Introduction

Taskmaster talked about the idea of digital scalability and tokenization of work. What I'm going to talk about is the digital scalability of work and what it means for the viability of careers that have traditionally been considered good career choices.

Digital scalability means the ease of replication of the results of work

When a job is digitally scalable it means that it is easy for a large number of people to make use of work done. A good example of that is a star lecturer whose lectures can be recorded and posted online to be viewed millions of times. The work of musicians, actors and other performers has been replicable for a long time. The result of that is the rise of global superstars. This is why the performing arts or professional sports are prime examples of professions in which the distribution of income is extremely top heavy.

Massive consequences for society

The more professions become subject to digital scalability, the worse the structural unemployment crisis will become. What this means is that there will be serious societal and political unrest until some sort of income transfer system will be put in place to make sure the majority of the population will not end up in the streets.

I know that will not sit well with anyone politically on the right, be they libertarian or conservative. But what would you suggest? Despite the fact that digital scalability will cause consumer prices to drop precipitously, a lack of earned income will cause purchasing power to drop even faster in most cases.

Web 3.0 to the rescue?

Everyone getting active on Hive or other platforms like it would solve the problem? While I'm sure it will help because in the growth stage of Hive's development that we're in, much of the money flowing into the ecosystem is speculative and the result of swing trading against BTC. But suppose Hive or other platforms like it have billions of people onboard. Where is the money allowing most people to make a living going to come from?

Conclusion

Most jobs becoming digitally scalable or subject to being automated will force massive changes in our fundamental beliefs and moral intuitions to take place. The whole idea of the necessity of working for a living belongs to the age of scarcity mankind is about to leave behind. The details of the arrangements we will have to make to provide the majority of the population for a decent living are still subject to debate that has barely even begun. But one thing is certain, our current ways of thinking will prove to be hopelessly obsolete going forward.
