Let us play "How much does it cost."

avatar

Hello @Spinvest-leo readers. Welcome to our mini-series "How Much Does that Cost?"

In this series we hope to gauge how much different goods and services cost throughout the world. We will cover, the basics, such as food, shelter, and transportation, and we will also delve into some "fun" ones like alcohol, and steak.

At payout we will gather the data, and then chart it up nice and pretty, so you can see how pricing in your town compare to other regions.

Please do participate. The more data we gather, the more interesting this mini-series will be.

We will start with wages.

How much is minimum wage in your region

Here in Chula Vista (Southern California, USA) minimum wage is $12USD per hour.

I did used to know about people who would work for less than that. They would cross the border from Mexico and clean houses, but... covid.

In the comments, please tell us where in the world you are from, how much minimum wage is, and how much time it takes to earn such amount.

After payout, we will gather the data, and compare and contrast.

Thank you in advance for playing along.

minimum wage in germany is 9,30€ (11,07$) per hour, so interestingly it is lower than in the US

That is only lower than California. Each state can set its own rate above the Federal minimum wage which I think is about $8.

So Germany is higher than the Federal level but is likely lower than some states (I think Oregon or Washington approved $15).

Funny enough, i was discussing this matter with @cwow2 who is from Denmark and I from Nigeria. My country claim to have a monthly minimum wage of $77 but the actual minimum wage is $25 a month. Too bad that I earn the minimum wage 😪

$25 per month sounds rough, but maybe when we start reading about how much goods and services cost there, it will level out a bit. Hopefully so.

What types of jobs are available for $25 per month?

Any kind of job I say. Depends mostly on the company you are going to seek job at. Even having a bsc in your course of study does not guarantee you will earn more because high paid jobs are reserved for those with connections.

Even though you have not stepped a foot in the 4 corners of a school before and you have connections, you have gotten the job but with no connections, it only takes the Grace of God.

I live in Mexico, in a state called Morelos. I did some research and the minimum wage is 123.22 pesos, 6.07 dollars. But this is per day, not per hour.

Not sure, I tried researching but couldn't find information. But I think that 8 to 10 hours of work. And also all people that I know earn more than that a day.

Minimum wage is on the rise in California too - in the Bay Area it is as much as $18 in some places.

Minimum wage is around 17 usd in Denmark and this is before taxes. But this also depends on what time of the day you are working. Working nightshifts will earn you more than day shifts.
I worked in 7-11 and our minimum was 19 usd by working day shifts.

In Alaska for 2020 the minimum wage is $10.19, it is adjusted annually for inflation and next year it will be $10.34 on Jan 1, 2021.

This year, the National Minimum Wage (or National Living Wage, as it is known here) is £8.72 per hour for a worker aged 25 or above (there are lower rates for workers between 16 and 24).
Low Pay Commission and the National Living Wage.

Unfortunately, we do have modern slavery in the UK with many vulnerable workers earning less than that. Recent investigations into the garment industry in Leicester found that some workers were receiving as little as £3.50 per hour, there were inadequate health and safety measures and very poor conditions. For example, workers were co-erced into continuing to work through the lockdown.

I am not surprised about the Modern Slavery Bit. Not surprised at all.

The minimum wage in Venezuela, which is my home region, is barely $1, inflation is such that those who work conventionally and the vast majority only get one dollar. This is thanks to the hyperinflation which at this point is the worst in the history of Venezuela.

Don't worry my friend, thanks for this initiative, it's good to know how everyone participates and give their opinions about what is the minimum wage or hourly wage in each region, it's great that information.

That is very interesting.

If person with a spotty work history needed to get a job, what kind of options would they have and how much would they get paid to do it?

Its more ethic then law...

If you dont have a job - you will get money from the gouverment up to a certain amount. You will get so you have money to eat and so...

So if I offer you 1 usd /hour you will say "why would I take it - I get more from be an non-worker".

So - I need to pay my empolyer more than that limit - OR turn to people that really want to have a job because they know that job is the way to get better job and so on.

BUT - low salury is about 10-12 USD in one hour. My wife work as a low-paid-job-without-education and she get 12 USD before tax/hour. And you need to remember that we have 30 % tax. So she gets about 9 USD. Lucky for us - I get more.

Thank you for your response, that was exactly the information I was looking to gather.

We have what we call welfare here too, it covers foodstamps, cash aid, rental assistance and medical, some even get public transportation. There are also job training classes for the people in those situations.

This makes an interesting read. I'm in England and the minimum wage is the same everywhere. So mine's the same as Shanibeer's. I suspect there will be big dfferences when it comes to other prices though.

Are you going to give us some guidance on what to count as breakfast? It could cover any number of things and prices here. From simply toast to a Full English. 😁

Please tell me all abou what a "Full English" is here:

I asked for eggs, milk, bread and bacon but it is obvious by the responses that everyone doesn't get to eat those.

How do you live on minimum wage of 1 USD and still not be able to afford a dozen eggs?

The next one is scheduled already too, we will be asking for shampoo, make sure to keep a lookout for it.

In Venezuela I have a depressing salary. Every day the dollar goes up.
$ 0.57 monthly.
It would be depressing to get it out by the hour.

Oregon has a tiered system based on where you work/live and population density it appears. Also goes up July 1 of each year.

I love it when the official rules are complicated. Here in Chula Vista, if you have less than 50 employees you can pay them 0.50 cents less.

I like more complicated, as long as there is a sound algorithm driving the math. :)

I looked up the federal minimum wage here in the states. It is $7.25 and hasn't been changed since 2009. I guess it has kind of been left to the states to make their own rules.

Somebody told me that minimum wage in Suriname is around $100, which I found absolutely shocking, but then again most people here don't have rent to pay and there is little immigration.

In Cambodia, where we lived before, minimum wage for sweatshop workers is $200 per month, but Cambodia is 5 times cheaper than Suriname. I will say there is a big difference between legal and illegal work in Cambodia. Illegally, there are millions living on $1 to $2 a day. Heck, back in 2010, I took a full-time job in Cambodia for $60 a month, rent for my room was $25, water and electric $7, and I spent the rest on food at the market, it was about the same quality of life I had in the USA living on minimum wage.

That being said, that was my first job in Cambodia a week arrival. Within two years, had already landed a job making nearly $1,000 a month. I never increased my salary twenty-fold in two years living in the USA.

A figure I love to check out when investigating a potential home country is the "Local Purchasing Power," basically comparing the average wage with the cost of goods. !tan !BEER
