Grandfather's house

My parents have decided to sell my grandparents' house, something I don't agree with but the law is clear, when someone dies their children inherit, unless there is a will, and my mother is their only descendant.

In that house, located in the countryside I spent almost all my school vacations, it was a mandatory destination, a ritual that we assumed, even after the death of the grandmother.

It was a sad episode and I was there at the time.

Grandfather woke up early and went to feed the chickens in the back yard, water some fruit trees and vegetables.

Grandma waited for him regularly with coffee and breakfast and that day she did not.

My grandfather called her several times and she did not answer.

With the screams I woke up and went to the grandparents' room.

There they both were, he was crying, it was the only time I saw him do it, and she was asleep.

I didn't understand why my grandfather was crying and I asked him.

-Grandpa, are you in pain?

Surprised by my presence, he got out of bed, hugged me and took me to the kitchen, where he told me.

-Your grandmother is not asleep, she is dead.

Even today in my mind that episode is still present as if it happened yesterday.

There was no human force in the world that would make my grandfather leave that house and visits to the house became more frequent.

He, in spite of his age, was a healthy and strong man.

I was his only granddaughter and he spoiled me to a superlative degree.

I had a huge library with books of all kinds and that was my favorite place in the house.

I didn't spend the time I was there bouncing around in the field, but reading books.

One day I asked him:

-What will they do with your books when you die?

He remained thoughtful and answered me.

-Do you want them?

I was 10 years old and it was like offering me candy.

-Yes.

-Then I'll leave them with you.

And he kept his promise, so now I'm in the house, which smells of beautiful memories.

Sad because it will be sold.

I offered to move into the house to keep it, but they did not accept it.

-Find your books with the libraries that in a few days we will send a moving company to vacate it.

-What about the grandparents' belongings?

-We will donate them to an old people's home.

It didn't seem fair, but there was nothing I could do.

I am in the last year of my college career and I don't have the money to buy it.

The house has been my refuge of escape when I have had to study.

Every time I go out to the courtyard I cry when I see everything desolate.

I have secretly consulted with friends about the possibility of preventing them from selling the house but there is no legal way for that to happen.

Resigned, I pick up the books and put them in the box, slowly, as if my tardiness might delay the end.

I take a book with gray leather covers that was a gift from my grandmother when he was my grandfather's boyfriend and on the first page of it there is a beautiful and poetic dedication and I open it to read it.

Grandpa proudly always read it to me.

I was shocked at what I found.

Folded is a document on sealed paper, one of those used for legal documents.

I open it and my heart almost stops.

It is my grandfather's will and in it he leaves me as the sole heir to his house.

I remember one day he smilingly said to me.

-I will give you a surprise when I die.

What a wonderful story, satisfying to the end. We relate to the child's first experience with the death of a loved one. The relationship with the grandfather is precious. It is the case in many families that grandparents offer particular support to grandchildren, when parents are preoccupied trying to make a way for themselves.

The end is a surprise, and not a surprise. We are not surprised that the grandfather would have the foresight to leave his house to the granddaughter. And, we are not surprised that he would know to leave the will in one of her precious books. However, we are happily surprised to learn that a place with so many memories will be kept in the family.

Thank you for sharing your story with the Ink Well community.

Que linda historia. Al principio no quería leerla porque está en inglés, pero luego, lo abrí con otro navegador e inmediatamente se traduce. Sorpresa, me hubiera perdido una gran historia.

This is wonderful, @joseph1956. I love the narrator's memories and her passion for the property. Those who have felt that way about a house or some special land will understand immediately that feeling. It is like no other. Whether the place brings one peace, or it has really rich memories, that sense of place and belonging are truly special. Great twist at the end!

And I'm glad you're enjoying the 50 story ideas. You did great with prompt #10!

Well, what a surprise!
The house of her childhood is now her's. And there will be no selling for her😁
This is a truly relatable story, houses hold a lot of memories, especially the one we grew up in, so even as an adult these memories make it hard to part from them.
This is a beautiful trip down memory lane @joseph1956 and then return trip to the present. I love it.
