AS Roma (ITALY)

THE STORY BEHIND AS ROMA

AS Roma was formed back in the spring of 1927 when Italo Fosch initiated the merger of three older Italian Football Championship clubs from the city of Rome which was

Roman FC
SS Alba-Audace
Fortitudo-Pro Roma SGS

The purpose of this merger was to give the Italian capital of Rome to be a strong rival that of the more dominant Northern Italian clubs of the time. After high key players which left the club during there slumped form on the pitch, Roma managed to rebuild their squad quickly whiched allowed them to score goals from the likes of Argentine Enrique Guaita. Since their form returned they pushed so hard that they had won there 1st ever league title of 1941-42.

After the years of WW2 which had ended, Roma where unable to recapture the league stature from the early 40's and their form started to slip down the table which evantually was regelated to Serie B at the end of 1950-51, after a decade in Tier 2 they mnanaged to ge themselves promoted to Serie A under a new manager called Giuseppe Viani.

After Returning to the top flight they were unable to finish in the top 4 but however despite it happening, they managed to pick up some trophies along the way such as Inter-Cities Fairs Cup 1960-61, Coppa Italia 1963-64 & also winning there 2nd Scudetto in 1983 after 41 years of waiting

And when AS Roma needed a player to help them and that person is Francisco Totti which became their captain.

During the beginning of 2000 there form returned whiched allowed them to pick up the 3rd Serie A title in 2000-2001 with the likes of many talents of Aldair, Cafu, Gabriel Batistuta and Vincenzo Montella

However in November 2003 €37.5 million was injected by "Roma 2000" to cover the half-year loss and loss carried from previous year and then on the 30th June for €44.57 million even though that the stock market had a further €19.850 million of new shares issued, and at the year end, the share capital was €19.878 million, which was therefore unchanged as of 2011. The following season also saw the departure of Walter Samuel for €25 million and Emerson for €28 million, whiched has decreased the strength of the squad. The Giallorossi therefore finished in eighth place, one of the worst of recent seasons they have recorded.

But then in 9th July 2006 the whole complexion changed, it started when Roma's Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi and Simone Perrotta helped Italy to the Fifa World Cup 2006 the major Scandal occured which Roma were not affected in anyway.

After the punishments in italy where finaliised they were crowned runner's up 2005-2006 & couple of years later winning the Coppa Italia in 2007-08.

During the 09-10 era, Claudio Ranieri stepped in the ring despite the AS Roma which layed bottom in Serie A after losses to the likes Juventus and Genoa. Despite this setback, Roma would later embark on an incredible unbeaten streak of 24 matches in the league – with the last of the 24 being a 2–1 win over rivals Lazio, whereby Roma came from 1–0 down at half-time to defeat their city rivals after Ranieri courageously substituted both Totti and De Rossi at the interval, but however they managed to finish runner's up which is calling a biggest comeback in history.

During that time they picked up more trophies than ever calling Roma their biggest gratest decade of all time.

In the summer of 2010, the Sensi family agreed to relinquish their control of Roma as part of a debt-settlement agreement, Which had brought it to an end of control over AS Roma, but he wanted to continue her directorial role of the club.

On 16 April 2011, the takeover contract was closed with an American investment group led by Thomas R. DiBenedetto, with James Pallotta, Michael Ruane and Richard D'Amore as partners. DiBenedetto became the 22nd president of the club, serving from 27 September 2011 to 27 August 2012 and was succeeded by Pallotta. The new onwers group called NEEP Roma Holding, was 60% owned by American's "AS Roma SPV, LLC" and the rest (40%) was retained by the creditor of Sensi, UniCredit. and then in turn, NEEP owned all shares held previously by Sensi (about 67%) with the rest free float in the stock market. UniCredit later disinvested NEEP Roma Holding to sell to "AS Roma SPV, LLC" and Pallotta.

Then the ownership began it's work on re-modernising the club by bring in Walter Sabatini as director of football and former Spanish international and Barcelona B coach Luis Enrique as manager. The first high-profile player signings from the duo were attacking midfielder Erik Lamela from River Plate, forward Bojan from Barcelona, goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg from Ajax and defender Gabriel Heinze. The club also sold and released defender John Arne Riise, goalkeeper Doni and forwards Jérémy Ménez and Mirko Vučinić. At the financial level, the company had recapitalised for more than €100 million, the last recapitalisation occurring in the early 2000s.

During the 2010 era they had sold some of there best players such as, Miralem Pjanić & Mohammed Salah & Allison in order to keep them afloat.

but in return they had bought Shick, Nzonzi, Pastore, Kluivert, Defrel and more, while selling their 2 starting midfielders from the previous season, Nainggolan and Strootman.

And Finally during COVID-19 pandemic AS Roma SPV LLC was in final negotiations to sell the team for $872 million, to American businessman Dan Friedkin as it was agreed on 6 August 2020.
