Speaking with a friend and co-worker with whom we interact daily on various issues related to the system of a company for which we provide development and maintenance services, he told me that he was excited about the possibility of buying a modern and powerful RTX 3070 graphics card. In the last two months, it had fallen in price to almost half of its maximum value reached. It is not a model of the last, but for him, it is enough.
My friend is a young enthusiast, connoisseur of games and consoles, he has a collection of old models that would be the envy of many. Of course, this GPU wants it to be incorporated into his gaming computer as a replacement for an older, less powerful GeForce 8800 GT.
He had no idea why the value of the card had dropped so much and he hoped it would stay that way until the collection of his next salary, in a distant 20 days.
Then I explained to him that these plates are used in cryptocurrency mining and that they fell in price because bitcoin and all the others had also fallen in the same proportion as their desired component. Here in my country, this price decrease is perfectly noticeable, in the same way as the hard drives that threatened to be a scarce and expensive good but that the collapse in the price of cryptocurrencies had also reduced expectations and of course demand and the price.
In parallel, here they are keeping the US dollar price artificially delayed. We are in the electoral season. The government does not want the price to skyrocket because that would further increase inflation, which is already high. It is a risky practice that shows that politicians do anything to win an election, even against the common interests of those who vote for them. I do not want to get into political issues because it is not my strong suit, but I can affirm that this also influences the price at which imported components are obtained.
I then return to the GPU and its value, my friend listened to my explanation through his headphones since we have not seen each other since the pandemic began, he was perplexed, he was never interested in economics or finance, he listened to me as if I was talking about the theory of relativity and so he let me know.
So I gave up exposing my knowledge of the subject and did not bother him anymore. I hope for your sake that the price of cryptocurrencies remains stable until the end of the month, I did not dare to tell you that perhaps if you buy some you can protect yourself from a sharp increase, although they could also fall, and then it would be further away.
I left him excited about the possibility of reaching the long-awaited component that would give him a superior gaming experience; it is Better to stay that way, regardless of fluctuations in prices, investments, and financial speculation, for crazy enough with me.
Hablando con un amigo y compañero de trabajo con el cual interactuamos diariamente por diversos temas referidos al sistema de una empresa para la cual brindamos servicios de desarrollo y mantenimiento, me comentaba que estaba entusiasmado con la posibilidad de comprar una tarjeta gráfica RTX 3070 moderna y poderosa, ya que en los últimos dos meses había bajado de precio hasta casi la mitad de su máximo valor alcanzado. No es un modelo de los últimos, pero para él es suficiente.
Mi amigo es un joven entusiasta, conocedor de juegos y consolas, tiene una colección de modelos antiguos que sería envidia de muchos. Por supuesto, esta GPU la quiere para incorporar a su computadora de juegos en reemplazo de una antigua y menos poderosa GeForce 8800 GT.
No tenía la más mínima idea de porqué el valor de la tarjeta había bajado tanto y esperaba que se mantuviera así hasta el cobro de su próximo sueldo, dentro de unos lejanos 20 días.
Entonces le expliqué que esas placas son utilizadas en minería de criptomonedas y que bajaron de precio porque el bitcoin y todas las demás también habían bajado en la misma proporción al de su deseado componente. Aquí en mi país se nota perfectamente esa disminución en el precio, de igual manera que los discos duros que amagaron con ser un bien escaso y caro pero que el derrumbe en la cotización de las criptomonedas también había hecho disminuir las expectativas y por supuesto la demanda y el precio.
En forma paralela, aquí están manteniendo artificialmente retrasada la cotización del dólar estadounidense, estamos en época electoral y el gobierno no quiere que la cotización se dispare porque eso haría aumentar más todavía la inflación que ya de por si es alta. Es una práctica riesgosa y que pone de manifiesto que los políticos hacen cualquier cosa por ganar una elección, aun en contra de los intereses comunes de quienes los votan. No quiero entrar en temas políticos porque no es mi fuerte pero si puedo afirmar que eso también influye en el precio al que se consiguen los componentes importados.
Vuelvo entonces a la GPU y su valor, mi amigo escuchó mi explicación por sus auriculares ya que no nos vemos desde que comenzó la pandemia, quedó perplejo, nunca le interesó la economía ni las finanzas, me escuchaba como si le estuviera hablando de la teoría de la relatividad y así me lo hizo saber.
Así que desistí de exponer mis conocimientos del tema y no lo molesté más. Espero por su bien que el precio de las criptomonedas se mantenga estable hasta fin de mes, no me animé a decirle que quizás si compra algunas puede llegar a resguardarse de un aumento brusco, aunque también podrían bajar y entonces estaría más lejos.
Lo dejé entusiasmado con la posibilidad de llegar al ansiado componente que le daría una experiencia superior con los juegos; mejor que se mantenga así, al margen de los vaivenes en las cotizaciones, en las inversiones y en la especulación financiera, para loco basta conmigo.
