I dropped a post here, a few days ago, about all the cool looking coins that are associated with Wales, but totally forgot about this little gem....

On the 21st February 1804, the world's first steem steam locomotive made its maiden journey from Merthyr Tydfil to Abercynon.... Where???? Well, Wales of course.

The 2004, £2 coin, marks this occasion by putting a neat little design on the reverse. Built by mining engineer Richard Trevithick and travelled from Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales to Abercynon, the engine called "Pennydarren", was carrying 10 tons of iron, 5 wagons and 70 people on the 9 mile trip. This breakthrough in steam engine design started the growth of railway transport in the 19th Century.
