Game of Curation!

avatar

About a month ago I was gifted a delegation of 5000 HP by Dada for my 3 years on the blockchain. Along with my own nearly 3k HP, this took me to a pretty decent position to start playing around with the curation game. Needless to say I'm a novice at it and I didn't immediately start utilizing it.

At 100%, my maximum vote value is still only $0.088 and this may not seem very attractive, I blame the price of hive! Probably why I wasn't really trying to "earn"from curation. I just randomly voted and burned my VP down, and then vote some more with the coal!

It was not until about a week later I started noticing curation rewards in my wallet. Not a lot, but up until then, my curation returns used to be like 0.005 HP, 0.01 HP. So when that number starts hitting values like 0.875 HP, 0.921 HP, it gets your attention.

That's when I began to realize the "vote value" that is shown on peakd is only a relative number, that will change constantly with the fluctuating price of HIVE. What really mattered was the Hive Power I was getting in return. In the long run that's what I want, a formidable stake of HIVE.

Now that I saw there was an opportunity to slowly grow my stake, I decided to play around a bit more cautiously and I started to chose my voting times a bit more wisely. I quite like what I see so far.

I didn't do the math, but a rough estimate would be 2 HP everyday. Adds up to 730 HP in a year. If we take compounding into consideration, and factor in the growth of HP from blogging which will boost curation returns, this number will easily be at 1000 HP I understand this is not "a lot," neither is it enough for my "vote value" to take a significant flight. But that's over 25% of my HP (without counting the delegated amount). So I'm pretty happy with that growth but as I said, I'm looking to seriously grow a formidable stake. While keeping enough HIVE liquid for practicing trades and investing into a few other second layer tokens, I have found making 100% powered up posts does give a good spike on the HP chart!

Hence I will be alternating between 50/50 payouts and 100% powered up posts from now on. A rough estimate would be, I need about 3 months for my account to grow by 1000 HP. It would probably a month and a half if I posted daily, but we like quality over quantity :) But up until now I haven't been doing 100% power up posts. That should speed up the process.

So it is pretty clear that blogging is still the better way for me to grow my HP - roughly 4k in a year, but the added 1k is a pretty nice addition too don't you think!

I have been asked at what HP one can start curating for returns that are worth the effort. I do not know. I wouldn't even had considered the curation part had I not received the delegation. But judging from the numbers I am looking at I'll take a wild guess and say 5k is a good place to start. But it depends on perspective, what sort of return is "worth it" to you, only you can answer. So play around with it, it's fun!

HIVE price has a high probability to improve.

Yes we are all expecting that to happen. The movement has been slow, but hopefully the patience will be worth it in the long term ;)

Nice to see the progress you are making @simplifylife. Your post touches on a key aspect of one option for how we may choose to work to maximize the ROI on our investment into our Hive blockchain.

"... that will change constantly with the fluctuating price of HIVE. What really mattered was the Hive Power I was getting in return. In the long run that's what I want, a formidable stake of HIVE."

"Now that I saw there was an opportunity to slowly grow my stake, I decided to play around a bit more cautiously and I started to chose my voting times a bit more wisely."

Timing of voting ... A sore topic with this Hive blogger, as those who can code to take advantage put the rest of us at a disadvantage, but ...

Part of the "game" I suppose! At least for now, it is just the way it is.

All the best to you, in your "journey" of continued discovery!

Hey @roleerob, thanks for stopping by and sorry for getting back to you so late.

I agree about the timing of votes being a big factor on the curation return. I myself am not a big fan of this method the curation curve, but it is what it is for now. I do hope there is a more acceptable solution sooner than later, where manual curation will be as effective because that's what takes effort.

Although I must admit I don't fully understand the mechanics and why the timing of the votes has been made important.

Yes @simplifylife ...

"I do hope there is a more acceptable solution sooner than later ..."

... agreed! I commented on the recent post of BlockTrades on this very topic and was surprised to get a sympathetic and somewhat supportive response from Dan.

Coders "control" a lot of what happens "in here" and it really comes down IMHO to how many of them are prepared to get out of their own way. That is, losing perhaps a bit of their own rewards in support of them becoming more widely distributed. Human nature, in all of its uhhh ... "glory" ...

Once HF24 is behind us, we'll see if this topic has enough support to result in the EIP changing for HF25!
