Seeds of an idea...

Since discovering LeoFinance, I've been doing some reading back down the list, and whilst the crypto stuff is interesting (and I'm enjoying learning), some of the posts about building income though community engagement have chimed with some thoughts I've been toying with for a while. But not necessarily because I'm looking to 'make money' per se...

I'm an amateur musician with a small audience. I've been casting about for a place to try to build a small community around what I do. I'm on the verge of deleting Facebook - mainly as I think it is a force for ill in the world, but also (IMHO) it's not a place where small artists can thrive, so I won't miss it.
Twitter I get on better with, but it's not a place for cohesive discussion within a community.

I've looked at the dedicated artist sites, but they price themselves out for someone like me who (if you look at my music stuff as a business) makes a steady monthly loss, or just don't feel like a fit for an artist of my size. Did I mention I was small ;-)

I have a Website with Wordpress - and that was starting to be the focus of my thinking. Going a bit old skool, but I'd still need to get people there somehow.

Well by now, you'll see where this is going. Hive, with its communities, reward for content creation and engagement and some of the 2nd layer tokens is starting to feel like a nice fit. I think it's a place I could make a home in, maybe bring some new folk along and also, possibly, find a few new folk here who like what I do. It also lends itself to me picking up on some of the other creative things I want to start doing again, like writing. Easy to curate multiple things across communities.

And, with the opportunity to generate some income through engagement and rewards perhaps, just perhaps, I could cover my 'running costs'.

So that's the rough plan - not to engage to invest and nurture a compounding profit, but more to build a bit of a community around what I do in and across some communities, and see where it might go.

It sounds like a fine experiment to me. Much more attractive than chasing Instagram followers and Facebook likes. It feels more real

So this is a statement of intent as much as anything. I still need to have a proper think around some things - but JFDI will come into play before too long, I think.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Say 100 engaged 'followers' is better than 10,000 nobodies.

The future of Hive itself is in communities. Everyone is more engaged because they're actually interested in the content and its not just getting lost in the crowd.

Good luck with it :)

Exactly.

And also, as I see it at the moment, Hive feels like the best place I've found that relatively easily supports what most people are like - that they have many interests, and often one post will dip into a few areas.

Thanks for the good wishes :)

Sounds like a good plan and why I moved mostly over here from Facebook 2 and a half years ago to share my music here and read other forms of content. There are a lot of supportive folks here and I think it's possible to bring others over who have felt disgruntled with the current mainstream offerings, the fact you can earn something as well which you can invest in to your music career is a plus as well 🙂

Yeah - I must admit that whilst the shape of the idea/approach had been rattling round my noggin for a while, finding hive.blog and then seeing what you were doing and getting to know you a bit better were what gave it a bit more shape.

Yeah things always take shape when you spend long enough at it and keep an open mind. Things just fell into place and your goals change as time goes on, especially with the fast paced crypto scene! So much has changed here in the last 2.5 years that I've been on here but as far as replacing Facebook pages go for musicians, it's a complete no brainer in my opinion!

I have hoped to see more musicians join Hive as it can give them some income and fans can earn too. I do appreciate that if they have to manage accounts on multiple social platforms it can be a lot of work and other places have a larger potential audience. Hive needs to either reach some critical mass where it becomes more appealing or people need to just take a chance on it and try to bring their fans over.

I will try to support musicians where I can and have just given you a delegation. If you know anyone who needs an account I can create lots.

That's awesome, mate - I appreciate the support.

It'd be nice to think that I can help by being an example of what can possibly be done. But I don't want to get ahead of myself or big myself up before I've even started 😆

I've been chatting to @nickyhavey a lot about these things (and he's already a good ambassador for this stuff). I really do think there is potential, and I think it's a grass roots thing. It's about starting small - small artists, small audiences, small revenues - and then grow out. Show the benefits working and I think others will get interested. Right now there's a lot of FUD around crypto and music. Lots of folk promising it'll be the saviour of 'the biz' but no-one really delivering.

But this is different. It's not about audience (which is exactly what Spotify et al are about. And then sometimes not even that - that horrible work 'reach' comes in), it's about community.

And I think it's better to have 100 communities of 100 people than 1 community of 10000. I think Hive is quite suited to that.

But I'm starting to wiffle, so I'll stop.

I guess we'll see 😃

Yeah I've been trying to be the example as well and show what's possible - as you know, haters gonna hate but I started here with nothing 2.5 years ago and it's built up over time, as you'd expect with any social site, you need to network and get your name out there but successes do come. The good thing is that the set up is a lot better now than when I first started and things are a lot easier (although still need to have slightly technical knowledge to get around).

@fionasfavourites would probably like to see more of your waffling, that's right up her street (in joke incoming):

Good job I like you, @nickyhavey!! That said, I'm glad you called me over.

@gribbles I like the way you think. I started on the blockchain in its former iteration just over 3 years ago. I, too, came with nothing, and I shan't rabbit on about my intentions - they're there for all to read on my WordPress blog. Yes, I have one of those and I have a somewhat different - and less active /engaged - audience there. I don't eschew them because that site has multiple purposes for me and I am considered (ha!) about what I post to the blockchain, from where and why. I do know that my "pure" WordPress followers are not interested in crypto or hive-related challenges. That's why, over the years, and largely thanks to the @yourtop3 contest which I really enjoy, the "Fiona treatment" aka a load of bunkum waffle is what I've become known for.

As you see, it's not difficult for me to bang out a gazillion words and some of my posts head towards the 3k word mark. That said, my interests are eclectic and I find it difficult to be penned (ha!) into a single community. Despite that, I'm surviving here and have built a little following circle of virtual friends with whom I regularly and happily engage, and which is also growing. Equally happily.

Equally happy to be around if you'd like to bounce some ideas around - you'll find me on Discord - with the same handle.

Ah - that sounds cool.

Firstly - full marks for using 'eschew' online. That'd get you lynched in less salubrious neigbourhoods.

Secondly, it sounds not only like we're coming from the same place, but also heading in similar directions. That's nice.

I appreciate the offer to bounce stuff around as well - always good to hook up with an experienced traveller who might have some tips around walking this particular path.

And if you're open to joining in on some hive-related activities, look out for the monthly Power Up Day initiative that @traciyork coordinates. It's one of the things that got me paying attention...

Yeah spot on @steevc and the potential for creatives here is pretty big, such a hidden gem I think and it's not going to fade because the dedication and passion from those who help run the chain is plain to see.

Thanks for supporting Mr G with the delegation 👍

Seems like a good initial plan. Earning while promoting. And when you least expect it, someone on Hive stumbles on your content and offers a deal.
Good luck!

I think as a small bar gig, Hive Block Chain can not be beat, especially when people find and start listening to the music post. I am not always in the mood to actively listen to music so much any more, but with the PeakD interface, I have a list, (it is growing), of some music minded posters. I use the list function a lot on PeakD, so while I did not actively follow you, I do have you on one of my in the mood for something list.

The network effect is pretty effective on Hive, and I hope you garner more followers, or list adders in the future.

Y'know - that's pretty cool.

One of the things musicians have nowadays is we're pushed to push ourselves relentlessly in front of folk on twitter, FB, IG, whatever. Trying to get our head above the throng, where the signal to noise ratio is just so difficult. It's exhausting - not only for us, but the people we are trying to get to listen to us.

And it puts them in the wrong frame of mind. It's like being constantly leafleted in the street. You might read the first one or two. But then you just grab them and bin them. And then you start to get cross with the folk pushing the leaflets.

So I like the idea that while wandering though Hive, one of my 'leaflets' has caught someone's eye and they've popped in in a drawer to read later.

Yeah. I like that. I'll take that gladly

When you find yourself in the right frame of mind to have a look, I hope you like it 😊

So far I have 17 list, 7 of which are purely mood list. I am kind of slow adding and hunting for new talents but I do follow people who re-blog people so I have 10 people on my music list so far. Steeve and Nick are pretty good at re-blogging or mentioning new talents.
