The idea of robots has existed for about 1 century. The concept has fasinated humanity in many works of art including plays, novels, movies and TV. The likely first recording of the concept was by Czech writer Karel Capek in his 1920 play called Rossum's Universal Robots.

Today fully automated robotics are a reality. In the simplest form we find robotics in home vacuum cleaners. We also have very complex robotics used in manufacturing, mining and agriculture.

The growing trend is being lead by Swiss technology firm ABB (ABB).

There industrial robot is called YuMi and is designed to work side by side with people.

ABB designs and manufactures the robotics of YuMi (the actual moving parts) while using the leading vision technology supplied by Cognex.

ABB currently has 40 different models customized to different manufacturing challenges such as parts assembly, painting and welding.

Robotics was a necessary evolution of the manufacturing process before Covid-19 and now the trend is more important than ever as it is impossible to socially distance assembly line workers. The lost jobs will be unfortunate (although history shows these workers will find other lines of work) but the workers will have less health risks and the rest of us will enjoy cheaper, higher quality goods.
