It was much easier to extend the string than to pick it up, and most of the time a new string had to be used.

When the season of each one arrived, my mother would call a group of children to play with my brother and me, so we could enjoy company, which made the recreational activity much more interesting.

En otra oportunidad me regalaron una pista de carros de carrera movidos por batería, era una especie de Scalextric muy sencillo. Como controles solo tenía encendido y apagado y no había control para los carros, pero mi hermano y yo pasábamos largas horas viendo a los carritos dar vueltas por la pista, mi padre nos compraba las baterías por cajas cada vez que iba a la ciudad.

On another occasion I was given a battery-powered race car track, it was a kind of very simple Scalextric. As controls it only had on and off and there was no control for the cars, but my brother and I spent long hours watching the cars go around the track, my father bought the batteries by the box every time he went to the city.

En sus ochenta y cinco años todavía mi madre juega todos los días bingo y dominó con mi hermano menor.

The time of adolescence coincided with my mother's enthusiasm for board games. It was a very nice time where I could feel very strongly the family togetherness. My mother loved ludo and bingo, and almost every afternoon we two older brothers would play with her, making sure that the other two little ones didn't throw the chips on the floor. When my father was in good spirits he would also join in the game, and it was easy for us to get to bedtime without realizing it. In her eighty-five years my mother still plays bingo and dominoes with my younger brother every day.
