Verlo aparcado en el estacionamiento del liceo era toda una sensación, recuerdo que era rojo con franjas blancas en el capot, pertenecía a la generación setenta, y el profesor de química lo había comprado de agencia.

En los recesos escolares no había otro tema de conversación, todo el mundo hablaba del Mustang del profesor. Aquella belleza relucía en la distancia, era imposible que pasara desapercibida. La tentación de verlo cerca era tan grande que muchas veces hasta los mismos profesores se acercaban en grupo para tener el placer de ver aquellas líneas suaves y aereodinámicas.

During school breaks there was no other topic of conversation, everyone was talking about the teacher's Mustang. That beauty gleamed in the distance, it was impossible for it to go unnoticed. The temptation to see it up close was so great that many times even the teachers themselves approached it as a group to have the pleasure of seeing those smooth, aerodynamic lines.

Me ubiqué en una calle donde era obligatorio que él pasara, allí se empalmaba la salida del liceo con la vía principal. Como sabía que el profesor era muy buena gente, aposté todo a eso… y me valí de un pequeño truco…

My turn came at the end of class on a cloudy, rainy afternoon. I knew that the teacher was one of the last ones to finish his work. Tenía rato esperando, estaba casi empapado por la llovizna. De pronto divisé un destello rojo. Al ver que el profe se acercaba puse mucho cuidado de estar en su ángulo de visión. No perdí tiempo y dejé caer los libros en el asfalto. Tal cómo había calculado el profesor se detuvo, me preguntó si todo andaba bien. Una ligera puntada en la barriga, le comenté. Súbete, me dijo, te llevo cerca de tu casa. No lo podía creer. Me iba a montar en el Mustang, había ganado la apuesta. Ya tendría tema de conversación y echonería por lo menos por el resto del año escolar…

No recuerdo cuando nació mi amor por el carro del caballito, debe haber sido a finales de los sesenta, al ver alguna cuña televisiva o un poster de prensa. Seguramente que me enganchó la asociación entre el carro y el caballo, ya que siempre le he tenido un cariño especial a los caballos. El caso es que el Mustang siempre me llamó la atención.

I don't remember when my love for the horsecar was born, it must have been in the late sixties, when I saw a TV commercial or a newspaper poster. I must have been hooked by the association between the car and the horse, as I have always had a special affection for horses. The fact is that the Mustang always caught my attention.

Por diferentes circunstancias nunca llegué a comprar uno, era frecuente que su precio estuviese un paso más allá de mis posibilidades presupuestarias. Cuando al fin conté con los recursos suficientes ya mi familia había crecido, tenía dos niños pequeños, por lo que me decidí por otro vehículo más espacioso y familiar.

Sin embargo, la pasión por ese carro la heredó mi segundo hijo. Hace algunos doce años se presentó con una sorpresa en mi casa, un Mustang del año sesenta y siete, lo había comprado con los ahorros de su primer trabajo. El carro no estaba muy bien y necesitaba bastante mantenimiento. Poco a poco lo fue recuperando, duró con él como tres años. En todo ese tiempo lo manejé muchas veces, así pude cumplir una fantasía de toda la vida, rodé con el Mustang muchos kilómetros por el asfalto de mi país.
