1953 South Africa 5 Shillings Coin

From nothing to something

Just a few years ago, I had zero in savings. Nothing. I had debt. Silver played a huge role in my becoming fiscally responsible.

I could have continued to live my life the way it was and burning every penny, and you know that I would have zero today.

Instead what I have today is a beautiful stack and I'm very proud of it. The "value" may fluctuate up or down, but it is still there... I haven't lost an ounce.

Ever wondered why the Springbok?

The springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) is a medium-sized antelope found mainly in southern and southwestern Africa. The sole member of the genus Antidorcas, this bovid was first described by the German zoologist Eberhard August Wilhelm von Zimmermann in 1780. Three subspecies are identified. A slender, long-legged antelope, the springbok reaches 71 to 86 cm (28 to 34 in) at the shoulder and weighs between 27 and 42 kg (60 and 93 lb). Both sexes have a pair of black, 35-to-50 cm (14-to-20 in) long horns that curve backward. The springbok is characterized by a white face, a dark stripe running from the eyes to the mouth, a light-brown coat marked by a reddish-brown stripe that runs from the upper fore leg to the buttocks across the flanks like the Thomson's gazelle, and a white rump flap.

Active mainly at dawn and dusk, springbok from harems (mixed-sex herds). In earlier times, the springbok of the Kalahari desert and the Karoo migrated in large numbers across the countryside, a practice known as trekbokking. A feature, peculiar but not unique, to the springbok is pronking, in which the springbok performs multiple leaps into the air, up to 2 m (6.6 ft) above the ground, in a stiff-legged posture, with the back bowed and the white flap lifted. Primarily a browser, the springbok feeds on shrubs and succulents; this antelope can live without drinking water for years, meeting its requirements through eating succulent vegetation.

Springbok inhabit the dry areas of south and southwestern Africa. The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources classifies the springbok as a least concern species. No major threats to the long-term survival of the species are known; the springbok, in fact, is one of the few antelope species considered to have an expanding population. They are popular game animals, and are valued for their meat and skin. The springbok is the national animal of South Africa.

I am guessing the design didn't change from 1951 to 1953.

Also thanks for the information about the Springbok. I didn't realize it was the national animal of South Africa.

Hehehe... I did it for you!
No, the Springbok spanned from 1947 to 1951 and then and 1953 to 1959 and 1961!
I am collecting all of them, but it takes time.
And the reason I am collecting them is that the Springbok is in now in the Silver Krugerrand that started 2017.
I have all the SIlver Krugerrands!
I appreciate you @jfang003!

You know what I with this lock down just gone I had a similar issue, I was running on fiat but I had some crypto which came to the rescue. I don't wish to go near my stack until I am old and grey. I am glad your stack is thriving, I hope it does as well as your green beans.b

Yes, they will always have value, unlike stock and crypto which may be lost totally in oblivion.
It is good to have 10% or so of your total portfolio in gold and silver, @silvertop 😀.

A very nice addition to your stack!

What an amazing animal! To be able to live without water for years just by eating succulent plants. Even with that, I am surprised they don't need any additional water to get by.

Thanks for sharing both the silver and information about the springbok.🌸😘🤗💕

Unfortunately, these are my only Springbok coins. The Springbok spanned from 1947 to 1951 and then and 1953 to 1959 and 1961 in large crown-size. I have a long way to go. Eight more coins. I started to collect them when the silver Kruggerand came out. And I have all of the Silver Krugerrand. Thanks for being with me in my journey!

Hugs and Kisses sis 🥰🌺🤙!!

There's nothing like feeling the weight of real tangible savings made into beautiful coins like this motivates me to save not just for myself but also leave for my children a legacy or financial foundation. It gives me the opportunity to teach them financial history and fiscal responsibility to pass on to their children.
The Chinese are forward thinking this way planning for succeeding generations and it excites me to think that I made a difference. I just make sure I leave a will, a map, GPS coordinates, metal detector and a shovel.😉

Always, with love 🤗 🌺 💖

You are a fantastic Mama... a stacking mama!
You are leaving a legacy!
You are so into the Asian culture! It is great that you find them forward-thinking about succeeding generations.

I think that in all cultures, there are some that are concerned about what to leave their children and there are some who just don't care. It's alarming though that in America, revolving debt has increased by 4.7% in Sep 2020.

We can only do what we can.

Hugs and Kisses sis 🥰🌺🤙!!!

Lately my nephews we're interested in buying into Bitcoin and after a little thought, i decided to give them each 1000 Dogecoin to see if they have the acumen or talent for trading. And that solved the Birthday & Christmas gift problem this year (They were originally expecting another Silver coin)

In Canada it's pretty bad that the average consumer debt burden is 175% of disposable income in 2020, and its gonna be far worse in 2021. I get the feeling StatsCan is down playing the National Macroeconomic figures too.
