New Wirex Mastercard .:. Short, Honest Review

avatar

The new Wirex card has arrived! I was thinking of creating an unboxing video, but there wasn't too much to "unbox", so I will do it in the written post manner, adding a couple of photos of the card itself.

This is my second card from the Wirex company as I had the old one for over 2-3 years (activated in May 2018). As we were in the bear market almost all the time, I didn't use it too many times, but still, I did it 50-100 times probably... It worked flawlessly every time, except the gasoline stations because of their weird rules of "locking" more funds than needed, but that's not the card problem but my problem that I didn't have enough funds on the card...

The old VISA card worked like many others in that time... You had to convert your crypto into fiat and transfer to the "card wallet" and that's it... There were rewards for using the card in the "Cryptoback" program where the users got some % in Satoshis back to the account... One of the problems was the monthly fee that you had to pay regardless of using, or not using the card... In general, it worked well, and I was a satisfied customer...

pg divider203.png

The thing that I didn't like, and still don't like, is the customer support... Of course, they have a KYC policy and that's not a problem if you are OK with that... The problem is that every now and then, they have randomly asked me to confirm my current address or re-send my ID documents... Just to clarify, my previous documents didn't expire or they didn't have any problem... So, it was just a bit annoying to re-send these things every couple of months...

The other problem with customer support is that they reply on tickets VERY SLOW, or don't even reply... I had a problem with my physical address not showing properly in my member panel, and my ticket was constantly closed by automatic responses... It's almost impossible to get some "human being" on the other side in the support desk... Unfortunately, most of the tech companies have that problem which can be very annoying and can pull off some clients...

Back to the new card... Wirex has started with issuing new cards just a month (or so) ago... It is a Mastercard and it has an interesting design, a bit unusual, but innovative... On the front side of the card, there are no personal details at all (as you can see from the photo), and all important details are placed on the backside (name, card number, expiration...).

The main difference between the old card and the new one is how it works (before the payment)... As I said earlier, the old one needed funds in FIAT money pre-exchanged before use... The new one doesn't need that! You have a special part as a "Card wallet" where you can link your separate crypto wallets (from your member area)... In order how you link them, your funds will be automatically changed to local currency at the moment of the purchase at current rates! So, there is no need of exchanging funds before the use (you can do that if you want and link FIAT wallet) so it comes very handily if you don't want to exchange your precious crypto :)

As I said before, support was bad (in my opinion), and finding some simple things on the website can be confusing... For example, I wanted to share more details about the current fee schedule for the card and I had to search for a couple of minutes to find them... Written by small letters and hidden in T&C page... When I was ordering the new card, there was literally ZERO details about the fees... The only thing that was promoting that there are no fees... Actually, there are, if you pick some of the plans where you can get some additional bonuses... To spare you losing time searching it, you can check this plan table with fees...

Before ordering the card, I would suggest you check if it is supported in your country... That's another thing that I couldn't find on the website, so you will have to DYOR...

So, in conclusion, my old card was working fine, so I suppose that it will be the same case with the new one... It's nice to have an option to spend your crypto directly in bars, stores, etc... The only bad experience was the customer support, but maybe you will not need it so no worries... ;)

Got my new Wirex card last week as well, been using them for almost 4 years now. I tihnk this is the 3rd one i've had from them. They 1st one get cancelled because of the whole visa crypto thing in Jan 2018, then i got my second one a few months later and then my recent one last week.

The 2 cards they released after the first one have both seen nice improvements. 1st card was like a prepaid debit card, no contactless.

2nd cards had contactless and way better design. I like the details on the backs, nice touch and then this newest card, we can spend BTC directly i think which is awesome. Cant see how they can improve on this.

Do hundreds of online transactions with it and withdrawn decent amounts to the bank using it also. For £1 per month in service fees, it's a bargain.

Great review.,

It looks that they had different fees before... In Spain, it was 2.5 EUR per month, and as I didn't use it too many times, it was a bit stupid to pay that... But, the truth is that there weren't other cards at the market... So, I had to do it and have at least one card for "just in case"...

Now, the competition is too strong so they have to play the "no-fees" card and that's finally something good for us, end-users... ;)

Thanks for the comment!

Ty for writing this and making things clear.
I'll look into how it functions for Europe tomorrow and what I need to do.

I appreciate this so much! Ty for taking the time to write it, @ph1102!

I'm in Spain and the old one worked well... This has arrived yesterday and I didn't have time to test it, but I'm sure it works...
Btw. I have a Binance card also, and it works very similarly to this new Wirex card... Using it for some time without any problems... ;)

Cheers! Thanks for the comment!

Ty, @ph1102
I'll look for more insight about getting it tomorrow. I'm glad I stood up more tonight so I could notice your article. I always like practical ones like this.
Good night!

I would have liked to read if there were any traps in the fine print of the card agreement.

You have a T&C link inside the post and you can check it... In the past, I know that they didn't have that "fair" conversion rates for crypto-fiat exchange... So, I suppose that they earned some profits on that... And it's probably like that with the new system, too...

But, tbh, they have to take profits somewhere... At least, they are doing that when you are actively USE the card, as before they would just take monthly fees without any question... (btw. most of the banks still doing that...)

Cheers!

I also see that they charge 3 mBTC a day in the EULA should your balanaces become inactive. This is $150 USD at current prices. If you're sleeping, they take them from you.

There you go! You have found fine prints... Those who are searching will find... hehehe...
I'm not afraid about them and how they will earn... Thanks for this additional info!

Thanks for that review Zoltan! Sounds like customer service is an issue in too many places online. It is curious that they want you to get and use their products but they don't make them very user friendly. The card looks kind of cool though.

Actually, the product (card) isn't that bad... I mean it is user-friendly, only the supports aren't... As you said, the problem became very common for a lot of companies...

It sure is a card that I didn't know about so thanks for the review. Unfortunately customer service is something that is horrible for most businesses. Whether it be by phone or by email, they tend to be slow and cumbersome. I wish they would improve the system but I know its something that probably won't happen.

Yeah, it looks that every company cuts the budget for Customer Service, which sucks big time... It looks that all of them are more about getting new clients rather than keeping the old ones...

I guess everyone prefers what he/she is used to. :) I'd still choose the ones from crypto.com. Instead of monthly fees, you need to stake CRO for higher-level cards and bonuses.

I was checking crypto.com card for some time, even before the CRO tokens (they had another one before)... But, I didn't like how the previous token was going down in price, and they have changed the rules of min. amount of tokens many times...

But, I'm not bond/handcuffed by Wirex or any other card provider... Atm, I have Binance card also (not a fan of the exchange at all, but I wanted to have a cheap and solution that works) and will probably order some other for "just in case"... I know that many of these are today here, and tomorrow, who knows :)

Yup, I ordered Binance's card too, but somehow I did that without KYC and now I have to contact support to see if they'll send it or not after I went through KYC.

I might get one from BlockFi (or not), because they will have a yearly maintenance fee, not very cheap.

Wait... Who will have a yearly maintenance fee? Binance or BlockFi?
