The 2015 Labour of Hercules: The 9th Labour - Girdle of Hippolyta

”Black birds tend to like Shiny Things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

I’m taking a late page out @thekittygirl and @silversaver888 ‘s Germania Mint conspiracy posts and present my Gal(s) with a kick arse weapon. I don’t have the entire set of the 12 Labors, I just picked the ones I like best, and just this very one.

I won’t get deep into Greek mythology as we already are aware how dysfunctional these Greek gods were and in a way cursed with typical human faults, frailties and weaknesses in contrast to their supernatural powers.

Hippolyta

Reverse: Hippolyta facing right holding a Spear. IX
Mintage: Silver – 7,052, Copper – 5,741
Fine Silver 0.999, 31.1g

Hippolyta is known as the Queen of the Amazons. The Girdle gives her the Authority as Queen but also imbued with magical powers. What exactly those powers are, no one knows for sure. Perhaps that scroll got lost. The Girdle was a gift to Hippolyta from Ares, the God of War.

As the legend goes, Hercules is in the midst of doing penance for his crime of murdering his family in a fit of madness, a madness caused by his Step mother and goddess Hera to rebuke her husband Zeus in his cheating ways, recover the Girdle for King Eurystheus’s spoiled daughter.

Bilge Rats! What a soap opera.

Hercules

39mm Diameter
Brand: Provident Metals

Arriving at the city of Themiskyra, Hercules behaved like a gentleman met with Hippolyta and convinced her to give him the Girdle. Queen Hera didn’t want to let Hercules off easy, disguised herself as an Amazon and convinced the other Amazons that Hercules planned to capture their Queen Hippolyta and they attacked the men.

The Queen was killed in the battle, different accounts claim Hippolyta’s death was accidental, others claim Hercules killed her. Another totally different story had her killed when crashing a wedding!

Whatever the cause, Hercules fought off the Amazons, secured the Girdle, and got out of Dodge the city of Themiskyra and sailed back to King Eurystheus with his prize.

R

I think this round has pretty cool design with Hippolyta wearing the Girdle, and holding her spear in a vigilant stance. The Protector of Themiskyra.

Most portrayals of Hippolyta, including modern day ones, have the Amazon Queen bearing a sword rather than a spear. Also Amazons were reputed to be highly skilled Archers, hence to their reputation of having their right breast removed as not to get in the way of the draw. So Spears tend not to be the Primary weapon of an Amazon as they are more relegated to Guard duty or to holding an opponent at bay.

My SHINWA Sojutsu spear is modeled after the Japanese Yari short Spear with the total length of 60 inches. The 14” tip is 1040 Damascus steel in 2096 layers for toughness. Definitely much simpler to learn and use than a Katana. It is among the first weapons taught to common Ashigaru conscript foot soldiers.

My Opinion of Provident Metals Labour of Hercules: The 9th Labour - Girdle of Hippolyta!

Totally Bad Ass!!!

And I am a proud member of #ladiesofsgs4eva

Totally awesome, sis @kerrislravenhill. love that photo of you with a spear, just like Hippolyta holding a spear! Beautiful silver rounds. Are the reverses the same for all the 12 labors series? I really like the Hippolyta! Great show!
Be safe and take care, lovely sis @kerrislravenhill 🥰🌺🤙 anda million hugs and kisses🤗💕

You know me as a bit Retro in my style Sis @silversaver888 but I do enjoy today's modern conveniences and Technology.

The Reverses depict a different Labour Hercules had to deal with to earn his 'Forgiveness' of his Crime. Personally, it's a Bum Rap on the poor Hero for something his bitter Step godmother had more to do with than the burden solely on him. Like I said, "What a soap opera!"
The obverse of Hercules is the same on each of the Rounds.
Thanks for Commenting Sis, Always with Love! 🌺 💝 🌹 💓 🌸

Hey @saffisara There is another AWESOME Silver Shield round that has a Gal with a Spear and I think you know what I mean. It is one of the ORIGINAL Silver Bullet - Silver Shield Iconic rounds that defined Chris Duane's message.

The story itself is according to legend. I just merely summarized the whole tragic story into today's lexicon and colloquial language.

I used to indulge in reading cheap bookstore bargain Historical Romances. For now I'm taking a little time off that writing due to a lot of real life demands and dealing with extra Work responsibilities. My Vacation is even cancelled because of the shortage of Nursing Staff.

Not as much damage as this, meet my little SMG Automatic friend here. Damn, I may be a Traditionalist and old fashioned but I also enjoy the Modern Conveniences too. Don't have to do things the hard way, Lol!

That's a nice piece of blade steel!
Lately, silver rounds have been really hard to get here in the states. Is it any easier where you are?

Glad you asked!
Forget looking for ASEs and Maple leafs unless you can wait about 6+ weeks.
There are some Generics at my Favorite LCS , Buffalo rounds but they were a $7 premium above spot when I last checked.

This series is 2015 and I was just getting into Stacking precious metals that fall.
The mintages are quite low, each well under 10k so it could have plenty of collection potential so I wished I could have picked up a few more of these.

Dig that lady with the spear, looks all like, "I would totally stab you with this." Bwahahahahaa! Round is pretty badass too ;)

As a pre-emptive kind if thing, every once in a while I like to post a few of my Ninja pictures with my Stacking posts just as a warning to those who live in my town, that may possibly recognize me, and may come to the mistaken conclusion that I could be an easy target for thieves and robbers.

And I'd say something like, "Prepare to lose a body part, my choice!"
Of course I will proceed under Bushido expectations.
