Social currency. Currency for being social.

avatar

Literally, I will pay you to talk to me.

image.png

If you go to the dictionaries they will talk about the value of being social for your network and opportunities.

Social currency is a popular term that has not been around for long. It is understood as all the existing and potential resources which arise from the presence of social networks and communities – either online or offline.
Put simply, social currency is information that is shared by people as they go about their everyday lives.
Ref:

That's some web2 bullshit.

I'm talking web3.

**I will literally pay you for being my friend. **

Be social and receive currency.

I know which one that i prefer.

It's not easy but it beats working for a living. There is a reason that we all comment follow authors like taskmaster, khal, edicted, jongolson..... And it's not for their intelligent insights into the world of crypto. JK....

They have the money and we all want it.

So we pretend to read and like their content and make a few comments.

Great article. I like the bit where you said that we will all get rich and that you know everything about all of it.

Your insights are the best thing that i have ever read and you make posts good.

Sure @jongolson, you can make the champions league in splinterlands. Your the best Pokémon trainer out there.

Then wait for them to rain votes and crypto down on your head.

Will you be my friend?

I have some votes and will give them to anyone willing to talk with me. Not as much as some of the guys but my LEO votes is almost 2 LEO and my main vote is almost 2 HIVE. That should be enough for a few comments,

Well done.

Good post.

Your right Niall. You always are.

at a minimum.

I can't afford the good engagement yet. I'm not in that league.

I find it funny as it is bound to create success over time. If you have the choice of people to follow on Instagram of two celebrities and all other factors being equal in your interests, their content and your time....

Would you rather follow and comment on the influencer that gives out $5 upvotes to their followers or the one that gives out likes?

I think that 99% of people will follow and comment on the one who rewards their followers. We are just doing this on another level but over time the apps will catch up to the concept. I used to watch Mr.Beast on youtube as he always gave back form what he had earned.

As creators we need to create value on the platform but if we do that then we have the social currency and real currency to reward the people that bring that value.

Now we just need the right app to carry this concept to the masses.

LMAO! Great write up!

I agree. This is the future of social media. I always thought that social platforms like Twitter and Fakebook should offer revenue share for content creators. They make a fortune off OUR data. HIVE fixes this and the way it's currently structured takes away the need for revenue sharing!

Then wait for them to rain votes and crypto down on your head.

LOL! This cracked me up. I need to start commenting more.

LOL! This cracked me up. I need to start commenting more.

I love to get the comments on my posts. Even when they tell me thing that i don't want to hear.

It's a big part of why i'm still here on hive these days if form the connection that you make with other users as they engage with your work. People like yourself that i know straight away when i get the notification.

It's what makes it exciting.

It's also the future and we just need to see more and more apps built onto hive that leverage the technology here and bring in the people. It will happen but slowly for now.

I almost miss some of those newbies trying to get easy upvotes.

I don't really get any of them any more here. Something has gone very wrong. Most people actually read the articles now and leave thoughtful comments.

Hivebits blends Hive's blockchain and Bitcoin's ethos. Your effort = your reward. Mine HBIT simply 1-per-day with (no space): ! hivebits or ! HBIT or ! hbit or $ hbit.
Success! You mined .9 HBIT and the user you replied to received .1 HBIT on your behalf. You can receive 100% of the HBIT by replying to one of your own posts or comments. Or, support Hivebits at the official HBIT mine | your wallet | market | tools | connect | <><

This confirmation reply will go off when Resource Credits (RCs) get low. Yet, your hivebits command will still go through and you'll get your HBIT. :)

Nice post. Now vote ples

Haha great one, man! Even though the votes are very much appreciated, I really enjoy it when people leave comments on my posts. Even if they disagree with me. It doesn't happen all the time but maybe when my votes get a little more valuable I could start rewarding my readers better and incentivize that kind of engagement.

Free votes for everyone.

Will you be my friend!!!!

This is the most important part for me too. I can still get the upvotes just from posting but it gets very boring very fast if you know that people don't care or don't want to engage with it.

I've tried a lot of different strategies over the years to grow my account but the best one was the simplest one.

Comment on lots of posts.
Make connections.
Stake everything to my account.
Get engagement back from others.
Reward them.

Repeat the cycle and it works very well.

I'm still new-ish to the community but ever since I started following that same strategy, things began to improve a lot.

It's really that simple. It just takes consistency and commitment

Absolutely. Just look at any of the top performers across the tribes and every one of them are hard working and consistent. They showup, they create, they engagge and they stack hard with a long term plan in mind.

The difference with them to the ones that don't make it is that these users believe in the long term future of the chain and are setting themselves up accordingly.

You never see tarazkp or taskmaster powering down. They are stacking hard and earning as many rewards as possible for when hive is $10 and they can live like kings.

That's the best part of the podcast. I love listening to the tech guys getting ight into the details.

It makes no sense to me either but the concept sounds great.

We think in simple business terms. Make a product that people want and keep growing it. It doesn't matter how it works as long as it works.

I'm happy to count anybody on Hive as my friend and hep them to learn and grow.

I would never think of myself as a powerful hiver but i have grown a good account from years of hard work.

If anybody else wants to following that path then i am happy to help them to do the same.

I appreciate the votes I get but I never really take them for granted. In general, I just tend to go around my own feed and comment. When I first started, I didn't do so well on trying to get people to respond back but I started listening to taskmaster4450 and commenting because I can.

I don't just vote on every comment but i do vote on every comment that i think is a genuine engagement and not just a passing well done.

It is the best way to build up your brand and your name on the site so that when we do have a million users on leofinance that you will be one of the names that people flock to.

Yur name is your brand so every comment that you make now adds to it's future value and social currency. Even replying to the people that comment on my articles builds up my social credit as people know that i appreciate them taking the time to engage with me and try to return the favour.

When the Hive model becomes the standard model for all online services, does that mean we have the new social credit system? I hope this system stays and not the Chinese version.
Great article Niall, you're.. lol

Hive has a social credit system of it's own that is based on hive power and reputation.

Every positive move that you make in building your account will carry into the future and that is why it's so important to comment and engage. They are the most positive things that you can do for your account right now.

Ahaha, great way of thinking, I'll agree with that! I'm not a heavy voter yet but I like exchanging thoughts with people as much as I can. For example @bravetofu is someone I enjoy sharing thoughts over stuff!

I always like talking to anyone who picks the truth over the shiny, fluffy coated BS. Let's keep in touch bro!

We all have to start somewhere.

I built up my voting power over five years and lot and lots of commenting and posting.

Its actally a lot easier to grow these days than when i joined as the rewards are much more spread out and the tribes make it easier to be seen.

I'll check out bravetofu and see what they are up to.

I'm happy to engage with anybody and have a real chat on any subject that i can. A lot of people will only print shiny fluffy thoughs bt it's far more important to ask the real questions about projects.

You know where to find me, anytime.

This was just one of those posts where your looking at the screen and start typing.

I normally try to do something proper but every so often my mind goes on a tangent.

I appreciate all of the users who engage with my content here on hive. It's very easy to autovote or to ignore users but the ones who take the time to read and reply are the ones that you want to know.

Not a problem! This one was quite relatable and I enjoyed reading it. I freewrite quite often as well. Just put your thoughts on paper or on your screen. :)

I like the fact that Hive provides a great way to appreciate engagement. I feel that it makes the bond between you and your follower even stronger.

Thank you, sir, for your wisdom! You help me a lot!

Heheheh... Great post, man... I'm doing a similar thing by upvoting every comment on my posts, or on my replies... I'm doing that to show appreciation to people who spent their time with my post, but I do agree that there are many who exploit that...

Upvoting comments have a double side... Maybe it "forces" people to read your shit, which usually doesn't work as they don't read it at all... lol... (speaking from my experience with doing SL and RS giveaways...)

Anyways, as always, there are 5-10% of people who are worthy of engagement and I suppose that we are here for them...

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project and it will be highlighted in the next post!

You nailed it with this comment. Have an upvote.

It's important to reward your readers and commenters. It builds a relationship that is give and take.

You can out the scammers and the spammers very fast.

Build bridges to the 10% that are doing the right things and will be here to grow as the platform grows.

It might not always be the best policy to buy engagement but it does help growth and activity.

Personally I know the users and the people that i like the best and will put most of my effort in engaging with them and the rest of my effort into engaging with new users and seeing which category to put them into. The 10% or the rest.

Hive is seriously too early.

It will be amazingly massive when corps like Instagram discover that people should be rewarded for their social interaction. But then again I wonder how they will do it without borrowing from Hives upvote distribution mechanism.

Lol at the post. But all in all you have to agreee that the “nice post thanks ser” have really reduced from back in the day. Heck when I first got here I was one of those “nice post thanks for sharing people”. SMH 🤦‍♀️

Way too early.
But the good news is that we are here way too early as well.
The better news is that we are still here even though it is too early and have a huge advantage over the ones that come in the next 2-5 years.

I don't kow how the big groups will make it work but we still know that there will be an undercurrent where they want to benifit from the users. at least here we are all part owners and should be trying to make it successful for our own benifit and not to reward the whales.

you have to agreee that the “nice post thanks ser” have really reduced from back in the day. Heck when I first got here I was one of those “nice post thanks for sharing people”

Your right one this one. I get very few of these anymore and almost none form the leo side of things. Having a specific and professional front end for crypto content is the way forward and cuts out the messing that we used to see on a blockchain level.

Personally, I do not believe in pandering to whales. It might suffice in the short run but in the long run, you want to build a network of friends on various levels of influence. This is because those on your level and below are most likely to interact with you which is the best recipe for building social capital.

As we grow as creators we can also incentive people to comment on our posts like the taskmasters of this world. There is no harm in doing that if you have the scope and influence.

p.s I am engaging with this post mainly because it appears on the curation pick

Most people talk about web3 so ubiquitously I wonder how many people know what that really means or if they just use it as floating signifier to simp for anything blockchain adjacent. Before we get into the meat of the topic, we should clear up a misconception that seems to be creating a lot of cognitive dissonance. Web3 didn't come into form to replace Web2 like it's some archaic fossil or boomer cultural misanthrope. They are optimized in a stack that synergize with each other. Much like a tech stack. It's not like every advancement we make replaces or disrupts its predecessors, in fact many work in tandem. Movies did not replace books. Many respected cinema pieces are actually based on novels.

I think the problem with the social currency conversation is that we are conflating too many ideas and propping up perverse incentive structures which are close to duplications of problematic systems that are already in place elsewhere. Upvoting culture on Hive is very reminiscent of fiefdoms and despite claiming it as web3, we see less autonomous expressions and more echo chambers and orbiter culture.

Before socialists misappropriated the word equity, there used to be this idea called social equity. You spend quality time with people and build relationships and then when you need something like help moving, you tap into that social equity and your friends help you out. You can also overburden your social equity by asking too much and not putting enough in. This creates a natural homeostasis so things can balance themselves out and the entire social network can prosper without being taxed too much in one area. Alternatively, Hive has a weird trickle down economic theory so the systems themselves are never designed to balance out. I think the important takeaway is to not put Hive up on a pedestal as an end all be all type thing. It's an experiment in progress and the most successful people with apply bayesian theory and improve on its methods instead of just yes-manning a stop-gap measure.

Being social always pays even if people don't vote comments as that is still a small percentage that do that. I upvote comments 99% of the time and ignore the ones who I know never read the post. Funny you say this but youtubers who came to Hive were the worst offenders as they never responded to comments and you just have to look on HiveBuzz stats to see that.
