I would also suggest keeping a "spending journal." It is an easy first step, you write down everything you spend on for a set amount of time, and then look over it to see where the easiest place to cut down is.
When I stopped eating out and started cooking more at home I found that I was spending lots of extra money on stuff like butter (to make desserts) I easily cut my costs by buying in bulk from the big box store. I went from paying about 6 dollars per pound to buying four pounds for 10 dollars, makes a big difference when you are baking daily.
