# 932 - Canadian Wildlife - Part 29

Today we will continue the series called "Canadian Wildlife".

The Royal Canadian Mint is known by its high quality work and the enormous number of commemorative coins issued each year. Among these commemoratives we find many, individual or in series, under the theme "wildlife".

Canada, with its vast lands and seas, is the home of a varied fauna and that will be showed in this series.

I will try to post land animals, sea animals and birds, in that order.

The twenty-eighth is a 2004 CAD $5 "Arctic Fox".

In 2004 the Royal Canadian Mint issued a set of four coins featuring wildlife designs that were originally created for platinum proof coins. It showed the "Arctic Fox" in four different sizes. This is the first.

It weights 31.1g with silver purity of 99.9% and Proof finish, with Frosted relief against a mirror background. The mintage was 14,566 units. The issue price of the set was CAD $89.95.

The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), also known as the white fox, polar fox, or snow fox, is a small fox native to the Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere and common throughout the Arctic tundra biome. It is well adapted to living in cold environments, and is best known for its thick, warm fur that is also used as camouflage.

Designed by Canadian artist Claude D'Angelo, the reverse features a mother fox with three cubs. Their furs will become white, as their mother, in a near future.

I don't know what happened with the photo. The coin shows a white mother and black cubs, but my phone disagrees...All the photos I took are similar to the one below. Very strange!

Baby foxes! Cute and low mintage always make for a HOT seller and I'm sure you got this well below Issue price. 😉

Nice coin @ronavel! Interesting about the color reversal. It's almost like a reverse negative. Thanks for sharing.
