It's a Wonderful Life on the Blockchain!

avatar

There's an old saying from the much-beloved Christmas film It's a Wonderful Life that goes like this: "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings." The things I'm seening lately, on our own little corner of the blockchain, inspired me to write this post.

I'm sitting here on a chilly April morning (It's been cold here lately in Pennsylvania) after a long weekend filled with coursework. I haven't had much time to comment, much less write posts, but did pop in a few times to scan the homepage of Hive and LeoFinance. There are times when you see a thing and don't really realize it's importance until given a chance to step back and view the whole picture. What I'm talking about is the wonderful welcome we give to new people.

It's even more obvious now, then when this whole thing started way back in 2016. Some new blogger will show up with their introduction post and that all too familiar "25" on their profile page. The response given is phenomenal, with numerous warm, welcoming comments and healthy upvotes given. Boy, do we know how to make someone feel like a member of the family! I feel this is really important in fostering a sense of brotherhood among those who join us and making them feel like staying awhile.

We are family

The point to realize is that it's a non-trivial thing to make the choice to join us here on the blockchain. I can still remember the process of signing up and then waiting for that approval before I could start writing again. As I've said recently, this place (in it's former incarnation), helped reawaken my passion for blogging. I had to surmount trust issues I'd had on another platform, in order to be where I am today.

And that's why engagement inititives from my friends over at @leomarkettalk are crucial in developing new bloggers and building that sense of community. While you're at it, come join our chat!

So it's heartwarming to see how we roll out the red carpet whenever someone makes that leap of faith and decides to join us. Close your eyes and imagine that whenever we gain a new member, a bell goes off and an angel gets their wings.

We're doing so much good on this platform. There are people who are able to support their families from the loving effort they put forth here on Hive and the other front-ends. There's a real sense of camaraderie from all of the suggestions and helpful tips in order to start them out the right way. Thanks to all of you for being such awesome tribe brothers! Wait, what's that? I think I hear a little bell going off right now. James Stewart would be proud!.

Thank You So Much!

I agree with you that we do a really good job of making sure that people are welcome here. I think we need to carry that along past their first post a lot of times though. Many times people get a lot of love on their first post and then it kind of dies off and they end up giving up because they don't see the same response from every post.

I can see where you're coming from, but I wonder if that isn't a function of coverage? You know, with so many new people joining up and curators being spread out trying to cover everything. Still, like you, I think we give one hell of a welcome when they join our tribe! :)

I think it has always been like that though. On Hive as a whole and the other platform before it. It isn't something that I fault Leo for or blame exclusively on them. I just think we need to do a better job of following up with those new users. Myself included. I am horrible at it, I will be the first to admit.

There definitely is a retention problem in HIVE and I think it has more to do with people comparing rewards between themselves and others when they start. I think it would be great to have a general FAQ button somewhere in each front-end.

I think that would be good. I really think tribes need to develop and promote their community front ends a little better. Ideally, people shouldn't even know they are making Hive on their posts. I think that should just be an added bonus on the back end. It might help new users to just be focused on their specific community and never even see all of the Hive rewards that happen on the rest of the chain.

Yea but people are always fixated on rewards and when they only see HIVE, there is a difference between what a newcomer and what someone who has been here for a while gets.

Which is why I think the focus needs to be pulled away from Hive. They should mainly be focusing on the tribe token that they are posting to. Eventually they can branch out as they understand the inner workings of the blockchain.

That is true.

However, sadly, someone mentioned that people are now setting up new accounts and writing introduction posts so as to milk the reward pool and get the introduction posts upvotes. Hence, we are seeing the actions of some starting to taint that.

We truly are our own worst enemies.

Slowly, in spite of that, things are changing. We can make a difference it just requires a lot of effort.

Yea I saw it yesterday. We can only monitor and wonder whether or not they know how to implement the best tags all the time.

I would hope the new people show up at the @leomarkettalk post. If they do then we can answer their questions and help them along the way. The only problem is that we don't know who is actually new or not.
