Same Time, Same Place

Bronzed and tall he walked along pebbled beach. The pebbles were uncomfortable under his feet but he carried on. He reached the rock which stood proud at the sea edge. The waves were already lapping around the base and filling the indentations in the wet sand which were filled with strands of shiny seaweed and shells battering against the grey stone. He sat down shifting around until he found the even shelf where he could settle down and look towards the cliff path. He squinted his eyes as the early afternoon sun dazzled him and he looked down. He bent down and with one hand reached into the rock pool, creating a swirl of cloudy sand and waving seaweed fronds. Several small crabs ran over his hand and he quickly drew his hand back. He looked up again and could see a figure at the cliff edge. The figure seemed to be looking his way, but another figure appeared and they walked off together. He felt his back getting hot and he splashed some water from the pool onto his skin and carefully brushed some sand from his thigh. His legs, now under water, felt cool and he watched a brightly coloured fish rest on his toe. He was sure she was going to come. She had said so last year. Same time. Same place. The fish darted away to join the ocean, glistening in the failing summer sun.

This is a lovely micro-fiction piece, @bellou61. You've captured a microcosm of existence in a few words - a person experiencing anticipation and want against a backdrop of rich sea life and the sensory experience of a tide pool. Beautifully done. Thank you for sharing your story in The Ink Well.

Please be sure to provide a source for your image, even if it is your own. Thank you!
