Today my story is based on true events. The names of the people were changed to protect their identity. I titled it: Childhood, summer and the ghost ring.

In the year 1966 the González Family, constituted by Mr. Federico, Mrs. Magdalena and their 6 year old daughter Olga, and the Álvarez Family formed by Mrs. Miriam, Mr. Pedro and their 9 year old daughter Mariana decided to move to another city. There it was difficult to find houses to rent, so they decided to live all together in a villa, with a garden and a yard, where the girls could play without any problems.

In the summer, they always went to a famous park half an hour away from the city. It was accessed by a narrow road. There you can find different species of plants and animals; it is also a sanctuary for birdwatchers. It also has streams, waterfalls and crystal clear water wells.

One weekend the two families decided to go to the park and invited some Portuguese friends, Joao, Fatima and Jose. Magdalena and Miriam would make the arrangements. Magdalena asks Miriam:

-What are we bringing for food?- to which Miriam adds:

-Sausages and meat to grill, mashed potatoes, salad, juices for the girls, beers for the men and a dessert that could be a chocolate marquise-, which our guests like very much.-

-Perfect,- says Magdalena.

The agreed day arrives and they all go to the park. They see, along the road, which place would be good for everyone. Suddenly Federico suggests:

-Let's stop for a while at the wells, take a bath and then continue on our way. What do you think, Pedro?-

-Great, so our friends can get to know this extraordinary area,- replies Pedro.

They all bathed in the wells, then continued along the road until they found a suitable place for the barbecue. They got down and settled in. The women would take care of the food and they would play a few games of dominoes. The girls, as usual, played with their dolls.

But the restless Olga and Mariana had had enough of playing and decided to explore the site. They walk off, spotting some mischievous squirrels. At that moment Joao notices them and follows them. On the way they heard and saw a family of monkeys, then some birds unknown to them. And without realizing it, they all walk together, all together, towards the mountain.

The naughty girls got their feet wet in a trickle of water, which they did not know where it came from, and again decided to look further. The mountain was starting to get steeper and no one noticed. They were only interested in seeing where the water was coming from. They all continued up the creek.......

Suddenly Mariana noticed some empty glass bottles in the stream and suddenly shouted:

-Look, a gold wedding ring!- to which Olga asks.

-What is that?-

Joao explains:

-That's a wedding ring.-

-¡Ah!, now I understand,- says Olga, fascinated.

They all see the ring and, as if hypnotized, almost at the same time they put their hands in the water to take it out.
Oh! Oh! Surprise! The ring disappeared as if by magic. Joao proposed to the girls:

-Let's go, each one separately, to look for the ring. The first one to find it, takes it out-.
So they did, but the ring was nowhere to be found. Suddenly Mariana said:

-Look, there it is.-

They all ran to pick it up. ¡Oh!, what a disappointment! The ring had disappeared again. In its place they found the gold-colored cap of a bottle. Again, everyone agreed that they saw the same thing.

They continued walking a little further up and were stunned...... there was an altar with unknown figures, flowers, tobacco, a bridal veil and an empty bottle of liquor. Mr. Joao forbade them to touch or take anything from there.

They ran back. The girls told what had happened to all the adults, but if it were not for Joao, who accompanied them, they would not believe them.

Fatima and Jose, from the description everyone gave them, recognized the figures,- and explained:

  • Those figures are African deities. That was inherited from the slaves they brought from Africa. Thank goodness they didn't touch or bring anything with them!-

The two couples thanked Joao because he took care of the girls at all times.

That is a very interesting anecdote, @katleya. We worried for the children as they followed the elusive golden ring. We worried some mystical spell might befall them. The conclusion was satisfying. The ring came from a shrine built by the descendants of slaves. There is a bit of history here, and mystery. The fact that the story is based on a true event adds interest.

Thank you for posting this story in the Ink Well community.
