poor people tax

poortaxmonopoly.jpg

The lower class has been stepped on since the beginning of time. The easiest way to build a lot of wealth is to take a little bit from a lot of people. Because poor people are the most plentiful on the pyramid, any way institutions can scrape a little bit off the top, even pennies, will yield significant gains over time.

Hidden charges

Often times poor people don't even realize they're paying a tax. Credit card companies place all the burden of fees, not on the credit-card holder, but on the vendor that accepts the credit card. How crazy is that?

This leads one to ask: "Wait, if businesses are being charged a 1%-3% fee to accept credit-cards, then why would they accept them in the first place?" The answer is deceptively simple: they make money doing it.

If they accept credit-cards, then people with the credit-cards will shop there. All the business has to do is account for the credit card fees by raising prices by like 1%-3% for everyone. Now anyone who shops at that store is paying for these fees without even knowing it via the increased cost of goods.

reputationcreditscorerating.png

Maybe now you're thinking: "What about supply/demand and the free market?" If one store charges more for goods/services then people won't shop there and take the business elsewhere. Unfortunately, we're already way past that, and credit-cards won by a landslide.

The early adopters of credit cards simply matched prices in the beginning to stay competitive and used the extra business they received to make up for the losses. Once other businesses around them started accepting credit cards, everyone raised their prices together, and here we are.

APR

And that's just hidden credit-card fees. What about the actual fees? I got an offer for a credit card today with 25% APR. What a deal. This kind of usury put's a person's own reputation up for collateral. If you mess up your credit score, it can be difficult to get a car or even find a place to live (renters included).

Overdraft fees

I've never had an overdraft fee, but it seems like everyone I talk to has. Banks will extend their customers a "line of credit" when they don't have enough money in their account to cover the charge, and then gouge them after the fact with a $30 overdraft fee.

This obviously only happens to poor people because only poor people don't have money in their account (for the most part). It costs the bank very little to extend this line of credit, but like a loan shark they will charge the poor people $30 for each infraction.

gameover1.jpg

Speaking of infractions

On top of that shit sandwich, banks have been known to purposefully reorganize charges so that someone trying to make sure they don't get overdrafted does anyway. You might put $100 in your bank account and then buy 5 different things for say $5-$10 each. The bank will see that the $100 hasn't cleared yet, but neither has the other 5 charges, and they purposefully put the 5 charges in front of the $100 deposit that came first so they can ding you for $150 in overdraft fees. These vipers have no shame.

A lot of these shady tactics were made illegal and banks have gotten in a ton of trouble for them. However, banks are so high on the important-people ladder that these fines are almost always lower than the money they made doing the crime in the first place. Capitalism at it's finest.

cartrouble.jpg

Late registration

My roommate had a very late registration on his car and they charged him so many late fees the final tally was almost $1000. Again, poor people don't have the money to pay for stuff, so we just fine them over and over again until they finally cough up the money. Pretty gross.

Healthcare

Insurance and healthcare can also be a huge burden for the poor. Bernie Mac died of pneumonia because he didn't go to the hospital soon enough. That's how deep this stuff runs, even when they have the money to go to the doctor the upbringing and culture around going to the doctor kick in. Medical care is so expensive that it is culturally accepted and even encouraged to roll the dice and hope it all works out.

BernieMac.jpg

Celebrity Net Worth reports that Mac had a net worth of $15 million at the time of his death.

Dental work is another big one. If your tooth hurts, you should go to the dentist. However, people without the money just ignore it until the problem becomes a hundred times worse. I'm actually guilty of this right now. Hate the dentist, need to go... ignoring it for now.

Even the kind of food we eat plays a huge factor in healthcare costs. Those who eat low quality food and/or don't have the time/energy to exercise will pay the price later while not even realizing it. You get what you pay for. Time is money. A cheeseburger is no substitute for vegetables and lean meat.

Status

There's also the issue of appearance and status in society. If you look like an unkept homeless person it's gonna be a lot harder to get a job. Culturally, status symbols are very important, especially when considering marginalized communities where the difference between getting a job could be writing Joe on the resume instead of Jose. Systemic racism lurking in the background definitely plays a factor in all of this.

Conclusion

Society loves to blame its problems on poor people. Why is there so much gang violence? Why are so many people overdosing on drugs? Why are there so many people in prison? It must be because people are bad! They should learn to pick themselves up by their bootstraps and stop being poor!

Laughable

When in reality society is responsible for all these problems. The system is rigged and those at the bottom of the meat grinder get desperate as they get taken advantage of again and again and again.

These problems are going to get worse before they get better. The lower class doesn't have much left to give, and the elite has been targeting the middle class and pushing them down for a while now. Small businesses are being pushed out and the good jobs are being eliminated, automated, and outsourced to other countries. It's not looking great for the legacy economy, that's for damn sure.

I see crypto as the solution to all of this, but decentralized governance is slow to act and pick a direction. Also, decentralization is very inefficient. There doesn't seem to be enough lifeboats for everyone. We are all lucky to be here so early in the game.

This is 100% true. I've had times in my life that despite working 50 plus hours a week, I still qualified for food stamps. I've also gotten to a point where I make nearly 3x the national average. There are fees that come with being "broke" that you don't deal with when you have money in the bank. I know I am very lucky to be where I am. Some people that are poor will stay that way because of a broken system. Don't get me wrong. I am a big fan of capitalism but the cost of admission is getting too damn high.

Very sadistic practices. My family, friends, and neighbors all fall for the "society says".

Fiat is going to crush them.

Let’s not forget NSF fees.

A while back, a company that I never bought anything from charged my bank account. That caused a huge avalanche of issues.

My back account was slightly short of the amount that the unauthorized merchant was trying to steal. Then an approved recurring purchase was unable to go through because of the previous stated unauthorized withdrawal. I ended up with two NSF charges from my bank totaling $97 CAD.

And still needed groceries to feed my child.

This story doesn’t stop there. It was a chaotic mess for months.

Non-sufficient Fund charges are clearly applied to those who do not have funds. Then the banks (and often the merchants) actually bleed the stones of people who DON’T have funds.

Little by little, the poverty agenda nibbles at people until they are struggling all the more. It might not seem like much but those small things can and do disrupt lives. Sometimes slowly and other times over night.

Disgusting.

Credit cards are banned in my family, there is 1 single use for them, maybe 2 when it comes to travel, aside from that it's foolish to touch credit.

I can get cryptocurrency loans now anyway, just sell for USDt if I needed a loan or credit, some exchanges will even give me a visa nowadays.

Reading your article so late at night here made me...overthink maybe: Is something really ours than our body, health, energy, and crypto? We pay taxes for everything, indeed. We are owned and enslaved on different levels.
Allow me to upvote it and reblog it.

Thank you for such a decrypting insight and a wake-up call!

Credit cards actually pay you if you are smart about using them. Many credit cards give you cash back of anywhere from 1 to 5 percent on purchases. As long as you pay off your balance each month so that you aren't paying the exorbitant interest then it works in your favor.

i am kinda happy that i am living in a part of the earth where cash is still fine and no one is hating on it.

Some years ago i had some money on my account and as we were going out i thought i will just use the card to get some cash on the ATM. My friend ended up paying for the night. When i asked in the bank what is up with my card they said that i don't receive regular payments on it so i can only use it at the band to get the cash out. So i did, all of it, and said fuck you. Now i use the account only when i really have to.

Also really lucky that i don't owe anything to the bank, no credits, no loans...

how about all these cash advance places you see' where theyll give you a "payday afvance loan" of 20to30% and all you need is to give them the title of yr car. such predatory practices. and they must do tons of business because they are all over.

im still working on getting rid of my credit cards, but they are all 0%-but most people with bad credit aren't probably gonna get those offers(or if you do, it won't be enough credit to transfer all your balance) you have to try and take advantage of the system when you can😎

it's obviously really hard to dig yourself out of a hole when you have a ripoff apr to begin with

When I was still heavily indebted, I used to do the zero percent thing on credit cards too. I figured, I'm on the verge of bankruptcy anyway, might as well try to use this to my advantage. I would take the 0% offers with the longest term, usually 18 months. Then I would put all of my card debt on said card and take the 3% hit (less than 2% APR), then pay only the minimum for that term. Any extra income I had would go in my brokerage account and I gambled in the stock market with it. Then once I grew my portfolio to the size of the credit card balance, I waited until the end of the term and balloon paid it off.

Before I got into stocks, you could actually get a high yield savings account (pre-2008), and the bank actually paid a higher interest rate than the 2% I was paying on the 0% intro rate card. At one point I was making 5.5% on my savings account, and the banks were effectively paying me 3.5% APY to loan me the money. The FED killed that one when they dropped the funds rate to near zero though. I made a lot more in stocks anyway.

Long story short, if you have the knowledge, you can make the banking system pay you to use it, even if you're deep into credit card debt. It's harder to do now than it used to be, but it's still possible. You just need to do your due diligence and be very good about making payments on time and not overdrafting. Either of those they use to justify jacking up your rates. Also, you need to pay off those 0% cards before the end of the term. Many of them retroactively apply interest to the balance once you get to the end of the term.

Oh my God. Those Pay Day Loans are always in poor neighborhoods. They charge 30% interest. They should be illegal or better regulated.

I live on my credit card all my money goes into getting me a yield somewhere and I use the banks money for 55 days interest free! Sure I pay the fees and for the credit card itself but my yield covers all of that and then some!

Those 55 days I get to earn a yield also compounds over time so the fees become even less of an issue

I do see the problem with credit cards and I agree it’s sort of predatory but I do think it’s still willing buyer willing seller at least here! People pay that premium for convenience and they also don’t bother to learn how to beat leverage financial tools

If everyone did what I did banks would probably be cancelling credit cards for a lot of people lol

If someone sets a trap for you, figure out how to trap them in it! There’s so many poverty tax and there’s a war on poverty, governments and banks are looking to grab your money at every corner

As much as I see crypto as a good solution the medium doesn’t change the mindset! I still see people going to make the same mistakes with crypto and there needs to be better education about money as a tool and not just money as a means of getting cool shit

Meh, I think the richest people have no money. Why would a rich person want to hold an unlimited fiat that drops in value 15% a year due to inflation. Rich people short cash, hold negative cash, especially in this day and age when they can hold precious bitcoin and metals instead. True rich people hold no money in a perfect world, use credit cards, and pay them off with other credit cards in an endless loop, loans on the fly, and only touch the cash for a millisecond for settling if 100% necessary.. In the future fiat may go extinct, this is a new paradigm.

AS FOR YOUR TOOTH, YOU DON'T HAV TO GO.
All u gotta do is start changing your habits, the cavity will reverse itself. I have this one tooth that the dentist has been trying to root canal for about 10 years now. They trued to send me to the endodontist twice, both times I skipped out. The tooth is all chipped an she said the root is rotting, and the root even did a weird thing and disconnected last time I went in. We'll that was a year ago, since I have been using my water pick, and scraper tool around it and it does not hurt at all. The wants to drill it and fill it with nasty root canal glue so the bacteria gets stuck in there. No way, there is nothing worse than a root canal tooth. After corona I'm going to ask her if she can think of any other solution to get a gold crown on there without me having to drill. Last I told het to yank it if it becomes a problem, u should have seen the look of disgust in her eye! lol

I upvoted you this one time since it is a small upvote, but you make too much on your posts compared to everyone else. Seems like u all got a gang of circle jerks! If this continues u gonna drive people like me out of here.

ON SECOND THOUGHT I TURNED IT TO A DOWNVOTE, YOU ARE OVERPAID!!!

YOU ARE OVERPAID!!!

You're funny. I haven't transferred a single cent of crypto money into my bank account ever.
Think about that for a moment, because in a very real way I get paid $0.
In fact I bring more value into this network than I "get paid" so... irrelevant.

On top of that shit sandwich, banks have been known to purposefully reorganize charges so that someone trying to make sure they don't get overdrafted does anyway.

Santander does this to my dad a lot.... We've even seen payments ordered the right way and then the next day they change order and boom overdraft charge...

Haha, I usually don't mind a if a business tells you up front that they are passing the credit card fee along to you. I know that many of the processing companies have different pricing structures and in many cases smaller businesses just can't cover them. That is cool. I don't like it when they don't tell you and they just jack up the price. Great example. I went to get mulch this morning. The lady at the counter tells me $30. I pull out my credit card, pay, and then head home. It wasn't until later in the day I was looking at the receipt and I realized I had been charged $37. Tax in my state is only 6% so they had to be throwing the CC fee in there as well. No big deal, but it would have been nice to know it up front. I guess I should just always assume it from now on...

It is true what you say...it is easy to make lots of money by taking a little from a lot of people.

The sad part is that a lot of these people who the money gets taken from are totally uninformed. While the big companies are manipulating the situation, I have to say, I wish we could get more people to just pay attention to what is happening. Even if you can't pay for anything else right now...just start paying attention to what is happening...at least that won't cost you any money...lol! Eventually, it can save you a lot of money.

With a little discipline and a little more awareness and knowledge, many people can start breaking the cycle of poverty...

I hope your tooth gets better soon!

This reminds me of one time, when I was poor, I had my Capital One credit card extend me extra credit line while I still had a job. Lost my job and racked that debt up quick. Then, they pulled the rug out from under me and lowered my credit limit to below my balance so that they could nail me with fees and raise my interest rate. I caught them in the act and luckily I was liquid enough to pay the balance down enough to avoid that, but it was in that moment I decided to get out of debt completely and figure out a way to turn the one way sucking sound that is the banking system into a leaf blower that only gives me money. Took me until a couple years ago to complete my plan, but I did achieve it. Now as a private individual they literally pay me to use their services and get nothing from me in return. Crypto is going to grenade their whole business model eventually.

Enjoyed this article.
It’s amazing when you sit down and list the ways you can get buried by the system.
You really need to make a list and avoid each of these traps. Credit is a wonderful tool of capitolism, but it’s a two edge tool. One side helps and the other hurts.
The poor frequently see only the hurting side, but the rich purposely use the helping side.

Always use the right tool, the right way.
Sad and eye opening article, and the comments are full of a universal experience of getting hurt by the bad side.

You struck a nerve for sure. It’s amazing how universal the bad experiences are..,
