The griffin is an ancient mythical beast that is associated with Edward III due to the fact that it was part of his private seal. Like the beast, Edward III was known for his strength and courage in building the Kingdom of England into one of the most formidable military powers in all of Europe.

The Queen’s Beasts Collection is a series of ten coins from The Royal Mint, inspired by the ancestral beasts of heraldry, myth and legend that have watched over Her Majesty The Queen throughout her extraordinary reign, from her coronation to her Sapphire Jubilee.

• The Black Bull of Clarence
• The Yale of Beaufort
• The Falcon of the Plantagenets
• The While Lion of Mortimer

This stunning design mirrors the layout of the Lion, with the griffin’s talon grasping the shield and its wings up raised. The coin is exceptionally thick, as the diameter is the same as a one ounce coin. Unusually, both sides were executed by Jody Clark, an engraver at the Royal Mint. His effigy of the Queen is the only fifth to have graced British coins since 1953.The Griffin beast designed by Clark, guards the shield that represents Edward III.
