About Coins, US Constitutional Coins

It is important for me to learn the lingo and terms used around coins because it will be helpful in accurately describing coins and have a better understanding of coins in a more meaningful way.

Aside from books, much of today’s information on anything can be found on the worldwide web. This is from the Gainesville coin dealer website and an excellent illustration of the anatomy of a coin.

I found this to be very helpful in identifying the different “parts” of a coin.

The articles I produce on precious metals essentially describe how I stack and my thoughts on precious metals stacking and were written for myself, more than anything, as a reminder to stay the course.

Firstly, there is no such thing as one single way to stack precious metals. The rule of thumb is: buy only what you like! Also, it is the person's financial ability and goals that should determine how one accumulates his/her stack.

I personally started building the foundation of my stack with TWO types of silver bullion: American Silver Eagles and U.S. Constitutional Silver.

WHAT IS CONSTITUTIONAL SILVER?

Constitutional Silver is simply US coins (dimes, quarters, halves, dollars) minted before 1965. Up until that point coins made for US currency followed the Constitutional mandate and were minted containing 90% silver.

US Constitutional silver is sometimes called "junk silver".

Junk silver is an informal term used in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia for any silver coin which is in fair or cull condition and has no numismatic or collectible value above the bullion value of the silver it contains. The word "junk" refers only to the value of the coins as collectibles and not to the actual condition of the coins; junk silver is not necessarily scrap silver.

U.S. Constitutional Coins:

The photos I used in this article were taken by a good stacker friend of his latest bulk pickup. He has a YouTube channel and on IG and goes by the handle name coin_sense_and_nonsense

.

When I saw these photos, my resolve was once again made stronger to keep my course in building up the foundation of my stack of U.S. silver coins and fractional gold.

As it did for me, I am sharing these photos with the hope that you too will be inspired and motivated to STACK ON!!!

The photos in these articles are being used with the expressed permission by my friend.

A BIG THANKS TO coin_sense_and_nonsense.

Now you know... very good!
Should you be lucky and come across them in your daily life, keep them.
But if you prefer, you can get them from your local coin shop (LCS), @jfang003.

I am always on the lookout to add to my junk silver stack. Right now my stack of "Constitutional Silver" is small. Well.. Smaller than I would want it to be, so I have been focused on building that lately. For a long time (years) I focused on collecting gold jewelry, at 40-80% of it's spot value. I would hit up thrift stores, yard sales and the like.. I accumulated enough I think LOL. I forgot about junk silver and silver in general. I am now trying to refocus and readjust that goal. we'll see. lol

Good informative article though! Love the coin guide and I even learned something. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to coins, so I rely on reading... lots and lots of reading! 😆

Hehehe... I am learning as well!
For fractional silver, my go-to is US Constitutional silver.
So I've accumulated quite a bit.
I've been sorting them according to type, so I have a bag of each ongoing.
1964 JFKs are mostly BUs since they are easier to find.
But my favorite are the Walkers.

I see a lot of walkers here and there, but am always thinking I am paying too much for them. My cut off is $11.50 give or take. On occasion.. a RARE occasion.. I can pick one up near spot, like $10.25/10.50. For junk ones.. some of them the dates are barely legible.

Ah... that is one personal requirement, that the dates be legible!
But nevertheless, it's silver!

The more I pay the more my "requirements" come into play, otherwise .. like you say .. it's silver nevertheless.
