How We Buy the "Big Pancake" in China

I often get asked, “How do you buy bitcoin in China? Isn’t it banned there?”

Aside from the obvious falseness of this statement - there have been court decisions declaring crypto as private property & President Xi gave a speech last October where nearly 10% of the words in it was just the word "blockchain" (qukuailian 区块链) - China is also a notorious spot for gray markets. There’s a long tradition of it going back to at least 1999 when I first came to China and spent my lunch money on “dollar DVDs.”

Now the mystery can be revealed thanks to pics like this that are now gathering steam on Chinese social media.

That right there is how we buy our crypto in China. No Coinbase. No Gemini. Just go up to a crew on the street and look for a sign like that, which losts the following tasty items for your consumption.

Big Pancake - dabing 大饼 - Bitcoin (BTC)
Concubine - yitai 姨太 - Ethereum (ETH)
Crown Prince - taizi 太子 - Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
Pomelo - youzi 柚子 - EOS (EOS)
Spicy Doughstick - latiao 辣条 - Litecoin (LTC)

It's as simple as that! It’s just like ordering from a fast food menu. Just give ‘em the appropriate address, scan the QR code, and off you go... Off into the wild world of cryptocurrency.

That’s China for ya. Always trying to figure out the best way to provide customer service.

To the Moon! 😜
