# 842 - Modern Commemoratives Half Dollars - Part 6
Today we will continue the series "The Modern American Commemorative Half Dollars".

"The United States Modern Commemorative Coin program began in 1982. That year, the US Mint released commemorative half dollar coins to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of George Washington. Since that date, commemorative coins have been issued nearly every year to celebrate famous American people, places, events, and institutions.
Each commemorative coin program is authorized under an Act of Congress. The Act typically specifies the subject to be commemorated, the denomination of coins to be issued, and the maximum authorized mintage for each. Additionally, most commemorative coin programs include surcharges added to the cost of each coin, which will be distributed to specified beneficiary organizations or fund projects that benefit the community."
All coins weight 11.34 g with 91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel. They were issued in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof finish.
They will be presented in the order they were minted, but only one of each design.
The sixth is the PR70 DCAM 1992-S "Columbus".
"The 1992 Columbus Half Dollar was issued to mark the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. This coin was part of a program that also included silver dollars and gold coins."
PCGS graded 3,406 1992-S "Columbus", with 238 as PR70 DCAM. 390,154 1992-S "Columbus" were minted in San Francisco.
I bought this coin in 2013 for $59.12 and today's price is around $100.00. The issue price was $9.50.
The obverse design of the half dollar features a depiction of Christopher Columbus at landfall. Shown in the background is the Santa Maria and a smaller ship with the crew disembarking.
Both the obverse and reverse were designed by T. James Ferrell.
Pictured on the reverse of the coin are the thee ships of Columbus’ voyage under sail, known as the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria.

Very detailed reverse of this coin @ronavel! The look of the Santa Maria under full sail, and Christopher Columbus standing on the shore is very impressive! Thanks my friend for sharing your collection with us all, I look forward to it every day!
I think this is one of the most beautiful coins that I have. Most of all, it has ships on both sides...

I like the old tall sailing ships. We have one here on Bellingham Bay called the Zodiac. Not quite as big as the Mayflower, lol! She was originally owned by the Johnson & Johnson heirs, but sold to private hands, and you can experience a dinner cruise on the bay. We've never gone, but maybe someday! Awesome coin!
