AUTO VOTER DISABLED! Going to try manual voting on LEO for a month!

avatar

Like many curators on leofinance I've been regularly auto-voting a few big earners with 50-100% weighting at 0 minutes, and making a pretty nice 30% curation return on my nearly 20K (what was over 20K before the WLEO fiasco) stake for the past months since I set up this alt account with all the LEO staked to it.

image.png

But now we've got the flat curation curve, I don't need to play this rather silly front-running game anymore, so I've decided to switch off my AV. I might still vote all of the accounts I had on AV, but now it doesn't matter what time i vote them.

Feels good to get rid of the AV. I mean there are some people I've been AVing just for the curation returns who I think earn plenty enough already, now I'm looking forward to rebalancing my vote a little.

I may earn a little less in curation, but I'll see how this goes for a month and how it affects my earnings!

My intuition tells me I'll probably earn a VERY similar amount to what I've been earning through auto-voting!

Oh, and I'm also going to try and actually read more stuff on leo, so feed me the good stuff and I'll give you a nice upvote, manual upvote!.

Oh, AND COME ON HIVE, CATCH UP!

I’m excited to see where the manual curation takes us. There’s a lot of great content here and great creators. Some definitely earn too high rewards on every post simply because of autovoters.

This may be one of the greatest low hanging fruits to pick in terms of flipping the tables on curation. It doesn’t fix everything but if we can imagine that there are 20-50 stakeholders like you who switch from AV to manual, then I don’t think it’s a big leap to say that the distribution of rewards is going to look drastically different.

I’ve already noticed some changes in the trending content feed. 🚀

It's the way it should be, and I don't think it takes too long to read and vote on 10-20 posts a day!

And as much as I love trumpman, I really don't want to be gifting him 1.5 LEO for his latest shitpost about whatever beer he's brewed on CryptoBrewMaster!

Haha

Yeah it really doesn’t take long and I guess a stake in LEO should also mean that you have some level of interest in crypto news. Soon, we’re launching a better feed which will extend the curated content list. So people who are feeling extra lazy on one day could always hop in there and upvote some posts that they know have already been curated for quality.

Imo it will also become a great source for reading content in general. Filtered content by subject + curated for quality. Will be interesting when that launches in a few weeks :)

That’s awesome I like the idea of manual voting more that auto. I see the convenience of auto but then it means the wealth is always going to the same people. I see some people get huge post payouts on all their lost because it’s all auto. They have great content but does every post need to get rewarded the same- probably not. I think this is actual detrimental to the platform because new people think that they can’t get these votes because it’s the same people always voting each other’s stuff.

I 100% agree, I think it's worse than you say.

Shitposts (and shill posts which I largely put in the same category) getting 100 LEO rewards is an insult to any serious content creator who isn't on AV and getting 20-30 LEO.

Flattening the curve is defo a step to help correct this!

It a tough situation because I know some of the OGs support each other which is great and all, but a post that takes 5 mins getting a 100 Leo where you have e newer users making very detailed and in-depth post not even breaking a few Leo is a quick way for people give up posting. I know I've been there many a times as I can't seem to get consistent results.

I've been enjoying manually curating again. I've been so disconnected from Hive since I began using auto voting that my only actions on the blockchain are my gaming actions.

I've got a few people I interact with on a fairly regular basis, which is nice, I still always check my feed every morning!

It does feel good to be back to manual.

I quite enjoy the combination of gaming and writing about gaming, especially Splinterlands, but also CBM and Exode, which is about to kick off!

Works for me!

It's a pretty smart move. Curation is a lovely game and 30% is pretty decent when your av was on but then I'd like to see the stats after one week of manually curating

Manual is the way it's supposed to be. I actually think (and hope) that manual curation will result in more engagement too. It's hard to beat auto-voting obviously, but manual curation can and will yield great results. I am positive!

What the flat curation reward means is that it won't make any difference financially whether one auto-votes or votes manually. What is lost by the manual voter is only time, unless one considers the time spent reading the posts time spent well enough from a non-financial standpoint.

True. The reason for me to believe (or hope) that it will bring more engagement is simply because I personally know a few Hivers (Steemians) who stopped spending time because auto-voting were unbeatable. With this change, now that the playing field is levelled, I think it's a good chance for inactive users to come back again.

Best of luck. Always feels different to manually curate and engage. Wish I had more time and obviously more HP to do it more often

Be careful. There are many creative authors and posts you will want to vote on. Might completely drain your voting power!

Just kidding, unleash and enjoy your power, lion!

Congratulations on a wise decision.

But why do you think you will earn "little less in curation" ?
Be it AV or manual - rewards will be the same. Just your personal influence will be shared wore wisely, according to your personal preferences. Which is better for community as well, I think

I was thinking about less than front running, but of course you're right, now whoever I vote for I guess I just earn the same.

I'll probably be voting a few more comments too, which I enjoy doing! Although I've just realised I've been upvoting comments here with my my HP account not my LP account!

Definitely better for the platform and the community this curation switch!

Wait, there's a manual option? 😜

I do follow some curation trails that I know have manual curation at their core but I just delegate or lease out my HP to those accounts for the most part anyway. So my actual upvote when it does come to it manually is effectively a Facebook like 😂 I've cracked it mate, no more vote dramas here!

Enjoy the manual ride for the next month!

It's a great thing about Hive that you can just follow trails that manually curate!

Not my thing, but I'm glad there's the option, and I know you can get a decent return too!

I quite like the idea of going manual!

I've been using autovote as a kind of notification service: I don't follow a lot of people, especially if they write about a lot of topics and I'm more or less only interested in one of them. What use is a feed if it shows you too many posts to vote? Putting an autovote for posts by author X with tag Y makes me notice posts I'm interested in ;)

Is it possible to autovote on only certain tags>?

I'm guess not, as that's why so many of us have .leo .spt etc. accounts!

I'm using @holger80's Rewarding.app - you can make rules where you vote an author's post when certain tags are used (or vote every post of an author except those with tag X) or only vote posts with more than Z words.

And it's a great way to keep your VP from running over: when VP reaches 99% I follow a voting trail :)

Oh OK I didn't know it was so involved, I might have to check that out for Hive!

I'm keeping my AV switched on there!

Good to hear you've made the switch.

I like that this reward curve change means you just don't have to autovote to maximise rewards.

It doesn't actually de-incentivise autovoting if you don't have the time to manually curate.

Now it just means the more stake you have, the more curation reward I guess!

I don't find it takes that long to manually vote, then again I've only just started.

I certainly wouldn't be able to do it across two accounts!

Very nice to know that we won another hand curator. You are a key part of the LEO ecosystem. Perhaps the gains are not the same with AV but I'm sure it will be enough to almost match.

Hey cheers, not sure if I'm that 'key' but I do try to not abuse the leo tag at least!

Cheers!

I really hope that Hive changes to a flat curation curve as well, just seems more fair and at the same time encourages people to actually read the content they upvote.

I think it's only a matter of time, although I also doubt if it would change too much - a lot of the larger accounts who AV do so with tiny weightings and they're unlikely to vote 100 times a day!

You're right on the big accounts, but I don't care too much about them in this case. Right now, my articles fetch between 300 and 500 upvotes, and I'd guess about 95%+ are coming from autovotes, mostly because of smaller accounts following curation trails.

Even if only a small portion of these smaller accounts would stop to auto vote and instead switch to actually reading what they vote on, that would be a huge win already. I love the idea behind Hive, but as of now we are all publishers and no readers. This won't change over night, but we need to start somewhere.
